Richie's End of Season Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 22nd April

Saturday 22nd April 2017 turned out to be a lovely day for the final games of the rugby season and our Annual Dinner. The 1st Team entertained already promoted Congleton in a real thriller of a game with our visitors winning 43-26 scoring seven tries to four of our own. We had our chances to sneak the game when we had fought back to 26-31 but it was not to be.

Still, well played to all players on both sides and referee, Jim Taggart.

The 2nd Team went to Ellesmere Port with a full squad but went down heavily but played with great spirit and camaraderie.

In the evening we held our Annual Dinner where Mark Palios, TRFC Chairman, was our principal guest and speaker. His speech was excellent and very well received by all present. Mark has since emailed to thank everyone at the Club for a wonderful evening.

Many thanks must go to Chris and Lesley Hall for the wonderful meal and to all the waiting on and bar staff who worked so hard. Much appreciated as always! A great event as ever.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 8th April

TRY FEST AT BALMY CHRISTLETON !!

The question is, was it a balmy or a barmy afternoon at Christleton last Saturday?

In reality the answer is both!

It was a beautiful day for running rugby and that is what we got despite the fact that the pitch was tiny, uneven and had almost a complete lack of pitch markings. So a big well done to referee, John Littleton, and our touch judge, Alan Muir, for successfully contending with these conditions. Every time either side scored the other almost immediately bounced back !! There was not much between the sides in attacking play but their tackling was much stronger than ours. The half time score was 25-24 in Christleton's favour and the final result went their way 53-45.

We scored some scintillating tries through fine running from Andy Smith, Harry Eastwood and Eric Nixon with the ever reliable, Gareth Pryce, often setting them on their way! Liam Evans had a fine game too but my MOM this week is Mike Byrne who carried forward superbly; well played, Mike! Special mentions too to Karl Whelan and Dom Verheijen who both stepped up to the mark in fine style. After a shaky start newcomer, Phil Stubbs, had a good game at full back.

There are no games this Easter weekend with the Club being on tour. Wishing all tourists a wonderful time and come back safe and sound !!

I am sure you will all join me in wishing long time member, Keith Aldcroft, the very best of luck with his impending heart operation at Broadgreen Hospital, where he currently is, probably scheduled for sometime next week.

The last games take place on Saturday 22nd April with the 1sts entertaining Congleton and the 2nds travelling to Ellesmere Port. This will be followed that evening with our Annual Dinner.

Result: Christleton 53 Oxton Parkonians 45

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 1st April

BRAVE EFFORT!!

Click for more picturesIt was yet another Saturday morning when the weather was against us having had heavy overnight rain. A difficult pitch inspection decision was made @10.30am agreeing that the game should go ahead. Fortunately the weather improved dramatically and the pitch somewhat allowing a most entertaining game to take place. Birchfield were much the stronger side in the opening 20/30 minutes but our resolute defence and tackling throughout the team did not allow our opponents to score. Towards the end of the half we came more into the game but there were to be no scores at all before the interval.

With the wind at our backs we started the second period on the offensive and eventually took the lead in the 50th minute through a Jack Fletcher penalty. However, all this did was to kick start Birchfield back into action and 2 minutes later they scored a converted try from a quick tap penalty where we were quite naive thinking that they were going to opt for a kick at goal. Our visitors now played at pace and constantly drove forward at us and scored three further tries with one being converted. We still tackled well but it was not enough. We had a couple of chances but Birchfield also defended well. All our squad had tried their utmost but MOM for me has to be Eric Nixon who carried forward aggressively and was absolutely ferocious in his tackling. In my opinion he saved us from conceding a further two tries.Well played, Eric!!

Mention also to Jonathan Sheridan who has shown great commitment in stepping up to the first team squad gradually improving his game week by week. Well done, Jonathan! Well played Birchfield and I also thought referee, John McDaid, had a fine game.

Result: Oxton Parkonians 3 Birchfield 24.

Scorer: Pen - Jack Fletcher

Team: Jack Fletcher, Jonathan Sheridan, Harry Eastwood, Terry Williams (Captain), Eric Nixon, Ben Sadler, Gareth Pryce, Martyn Sharkey, Matt Dodd, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Justin Danher, Craig Forshaw, Mark Hillan, Liam Evans, Peter Hillan, Ben Pearson, Phil Stubbs, Dom Verheijen, Dave Walker.

Ref: John McDaid (Liverpool).

Prior to the game we held our inaugural Ladies Luncheon for the players wives, partners and girlfriends. It was a great success with many thanks to Danae and Duncan for organising the event and for Chris Hall for the wonderful meal. Also many thanks to the RFU (via Andrew Soutar RDO) for sponsoring the occasion too !

We are indebted to the FT Club for their Match Day sponsorship and to Matthew Burton for selling the raffle tickets; as always it is so much appreciated!

Don't forget it is the Annual Dinner on Saturday 22nd April with tickets priced at £20; guest speaker Mark Palios (TRFC Chairman). See Kenny Owen for your ticket if you haven't already done so. As always it is sure to be a good night !!

This coming Saturday sees the 1sts travelling to Christleton with the 2nds at Widnes.

The following Wednesday 12th April sees the 1sts in further action at home to Liverpool University with a 6.30pm KO.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 11th March

NERVY VICTORY AGAINST OUR CLOSEST RIVALS !!

Click for more picturesThere had been an upturn in both the weather and pitch conditions enabling the game to go ahead without any problems when only two days before it was in severe doubt. As is so often the case in recent seasons this was a Parkonians/Prenton derby which could have gone either way! Prenton started off strongly from the word go and indeed were 7-0 up through a converted try after only 3 minutes. Their lead did not last long though and we soon levelled the score in the 7th minute through a powerful finishing run from Eric Nixon with Jack Fletcher adding the conversion.

Soon after Eric brought off a simply fantastic tackle to prevent a further Prenton touchdown. However, in the 22nd minute our opponents regained the lead with another converted try; they were not to score again. Five minutes before the interval skipper Terry Williams powered over and again Jack added the conversion points. The half time whistle meant that the scores were level at 14-14. Prenton will have been the happier side after the first 40 minutes having had the lion's share of both territory and possession

The second period saw a marked improvement by the Parkonians side but it was still anyone's game. After a period of pressure we took the very sensible option in the 55th minute to take a penalty kick at goal which Jack successfully converted to give us the lead at 17-14 for the first time in the game. Both sides had attacking spells which could have resulted in further scores. Following a couple of Prenton defensive errors, Ben Berkson pounced and picked up the loose ball and drove over wide out for the decisive try in the 70th minute. This try was not converted. However, with just under 10 minutes remaining we held a decisive 8 points lead.

A couple of minutes later we had the chance to go further ahead through a penalty attempt which Jack narrowly missed. Prenton desperately tried to get back into the game but the Parkonians defence held firm. We had won the game which we obviously take great pleasure in but our opponents had pushed us all the way and I am sure they and their supporters felt they deserved more from the game.

Personally I applaud their mighty effort and commitment on the day showing the vast improvement in their game as the season has progressed. A very big well done to all players on both sides and to referee Conal Scholes too. For Parkonians Allan Williams had a very powerful game as did brother Terry and Eric Nixon. However, MOM for me was Ben Berkson for being in the right place at the right time on the day and for big strides in developing his game in recent months; but a very dismal effort with your MOM pint, Ben. Great to see new recruit, Phil Stubbs, making his 1st Team debut too!! Welcome, Phil.

It was fantastic to see such a fabulous turnout of supporters and past players from both clubs enjoying the day before we were to witness a magnificent England victory over Scotland. Many many thanks again to Ben Pearson for selling the raffle (so many) tickets and to Match Day Sponsor, Norman Morris; it is so much appreciated!!

On Saturday we bade farewell to Mike Marnick as he embarks on his travels and new career over the next 15 months. We all wish you the very best of luck, Mike!

This Saturday sees both teams having rearranged league games. The 1st Team travel to Ellesmere Port for a 2.15pm KO with the 2nd Team having a home game versus Anselmians 3rds - KO to be confirmed, so watch this space.

On Sunday the Senior Colts completed their season with a plucky performance against Marple at home. Well done to all of the playing squad and to Ian and Annette Westwater, Martin Varley and Phil Smith for their unstinting commitment and dedication over the past two seasons.

Thanks everyone for your great support last weekend and here's looking to two great Parkonian games this Saturday before England's final Six Nations game in Ireland(5pm KO).

Result: Oxton Parkonians 22 Prenton 14

Scorers: Tries - Eric Nixon, Terry Williams, Ben Berkson. Cons - Jack Fletcher(2). Pen - Jack Fletcher

Team: Craig Whelan, Jonathan Sheridan, Terry Williams(Captain), Jack Fletcher, Eric Nixon, Ben Sadler, Gareth Pryce, Martyn Sharkey, Ben Berkson, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Phil Smith, Kiel Williams, Phil Steven, Allan Williams, Matt Dodd, Mark Hillan, Paul Hillan, Kieran O'Donnell, Phil Stubbs.

HEROIC PERFORMANCE AGAINST TABLE TOPPERS!!

This will be a brief report but this does not mean to take away anything from the heroic performance from the 20 players who were all MOM on the day!!

The weather had been truly awful in the build up to game meaning the game had to be changed to the 3rd team/training pitch which was very heavy. This did not stop a great contest from taking place.

Our opponents Aspull showed why they are unbeaten table toppers scoring six tries two of which were converted. Our defence was fantastic the tackling being ferocious; some of their tries came from well worked overlap situations. We were desperately unlucky not to score on at least a couple of occasions.

Well played to Aspull and well done to referee , Neil Burdekin, who had a good game despite the difficult underground conditions. As previously stated all 20 players were MOM so no special mentions this week. Next week sees the 1sts make the short journey to Ellesmere Port.

Result: Oxton Parkonians 0 Aspull 34

Team: Craig Whelan, Jonathan Sheridan, Terry Williams (Captain), Harry Eastwood, Chris Chapman, Ben Sadler, Gareth Pryce, Martyn Sharkey, Ben Berkson, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Gareth Taylor, Craig Forshaw, Kiel Williams, Allan Williams, Peter Hillan, Mark Hillan, Matt Dodd, Phil Stevens, Tim Hassall.

Ref: Neil Burdekin(Liverpool).

The 2nds had no game but this Saturday entertain Anselmians 3rds. Both games are due to have 3pm KO but watch this space!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 18th February

EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER!!

What a great game and local derby and advert for rugby this was. On the day the teams were exceptionally evenly matched and the contest was fantastically competitive throughout with the result in doubt until the very final whistle!! The action was pulsating from the word go with the first score being a 12th minute penalty to Wallasey. We hit back in the 16th minute with a try wide out from Craig Whelan; in the build up to this try a Wallasey player received a serious leg injury resulting in an ambulance being called on. All at the club wish him a full and speedy recovery.

This resulted in a 40 minute delay before Jack was able to successfully complete the conversion! If anything the game picked up a further pace?! From a quick tap penalty our opponents crossed over in the 22nd minute and again the conversion kick was successful. Wallasey further increased their lead in the 27th minute to 13-7 with another penalty goal. We needed a response and we got one with a fine try and conversion from Jack Fletcher in the 31st minute giving us a narrow 14-13 lead. 38th minute and there was a Wallasey sin binning followed by them kicking another penalty on the cusp of the half time interval.

Half Time:Oxton Parkonians 14 Wallasey 16

The second period was just as frenetic and enthralling as the first 40 minutes had been!!

48 minutes and Wallasey were kicking their 4th penalty goal of the afternoon increasing their ascendency to 19-14. A period of forward pressure from us in clubhouse corner culminated in Terry Williams crashing over wide out in the 60th minute with Jack once again adding the conversion points. 21-19 to the Parks! 'Come On' !!! Not for very long; a second try for Wallasey also converted came in the 63rd minute changing the lead once again in favour of our visitors 26-21. Now things were very nerve wracking indeed. Try as we could we just couldn't get the vital score we required?!

With time running out in the 77th minute Harry Eastwood went in for a great try under the posts with Jack adding the vital 2 points. 28-26 to Parkonians! What a heartbreaker for the Wallasey team and their passionate supporters; but was there to be a final twist to the tale? Almost, with the very last touch of the game Wallasey dropped for goal which would have swung the game in their favour. The kick narrowly missed and the game was ours. What a nailbiter it had really been.

Many many thanks to all of the players on both sides in what had been a real humdinger of an encounter and to referee Brian Harris who played his part also. Thought there were strong games from everyone but mentions this week to Gareth Taylor and Mike Byrne who carried strongly as second rowers. Liam Evans was always in the thick of the action as were captain Terry Williams, Matt Dooley and Harry Eastwood. Two real crunching great tackles late on from Chris Hall when it mattered most; well done, Chris.

MOM for me this week, and he didn't even ask, is Jack Fletcher for a fine game once more and for those so important conversions; well done Jack! In the match there were 10 kicks at goal from either side with a 100% success rate! How often does this happen at our level? It was a really good atmosphere in the clubhouse afterwards ; what the game is surely all about and it was great to talk about old times and concerns for the future with the likes of Billy Hughes, Eddie Rafferty and Tony Render along with others.

Wishing Wallasey all the best for the rest of their 90th season; they played really well for a team who is currently bottom of the league . Hopefully onwards and upwards for Parkonians with a real challenge this coming Saturday at Holm Lane when we entertain league leaders in Aspull.Still a 2.15pm KO. Really need everyone's support for this one! Once again well done to all!

Result:Oxton Parkonians 28 Wallasey 26

Scorers: Tries - Craig Whelan, Jack Fletcher, Terry Williams, Harry Eastwood. Cons - Jack Fletcher(4)

Team: Jack Fletcher, Craig Whelan, Terry Williams (Captain), Harry Eastwood. Eric Nixon, Ben Sadler, Gareth Pryce, Martyn Sharkey, Ben Berkson, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Gareth Taylor, Matt Dooley, Phil Stevens, Liam Evans, Kiel Williams, Peter Hillan, Mark Hillan, Kieran O'Donnell, Chris Hall.

Ref: Brian Harris(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team made the short journey to Port Sunlight, leading at half time 5-0 through a Richie Peters try so he informed me.

However, the second period was a different matter with Sunlight winning 40-10; The returning Tommy Manger scored a consolation try steamrollering over! A good effort again from the lads who never throw in the towel; the 2nds have no game this coming week.

Many thanks to Steve Williams for his match day sponsorship; much appreciated as always and to the ladies for selling the raffle tickets!

Great to see everyone and same again next Saturday!!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 11th February

WHAT A GAME!!

An absolutely fantastic game took place at Holm Lane last Saturday, even if our opponents led by 33-0 in as many minutes. It is tribute to ourselves that we came back so strongly and for the remaining 55 minutes the score was 5-5 all. Although this was a much more disciplined performance we started slowly and were soon 12-0 down. Our opponents, Old Bedians, on what may have been their first ever appearance at the club enjoyed a truly 'golden' first half and according to their players played their best rugby of their season!!. The second half really was an evenly matched hard fought fast and furious contest but the damage had been done!!

However, many positives are to be taken from this game hopefully being carried forward for the remaining 9 league games!

Gareth Taylor, in his new found 2nd row position, was our MOM with many strong carries and good tackles absolutely enjoying every minute of his game. The NMOM in Jack Fletcher, another fab try, and Harry Eastwood both starred and are offically somewhere in the MOM queue behind that most modest of men, Craig Whelan! Matt Dooley was absolutely awesome as always on his return to the fray; hope your shoulder isn't too bad, Matt?!

Special word too to Tim Hassall on his first team debut putting in a sterling stint; well done, Tim, and keep it up!!

Everyone on the Parkonian side had started disappointingly and everyone finished on such a high! We must really start with this same intensity next week at home to Wallasey! Well done to Bedians for playing so well and to referee Billy Coulter who had a very good game and was always up with play.Good to see Captain Terry Williams returning to action after a couple of weeks out through injury. Hoping too that Chris Downey's injury is not too serious, yet another of our promising younger players!

Result: Oxton Parkonians 5 Old Bedians 38

Scorer: Try - Jack Fletcher.

Team: Jack Fletcher, Craig Whelan, Harry Eastwood, Eric Nixon, Jonathan Sheridan, Terry Williams (Captain), Gareth Pryce, Chris Downey, Ben Berkson, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Gareth Taylor, Kiel Williams, Phil Stevens, Liam Evans, Mark Hillan, Peter Hillan, Matt Dooley, Dan Smith, Tim Hassall.

Ref: Billy Coulter(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team travelled to Mossley Hill with just 15 players going down very bravely by a 53-15 margin. Next week they travel to Port Sunlight.

Cracking atmosphere in the Clubhouse watching England edge it against Wales!! Many thanks as always to my good friend, Alan Muir, for his match day sponsorship; it is much appreciated and to Steve Murphy for selling the raffle tickets.

See you all next week.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 4th February

HEARTBREAKER!!

A heartbreaker it certainly was and a most difficult report to write also; so I must try to use my words carefully?! I believe our opponents probably deserved their victory due in no small part to our very poor play in the second quarter of the game! The game became a heated affair with our opponents putting in several cynical challenges as the game wore on, in my opinion, to say the least.

We have incurred more injuries again and I feel that the game was not safely managed. I have to complement our players, all of them, for how we played in the last 35 minutes meaning that the last 5 minutes were very tense but we could not quite turn things around!

The start of the game, a National Junior Vase group decider at that, was not helped by the fact that another game was played on the pitch which only concluded 20 minutes before kick off! The ground conditions as a result were very heavy and uneven to say the least!! Both sides started well and the early exchanges were hard and fair! This was not to continue. However, we opened the scoring in the 7th minute through an excellent Jack Fletcher try which he converted himself.

Hill soon hit back scoring two unconverted tries. In the 24th minute Jack went over for what seemed a certain touchdown but it was disallowed for 'blocking'. A harsh decision but also naivety on our part as well. For the rest of the half we were poor and our self discipline suffered and as a result we gave away penalties and having no luck either. Hill scored two further tries leaving them with a 22-7 interval lead.

We needed to respond and we most certainly did but not before we went further behind at 29-7 in the 45th minute . Then we really started to play scoring three brilliant tries two from Harry Eastwood and one from Dan Sullivan with Andy Smith adding two conversions. 26-29 down with a minimum of 5 minutes remaining but Hill came back hard denying us the opportunity to gain the vital score we required!!

The players had really put their bodies on the line in the second period and once more I commend them all and our coaches Duncan and Danae too. Hard luck as well for our latest additions to the injury list. Wishing both Andy and Ben a speedy recovery.Great to see Dan Smith being in the thick of action once more on his return from injury! Well done, Dan!

The hardest match report for me to write in 9 years of the Round Up.

Next week the 1sts return to league action when we take on Old Bedians at Holm Lane.

The 2nd Team drew against Birkenhead Park 3rds 15-15 in a disappointing game in so many ways - enough said! Next week sees them travel to Mossley Hill 2nds.

It is 9 years since Brian 'Gus' Cusick passed away and we were honoured, as always, to receive generous match day sponsorship from the Bowe, Clarke and Cusick families. Many thanks it is so much appreciated. It was great to see Gus's great friend, Robbie Knight(Club Captain 1973-75) and on such fine form too, at the Club on Saturday to watch the England v France game accompanied by his son, Dave and Aaron Devitt.

Thanks to Matthew Burton for selling the raffle tickets.

Hoping for better things this Saturday!!

Congratulations to the 2nd Team Captain and team in their performance against a strong Wirral team at Holm Lane

Unfortunately the very heavy rain during the night and in the morning made the pitch difficult going despite the Ground Volunteers excellent work during the week.

We were always going to be up against it but the youngsters alongside Ben, Lee, Chris, Dom and Paul gave a good account of ourselves.

In fact after 3 hours at the Bar courtesy of the Sponsor we managed to win the game with the 25 metre sprint and dummy by Ben Pearson being the deciding score.

A very enjoyable day, well played to all.

SUPERB NERVE WRACKING WIN!

This was indeed a fabulous win against very worthy opponents in Christleton who pushed us all the way! It was a cold and dank Holm Lane when kick off time arrived with a rather gluey playing surface also. We got off to the best possible start with two tries coming in the first 10 minutes with first Allan Williams touching down followed by one from Liam Evans a couple of minutes later.

The first try was converted by Jack Fletcher giving us a 12-0 lead; looking like a comfortable victory? This was certainly not to be the case as Christleton came back very strongly indeed applying intense pressure upon the home side. Their first score was a penalty goal in the 15th minute followed up by a converted try in the 23rd minute thereby narrowing our lead to just 12-10 which was to remain the scoreline until the interval. It had been a very tense and exciting first half!!

This tempo and the tightness of the contest was to continue until the final whistle!! Our opponents had a chance to take the lead in the 51st minute but their attempted penalty kick at goal just fell short but they continued to attack with our defence standing resolute throughout. Gradually the tide turned and eventually after a period of sustained pressure Andy Smith went over in clubhouse corner following a serious of drives for the line from the pack. Jack was not able to add the conversion points but our lead of 17-10 was to be the final score despite both sides attacking and looking for further scores.

This had been a great game against a formidable Christleton side. All players on both sides are to be congratulated for their performances in this enthralling encounter. However, there were six yellow cards issued; three on both sides . In the past I would argue none of these would have been a yellow card offence?! There is a real danger, in my opinion, to the game of Rugby Union if this is the way World Rugby want games to be refereed. Yes, we do not want to see head high tackles but surely at times common sense should prevail? I feel sorry for the officials especially at the lower end of the game and it is going to be very 'interesting' to see how this issue 'pans out' in the coming months. Rant over or at least for now?!

I feel some personal mentions are due this week. Liam Evans now established at No 8 continues to play well and is really developing his game. Great to see rugby union 'learners' in Phil Stevens and Chris Chapman really coming on week by week and obviously enjoying the game, team ethos and membership of our great club. Well done Phil and Chris!! A very solid performance from Gareth Taylor making his 2nd row debut; Gareth really seemed to revel in his new found position and surely has a chance to play 1st team rugby regularly? So well done to Gareth too.

Commiserations to Geoff Waters and skipper Terry Williams who received substantial injuries in the course of the game. Geoff has a broken arm and will be out for most of the remaining months of the season whilst Terry is suffering from knee damage; good luck lads in your recovery along with our other injured players. In conclusion a most satisfying Saturday afternoon for our 1st team and coaches, Duncan and Danae, and of course for all supporters. There was a great crowd ; thanks to you all! This takes us up to 4th place and surely we can take this performance on for the rest of the season?!

This coming Saturday sees the 1st team travel to the Isle Of Man to face Ramsey in what is sure to be a stern challenge?! The very best of luck to the travelling playing squad and our coaches.

The 2nd Team returned to action, at last, with an away game against Liverpool Collegiate '4ths' but appear to have been stitched up going down 81-0 when our opponents had neither a 1st or 2nd team game! They did not break the rules, but surely this was not in the spirit of the game! Well done to all players on the day; the Club is especially proud of you all!

This coming Saturday sees the 2nds at home to Wirral 4ths.

This week's match sponsor was birthday boy, Peter Evans, and this coming week sponsoring the 2nds will be OPAL chairman, Dave Westwater. Many thanks gentlemen; as always it is much appreciated.

Congratulations to Liam and Jenna on their engagement and thanks for a brilliant night. See you all very soon but this weekend I am on my annual fact finding mission at my friend's club, Old Yardleians RUFC, near Solihull. Remember we played them on Easter tour 2008...

GREAT WIN; SHARKEY STEALS THE SHOW ?!

Click for more picturesThis ended up being a fabulous victory with us playing some excellent rugby on the day. However, it certainly did not start like this with us having to soak up plenty of Newton pressure in the opening 20 minutes. It is to our credit that we didn't concede. In the 22nd minute, and totally against the run of the play, Jack Fletcher broke out of our own 22 and ran the length of the pitch shrugging off all kinds of attempts to tackle him. He touched down under the posts and converted his own try. 7-0 up! This was not only Jack's best try for the Club so far but surely the Club's try of the season?!

It wasn't long (4 minutes to be exact) before Jack was at it again attacking towards the touchline in clubhouse corner before off loading to the excellent support running of Craig Whelan who crashed over in the corner. 12-0. The last five minutes of the half saw a series of driving mauls from successive line outs leading to two further touchdowns as a result. It was a pleasant change to see different names on the scoresheet with the tries being credited to Mark Barham and Justin Danher; two veterans who both had very good games. Both tries went unconverted to leave the half time score in our favour at 22-0. Newton did not know what had hit them and not surprisingly were quite despondent when the whistle signalled the end of the first period of play!

Only five minutes into the second period and we were at again with a speculative hack through and a rather fortunate bounce of the ball enabling Andy Smith to pick and run in under the posts. Nothing seems to keep this lad off the scoresheet! Jack added the conversion points. 29-0 up and only 45 minutes gone surely nothing could stop us now? We eased off the gas and let Newton apply some pressure for 10/15 minutes resulting in them gaining a couple of touchdowns with one being converted. 29-12.

This rocked us a little and we started again to play as we had done in the second quarter. At this stage I must apologise to Peter Hillan for a mistake I made in my New Year's Eve Round Up in the game against Port Sunlight when I should have credited him with a try instead of Martyn Sharkey whom I accidentally gave Peter's try to. Now onto Sharkey who was about to have a golden 10 minutes of his season so far. Firstly he 'chased back' and made a most classical tackle; then he dived over for a try following another excellent driving maul. He arose waiting to be mobbed by his fellow forwards only to find most of them on the floor having a 'dust up' with our opponents leaving him confused as what to do next!! Hopefully he hasn't used up his tackles and tries for the rest of the year?

Jack added the conversion points. 36-12 with 5 minutes to play and this was the way it was to remain. A very satisfactory performance with everyone playing well .

However, we can still improve upon our concentration and team work then we will really start putting our opponents to the sword. Still very pleasing though and thanks once again for the truly excellent support. Good to see Craig Whelan and Allan Williams back in the thick of the action after spells out!! A word for ref Dave Edmunds who kept the game flowing in a calm manner and obviously enjoyed the match as much as we all did!!

SO DISAPPOINTING!

Parkonians travelled the short distance for their first league game of 2017 on what was a bleak afternoon to face opponents Mossley Hill on their sloping and undulating pitch. This was a game that we could and should have won but in the end didn't deserve to! For the first 15/20 minutes we were poor before springing to life in the second quarter to actually lead 19-12 at the interval! We were 12-0 down before we scored three good tries through Jack Fletcher, Andy Smith and Paul Hillan, two of which were converted by Jack.

We were only four minutes into the second period before Hill leveled the scores through a converted try. Not for long though as Ben Sadler crashed over for a touchdown five minutes later with Jack again adding the conversion points to restore our lead at 26-19 on the 50 minute mark. There then came a period of play where we relaxed in addition to conceding penalties and allowing some of the referee's decisions to get to us! We were not to score again.

Hill hit back with a penalty goal followed by two tries one of which was converted to leave the final and correct scoreline at 34-26 in our opponents favour. We had our good spells and there were also some good individual skills shown but in truth we did not gel as a team for much of the match. No doubt we are aiming for better things in the coming weeks starting this Saturday 14th when we entertain Newton le Willows. Many thanks for all our traveling support; we certainly outdid our opponents in this aspect!!

GREAT EFFORT BUT ULTIMATELY DEFEAT TO SUNLIGHT IN PLATE SEMI!

This was another excellent game of rugby coming only a few days after the Boxing Day thriller. We entertained Port Sunlight in the semi final of the Cheshire Plate and there were a great number of supporters in attendance from both clubs! The ground and weather conditions were both excellent but unfortunately we found ourselves 5-0 down in as many minutes. However, the rest of the half saw a real ding dong battle with the lead changing hands several times leaving Parkonians with a slim 19-15 advantage at the interval.

For much of the second period Sunlight were in the ascendancy both in terms of possession and territory with us competing throughout but at 34-26 down with 10 minutes remaining we just couldn't claw our way back into the game! There had been some scintillating play from both sides and fabulous tries as well. On the day Sunlight deserved their victory and one could tell that they played their rugby at a division higher than us but our display on this showing augurs well for the second half of our season?!

No personal mentions this time except to say very well done to all players on both sides for providing such entertainment! Also very well done to referee Phil Stokes who had a very good game both on and off the field as did his assistants, Gary Williams and Ben Moore. Congratulations, Ben, for getting yourself locked in the changing rooms prior to kick off!! A final word to all supporters of both sides who certainly added to the festive atmosphere.

BROTHERS JUST EDGE IT IN BOXING DAY THRILLER!

It was a beautiful day, apart from a chill northerly wind, for the 37th annual consecutive playing of the Parkonians Brothers v Parkonians Veterans match and what a festive treat it surely was!!

Players turned up on time, 35 in all, teams were selected impartially by yours truly at 1pm and the gamed kicked off promptly at 1.30pm under the jurisdiction of our excellent referee, Gary Williams, with a large crowd already in attendance. The opening quarter was very tight and tense until Paul Hillan opened the scoring crashing over for the Brothers in clubhouse corner in the 20th minute; this try was unconverted. This opened up the game and for the rest of the contest there was plenty of exciting running from both sides.

Andy Smith evened things up for the Veterans touching down in the 24 minute but not for long before the Brothers reclaimed the lead three minutes later through a Harry Eastwood try and then Harry touched down once more just a couple of minutes later; all of these tries went unconverted. On the stroke of half time Andy Smith hit back for the Veterans with Connor Moore adding the conversion points leaving the interval score in the favour of the Brothers with a 15-12 scoreline.

The second period was real end to end stuff with Andy Smith adding another two tries, to his and the Veterans tally, within the first ten minutes of the half; unfortunately both tries went unconverted. So it was now 22-15 to the veterans but not for long! "Mr Everywhere" aka Rob Marnick hit back for the Brothers with an excellent try again unconverted narrowing the Veterans' ascendancy to just two points i.e. 22-20. The next 15 minutes brought a break in the scoring but not in the excitement with both teams threatening to break the deadlock. With under 10 minutes remaining the Veterans attempted to run the ball in their own 22 when surely the correct option was to kick to touch and clear the lines. Sadly, in my opinion of course, this led to a Harry Eastwood Brothers interception try converted by Mark Hillan putting them 27-22 in front. In the remaining 8 minutes the Veterans tried everything to secure the draw or victory but it was not to be and the Brothers had hold of the Beckett / Hillan Shield(s) once more.

All players and spectators had thoroughly enjoyed the match as always but this year it just seemed a little more special. So many played well - obviously Andy Smith (4 tries) for the Veterans and Harry Eastwood (3 tries) for the Brothers stood out. I was very impressed with two young cricketers playing on the wing Dan Berkson and Adam Winstanley along with junior rugby coaches Liam McDonnell and Jodie Kirkham.

These four guys playing along with the impressive Veterans in Tony Owens (oldest player on the park at just 62) and Simon Smithdale coming out of retirement supports our RFU Recruitment and Retention funding for the game via our local RDO, Andrew Soutar. Whilst all the aforementioned  were in contention for The Donny Hawker MOM Memorial award, it goes to a young man making his adult debut, Alex Highton, who played with great skill and bravery (some fantastic tackling) for a 17 year old stepping up from the Senior Colts.

Well done young man and once you have got over your bumps and bruises we will certainly welcome you to adult rugby on a regular basis. Your Dad, Paul 'Sticko' Highton, would have been so proud of you just as your mum, Elaine, and all of your family were on the day!!

Thanks again to referee, Gary Williams, who had an excellent game and certainly enjoyed the after match hospitality!!

Many thanks to all bottle / raffle prize sponsors on the day especially the Bowe / Clarke / Cusick / Hillan families for their generosity and to Matthew Burton and his assistant for selling the raffle tickets - it is all so much appreciated. Our wonderful Boxing Day event whilst being so fantastic is always a very emotional and nostalgic day for so many when we remember our loved ones who have passed on and who used to really enjoy this day; our thoughts, as always, are with them and their families.

Thanks to absolutely everyone for supporting the day in whatever capacity and to Chris and Lesley Hall and all of their bar team for all their hard work throughout the year!

Don't forget that the 1st Team entertain Port Sunlight on Saturday (New Year's Eve) in the Semi Final of the Cheshire Plate - KO 1.15pm (yes 1.15)!! Let's have a big turn out to support the team.

VERY SOLID WIN AT A DARK AND DAMP LINLEY.

This was indeed a very good win against plucky opponents on a dismal day weather wise at Linley. Our hosts were the stronger side in the opening quarter playing through their bulky forwards taking the lead through a penalty goal; we had conceded far too many penalties in the first few minutes. However, the tide turned and we started to play with greater confidence and discipline resulting in three tries before the interval.

The second period saw us remain the dominant side although our opponents did put pressure on us at times. We scored a further two tries thus ensuring the bonus point win. It had been a good all round team performance after a scratchy start with an outstanding performance from our MOM, Liam Evans, who had a fantastic game. Well done, Liam! Andy Smith also had a fine game winning our MOM from Linley! Thought that Jack Fletcher and captain, Terry Williams, played very well too. However, I want to stress again that all twenty squad members played their part and a word to our opponents who competed right up to the final whistle.

Also well done to Danae for her continued enthusiastic coaching even though her paperwork got soaked! Referee Lee Dawson enjoyed himself and had a real feel for the game and players.

We must thank Linley once again for their excellent hospitality. A mention to all our supporters who braved the conditions; Ken Cooke, Pete Evans, Richie Beckett, Chris Beckett, Mike Marnick, Dave Smith, Lee Dreher, Steven Pearson, Jonathan and Ashley Sheridan. The 2nds did not have a game.

TEN TRY TREAT AGAINST THE PLUCKY AMBLESIDERS !!

Click for more picturesWe entertained our visitors from the Lake District, Ambleside, in our first pool game in the National Junior Vase in what turned out to be a most entertaining game on a pleasant early winter's afternoon! Although we were largely in charge scoring twelve tries, Ambleside just never gave up scoring three tries of their own including the last one of the game!

There were some strong individual Parkonian performances with our MOM being flanker Phil Stevens on his full 1st Team debut having a splendid game. Well done, Phil! Jack Fletcher once again shone scoring three tries and two conversions! Our powerful pacy centres Andy Smith and Harry Eastwood each scored two tries with Matt Dodd powering over for a great try too!! He likes his mentions does Doddy!!

Special mention to Jonathan Sheridan who scored a touchdown also on his full 1st Team debut after having survived an attack from the actual corner flag at the other end of the pitch!!! Veteran second rowers Phil Smith and Justin Danher were solid throughout with Liam Evans well to the fore too gaining  our MOM from our visitors! A big thank you to our referee on the day, Gary Williams, who enjoyed himself and had a good game too!

Click for more picturesThere was a smashing atmosphere at the Club before, during and after the game. Prior to kick off we had our Annual Players Reunion lunch which was very successful and well attended. The Ambleside 'party' stayed for a good couple of hours afterwards enjoying themselves immensely before setting off on the long coach journey north. Well done to all - you did your Club proud!

HEARTBREAKER IN THE MIST AND COLD AT BIRCHFIELD!!

This game was just too close to call, very feisty and tense throughout. As a contest it was very competitive and could have gone either way with Parkonians never seeming to have 'the rub of the green' or 'the luck of the bounce' either. We didn't start well making errors and gifting them their opening try. The first half ended early after 32 minutes with Ryan Evans suffering a concerning injury which required the paramedics to attend. Hopefully Ryan's injury is not too serious and all at the Club wish him a full and speedy recovery. The half time score was 11-0 in Birchfield's favour.

The referee had said he would endeavour to add this eight minutes on in the second period if the light held but we only played 41 minutes and I thought we could have played the extra 7 minutes as it was a cloudless sky! However, I am not saying for one minute that we would have gone on to win if these extra minutes had been played, indeed, we might have lost by more! It is just that in my opinion there was no good reason for not continuing.

We certainly played much better in the second half with some real passion at times causing our hosts to give away a succession of penalties with two of their players ending up in the sin bin. Andy Smith coolly slotted over four penalties but in the end it just wasn't to be. Many thanks to both Duncan and Yannis for stepping up to the mark and for playing with such desire.Well done to all players on the day and many thanks to replacements Phil Stephens and Jonathan Sheridan who didn't get on; it is much appreciated, We seem to be having no luck with the number of injuries and unavailabilities but players have to commit and do their utmost to attend training! Also thanks to the small band of travelling supporters on the day!!

2nd Team Report from Paul Lennon

After a late pitch inspection the game was on and we faced a thrown together but feisty Helsby team.  Having lost Josh Bowe to work commitments just before the game, and then Captain Paul Lennon to injury just 5 minutes in, we had to really shuffle things about with a back line including prop Dan Sullivan in the centres, back row Lee Dreher on the wing and Bar Manager Chris Hall at 10!

The reshuffle didn't hamper our progress, though, as Justin Danher crashed over for the first score. Helsby equalised through a try and conversion from their impressive young 10. Everything Helsby done well went through him and with a back line lacking their usual pace we had to work hard to stifle him. Kieran O'Donnell ran in an excellent try to make it 14-7 at half time.

In the 2nd half Ste Pearson switched sides and set out to prove a point, crashing over 2 tries, and very nearly a 3rd he helped widen the gap.  Another from a confident Kieran O'Donnell put it to rest and only a sympathetic late con solation from Helsby blemished and excellent 2nd half.

Dan Sullivan ran hard all day and really caused problems and Ste Bordley bullied every one in a black and green shirt, but it was another confident and authoritative performance from every one of the 2s. However thrown together we end up on a Saturday, we're now consistently stepping up and getting some very good results.

LOCAL DERBY WIN - JUST ABOUT!!

The 1st Team made the very short journey across Woodchurch Road to face local rivals Prenton on a blustery but mild mid-November afternoon. What ensued was a very close, tense and mistaken ridden contest which I think we just about deserved to edge?! Not sure the Prenton players and members will agree though!

We got off to a very poor start with Prenton dominating both possession and territory without being able to capitalise on it. Indeed, it was Parkonians who opened the scoring through an Andy Smith penalty with Prenton levelling the scores at 3-3 each with a penalty off their own shortly afterwards. Gradually we came into the match with Jack Fletcher scoring a fine unconverted try wide out on the right following what turned out to be the best passing movement of the match. However, a series of mistakes let in our hosts to score a converted try shortly before the interval to leave the half time score narrowly in their favour at 10-8. Quite rightly our coach, Duncan Meehan, had strong words with the team at the break!

Parkonians were the better side in the second period, exerting strong pressure on their opponents for much of the half without really dominating though and there was some excellent Prenton defending too. However, we were able to score two further unconverted tries, through Mark Hillan and Jack Fletcher once again, to take the score to 18-10. With just over 5 minutes remaining, careless mistakes let in Prenton for a further unconverted try leaving us with just a 3 point lead. We were able to play down time to secure victory.

A disjointed affair but a win is a win especially over our closest rivals. Certainly not really a convincing team performance but there were strong individual efforts from our joint MOM ,in my opinion, our oldest and youngest players; Pete Hillan and Connor Moore respectively! Jack Fletcher shone once again with Jamie Lamb and Mark Barham playing well. It was good to see the returning Harry Eastwood and Rob Marnick both in the thick of the action.

Massive game for the 1sts this Saturday when we entertain unbeaten league leaders Aspull (Wigan) at Holm Lane in  our first meeting for many a year. Let's continue with the excellent support for the team even though it was a little frustrating for the watchers last week.

The 2nds entertained a depleted Wallasey 2nds side at Holm Lane running out  29-15 winners. Many thanks to those who turned out for Wallasey. This week they travel to play Liverpool Collegiate 4ths at Aigburth(Liverpool CC). Remember both games have a 2.15pm KO.

EXCITING WIN AGAINST THE PORT!

Click for more picturesThe Parkonians 1st Team hosted Ellesmere Port on a pleasant but cold afternoon in the first of the winter 2.15pm KO's which is now the case until the end of February.

It turned out to be an enthralling and exciting contest throughout the eighty minutes. We played against the strong northerly wind in the first half but this didn't appear to affect the balance of play. We started well and scored two lovely tries through the pacy and ever threatening Andy Smith. Andy converted both of his own tries and one would have thought that at this stage we were set up for a comfortable victory but we eased off the gas and Port gradually gained in confidence playing through their forwards with a series of driving mauls culminating in them scoring two tries one of which was converted leaving the score at the interval narrowly in our favour at 14-12.

Port had been giving away penalties at regular intervals and Andy Smith was able to convert one of these shortly after the restart but once more our visitors hit back with an unconverted try levelling the scores at 17-17. We then upped our game scoring tries through Ryan Evans, Dan Sullivan/Mike Byrne from a driving maul and another one for Andy Smith following some more powerful running. Andy was able to convert two of these touchdowns to take us into a 36-17 lead with at least 15 minutes remaining, However, it was Port who finished the stronger and it was only extremely resolute defending which kept them out!!

A very pleasing team performance and maybe we should have scored more points but that is down to our concentration, decision making and personal fitness. It is now obvious that we are beginning to realise that it is a 20 man squad game and that the interchanges and timing of them is now vital to the game. Yes, Andy Smith was MOM(26 points) with a splendid attacking performance but in a totally different way the ever improving Kiel Williams had a wonderful game. Good to see Jamie Lamb back in the squad and well done to Connor Moore and Chris Chapman on their 1st team debuts- keep it up! Well done to the whole squad and the coaches.

I am informed by a most reliable source, that in my absence,  Jack Fletcher was our MOM scoring three tries in the very tense 20-18 victory at Wallasey the previous week!! Well done, Jack, and thanks again for the info!

Duncan commented to me that our travelling support played a decisive role in getting behind the team at Wallasey and could I ask for the same kind of support at Prenton this coming Saturday where league placings count for nothing on the day. So get up to Prenton Dell for a 2.15pm KO and get right behind the lads; it can make such a difference especially when we play away. Finally I thought referee Billy Coulter had a good game in a most undemonstrative way and kept the game flowing

Result: Oxton Parkonians 36 Ellesmere Port 17

The 2nd Team travelled the short distance to Anselmians 3rds where they went down by a 38-17 margin. Captain Paul Lennon sent me the following report.

Despite losing four key players from last weekend's victory against Port Sunlight before selection and a further four by the Saturday meet time , we still went off to Annies with a strong 16 man squad. This is a great testament to the strength in depth of the squad this season. We started off right on the front foot taking the lead through a Josh Bowe unconverted try. Sam Moss then went close before a spate of injuries saw Karl Whelan and Paul Lennon standing in as hooker. Only when down to 13 did we concede and despite being overrun out wide, always at least a man down, we tackled hard and scored two tries through the ever impressive Rob Marnick. It was a proud and resistant performance with their skipper commending us at the end saying we gave them a tougher game than Wirral had done the week before!!

Very well done to Paul and all of his team and great to see Rob back in action! This week sees the 2nds entertain Wallasey 2nds at the club. Many thanks to Kenny Owen for his match day sponsorship and to young Matthew Burton for selling the raffle tickets and to Alan Morris(Snr) for co-ordinating the raffle. A great after match atmosphere in the club last Saturday let's keep it going and continue to support the teams if you are not a player!!

STORMING WIN v IOM VISITORS

In my absence the 1st Team enjoyed a storming 10 try win at home to Ramsey(IOM) being 29-0 up at half time and going on to win handsomely 63-12.  There were five tries for the returning Andy Smith and three for Ben Sadler. Congratulations to our coaches and all the squad.

There is no game at the club this Saturday 15th October as the 1sts have a free date. Meanwhile the 2nds travel to previously unknown opponents in Old Bedians(Didsbury) for a NWIL 2nd round Plate cup tie. We wish them well!!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 1st October

STRANGE GAME; FAIR RESULT

The 1st Team travelled along the M62 in awful weather to face opponents in Newton le Willows to find a pleasant autumn afternoon without any rain thankfully! It was indeed a strange game in which either side could have won but perhaps neither deserved too?! Both teams looked dangerous in attack but struggled with ball retention/ quality final passing. In reality we did well to come back from 12-0 and later 17-5. There were tries from Ryan Evans(2) and Ben Berkson.

There were some good individual performances especially from Matt Dooley (MOM) and the evergreen Geoff Waters; both playing with exceptional determination and bravery. We are not helped currently by several players out being injured or unavailable. It was a little disappointing that we could not field five replacements given that the 2nds had a free date! If we had had a full squad, who knows, it could have made the vital difference?!

This Saturday sees a stern home encounter against Ramsey(IOM) which is always keenly contested.

PLEASE NOTE THE EARLIER KO OF 2.15PM. This is due to their return flight time.

The 2nds have an away league game at Wirral 4ths with a 3pm KO.

Result:Newton le Willows 17 Oxton Parkonians 17.

Scorers: Tries - Ryan Evans(2), Ben Berkson. Con - Ben Sadler.

Team: Jack Fletcher, Geoff Waters, Terry Williams (Captain), Eric Nixon, Gareth Pryce, Ben Sadler, Mark Hillan, Dan Sullivan, Matt Dodd, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Ryan Evans, Kiel Williams, Matt Dooley, Liam Evans, Ben Pearson, Ben Berkson, Craig Whelan.

Rugby Trophies at Holm Lane

RFU coaches held a session at the Club at the end of September with boys from Pensby and Woodchurch schools.

The coaches brought with them the RBS six nations cup and the Triple Crown shield, after the coaching session the boys were able to see and be photographed with the trophies.

The Chairman, Dave Westwater, of course took the opportunity to be a 'star' for the day!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 24th September

HARD EARNED VICTORY IN A TENSE EXCITING CONTEST

Click for more picturesWe entertained Mossley Hill at Holm Lane in what turned out to be a scintillating and nail biting triumph always in doubt until the final whistle! Indeed, Hill started and finished the stronger; but that is not to take away the fact that we were the better side on the day and played some really good rugby surely giving us a platform on which we can build as the season progresses. It is already evident all the hard work that our coaches, Duncan and Danae are putting in!!

After a scratchy first 15 minutes we began to dominate and carried well in the forwards at close quarters playing close to the touchline as well as producing some very effective driving mauls. This culminated in fine tries by skipper Terry Williams and the ever impressive Jack Fletcher(not quite MOM this week Jack) with Jack adding a wonderful conversion from wide out. However, our visitors scored two unconverted tries of their own leaving the score in our favour at 12-10 at the half time interval. We were able to continue strongly in the third period of play adding a further try through Craig Whelan (hair stayed in place throughout, Craig) with Ben Sadler adding the conversion and later a penalty leaving us looking reasonably comfortable or so it looked at 22-10?! However, Hill were not finished and began to apply some forward pressure with them adding another unconverted try leaving a very tense last 5 minutes to play out which we managed to great relief from all players, coaches and supporters!! Mention to young ref, Philip Nam, who I thought had a good game keeping up with play well.

A very good team performance with literally all 19 squad members playing their part so no MOM this week! So yes plenty to build on as we prepare for this Saturday's league game away to Newton le Willows. I have been impressed by our new recruit prop forward , Dan Sullivan(an ex Pensby boy of course). Allan Williams had a very good game on his return to 1st team rugby after nearly a year away. Thought that Mike Byrne,Martyn Sharkey and Liam Evans had good games with Kiel Williams coming on at flanker and doing a good job. Finally an apology to Matt Dodd who scored his first try for the 1st team against Linley two weeks ago which I incorrectly credited to Matt Dooley who did indeed score himself but only once! Sorry about that Doddy!

The 2nd Team had a tough away day against an impressive Birkenhead Park 3rd Team who contained a fair number of fleet of foot Liverpool JMU students!! The 2's went down 62-21 but there were two tries for prop Chris Downey and the Skipper, Paul Lennon reports that the team spirit was awesome as always! The team do not have a game this coming Saturday.

On Sunday our U16 and U18 Teams went down bravely to Northwich and LSH respectively but all players put in a good stint and enjoyed themselves so well done again to all players and their coaches. Many thanks to our match day sponsors, Eric Potter and Owen Butler; much appreciated as always!

SUPER SATURDAY INDEED!!

After a disappointing 33-5 defeat the previous Saturday, the 1st XV bounced back in fine style with a 12 try rout of Linley at Holm Lane.

The play was scintillating at times and one hopes this is a forerunner of things to come. If the players turn up to training regularly then the coaching will pay off, along with making themselves regularly available. Three tries from the evergreen veteran Mark Hillan makes him the MOM just ahead of another three try hero in Jack Fletcher. Good to see a reborn Brian Harris as referee after his recent knee op. This week sees the 1sts travel to Liverpool University in what is often a free flowing entertaining game.

Result: Oxton Parkonians 78 Linley 12

Team:Jack Fletcher, Ryan Evans, Andy Smith, Terry Williams(Captain), Kiel Williams, Gareth Pryce, Mark Hillan, Martyn Sharkey, Peter Hillan, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Dan Smith, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Liam Evans, Dan Sullivan, Richie Peters, Matt Dodd, Eric Nixon, Ben Berkson

Scorers: Tries - Mark Hillan(3), Jack Fletcher(3), Andy Smith(2), Matt Dooley, Liam Evans, Matt Dooley, Terry Williams. Cons- Andy Smith(9).

Ref:Brian Harris(Liverpool)

The 2nd Team had lost narrowly the previous week 3-0 to Ellesmere Port in a most enjoyable encounter.

This week they travelled to our local rivals Prenton and recorded an excellent 22-14 victory. Tries were scored by Phil Stevens, Craig Whelan and Josh Bowe with James McGrath adding two conversions and a penalty. This week the 2nds entertain Sefton in what is a double header counting as both a League and a Cup game.

Many congratulations too to both our Cricket 1st and 2nd Teams who will end their seasons this coming Saturday as champions of their respective divisions!!

So yes it was a Super Saturday in every possible way!
