Rugby News

Review of the Season ~ 2015-16

This has been a mixed season for the Club but ending on a real high for the 1st Team who ended their league programme in the Merseyside(West) division with a 'Super Seven' consecutive wins on the bounce!

The squad has demonstrated a real team spirit, really excelling themselves in recent weeks! They have produced some scintillating and truly awesome rugby in the second half of the season. So the 1st Team ended with winning 11 of their 22 league games, drawing 1 game and losing the remaining 10. Hopefully we finish in 4th place behind 3rd placed Oldershaw who we defeated 50-22 in the final game at Holm Lane, in what was the best display of the season. I say hopefully 4th, as some clubs may or may not complete their league programme!

I am delighted that we have honoured all our league games in what has been a most fragmented season for both of our teams due to certain factors; the RFU structured, or is it non structured, season; the exceptionally wet winter and the concession of several games by our opponents! It is too early to say with any amount of likelihood as to what division we might be placed in next season?! I would like to place on record my thanks to Club/1st Team Captain, Terry Williams and his Vice Captain, Liam Evans for all their hard work and commitment to the Club. I am delighted that Terry is to stand again next season.

The 2nd Team have had a most mixed season suffering some heavy defeats but also producing some marvellous victories in NWIL Division 5 (West). We only conceded one league to the very strong Crosby St Marys 1st Team. The squad played with enthusiasm and bravery at all times always appearing to enjoy themselves!

My thanks go to the outgoing 2nd Team Captain, Richie Peters, and to his 'deputies' Ian Westwater and Paul Lennon. I am very pleased that Paul is to stand as our 2nd Team Captain next season. The 2nds are likely to play in the same division next season.

For the first time in several years we were able to field an Under 17 Team in The Raging Bull Junior Colts League D and ended the season winning the Annual Fair Play Award for all clubs in the four divisions; some achievement!!

The lads suffered some very heavy defeats but never threw in the towel and completed their season. They are a great bunch and we hope to see many of them playing adult rugby in the very near future - indeed a couple have already done so. Congratulations to all players then along with their parents and all volunteers.

My profound thanks on behalf ot the Club go to the coaches and organisers; Ian and Annette Westwater, Martin Varley and Phil Smith. We almost certainly won't have enough players for an Under 17 team next season but we would hope to rejoin the leagues the year after.

We enjoyed a fantastic evening on Saturday 23rd April at our Annual Dinner / Presentation of Awards; a separate report is available on this to view on the website. I was absolutely delighted to welcome our good friend, Paul Warrington(Cheshire RFU President) as principal guest and speaker. He seemed to thoroughly enjoy his evening as did our guests from other local clubs. Our thanks must go, once more, to Chris and Lesley Hall for a wonderful meal. In addition many thanks to all bar and waiting on staff that evening. Several guests commented on the fact that ours is one of the best dinner evenings around! Long may it continue!!

As Rugby Club Chairman I would like to thank all members of my committee for their unstinting loyalty to both the Club and myself and for their sterling efforts throughout the year. A special mention for Ken Owen who is standing down after many years on the Committee including 4 years as Chairman prior to myself taking over in 2010. I am looking forward to welcoming Lee Morris who will take over Ken's role as RFU Player Registration Officer . Pleased to report that Ken will continue as dinner ticket organiser! I would also especially like to thank our Association Chairman, Dave Westwater, and all his ground team for all their hard work throughout the year in maintaining our grounds and surrounds!! People always comment about the magnificence of our grounds and facilities. We would be lost without this group of volunteers.

In conclusion the 2015-16 has been a most enjoyable season which has presented several challenges. We have been fortunate to recruit several talented young players along with returnees and players stepping up from the youth section. We MUST retain them and always strive to attract both young and experienced players to our Club!! We should aim as a 1st Team especially to play at the highest level we can; I believe this is the only way we can secure our future existence as a Rugby Club.

Well done again to all we should feel proud and here's to next season.

Yours In Sport.
Richie Beckett.Chairman/President.Oxton Parkonians RUFC.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 23rd April

SIMPLY SCINTILLATING SUPER SEVENTH WIN ON THE BOUNCE TO END THE SEASON!!

This was an absolutely awesome display of powerful and speedy rugby to round off our 1st Team season with a super seventh win on the bounce!!

Oldershaw were 3rd in the table and even after this game remain so. Therefore, they are more than a decent rugby outfit who had already defeated us twice this season. Even they were taken aback by the sheer tenacity of our team. However, we started slowly and at one stage were 12-5 down but we had golden spells of play either side of the interval and in the final minutes of the game also! We had played into a very stiff breeze in the first period and it was to our great credit that we went into half time leading 22-15.

The sheer pace and power of our attacking running was a joy to behold but there was also some stout defending too and there needed to be at times!! I had our Player Of The Year, Danny Blyth, down as MOM but only just as absolutely each one of the eighteen man squad listed below were absolutely magnificent! Eric Nixon scored a hat trick of tries showing great power, pace and determination. As so often in the second half of the season, after his return from injury, Andy Smith demonstrated his speedy elusive running and grabbed a brace of tries.

Further tries were scored by Terry Williams, Liam Evans and one from Gareth Pryce who picked up a wayward pass brilliantly to dive over. So we had scored eight tries converting five of them! Young Player Of The Year, Dan Smith, played his best game of the season with some powerful and direct carries! What a great prospect this young man is as is Jack Fletcher who has enoyed a most successful debut season with us! Jack and Harry Eastwood exuded both pace and power in attack whilst as ever Players Player Of The Year, Matt Dooley, was everywhere in both attack and defence showing why he is so well respected by his team mates!!

Both Oldershaw and ourselves have now completed their/our league programmes; indeed the first two clubs in the division to do so. 'Shaw will definitely end in 3rd place and hopefully we will end up in 4th place. This will be an excellent outcome considering the reservations we had about being competitive in this tough Merseyside(West) Division. We can hold our heads high as both players and members; we should all be very proud of the great Club we belong to!

Finally well done to all players on both sides and to young referee, Philip Nam. Let's take all this further forward next season.

Result:Oxton Parkonians 50 Oldershaw 22.

Scorers: Tries- Eric Nixon(3), Andy Smith(2), Terry Williams, Liam Evans, Gareth Pryce. Cons - Jack Fletcher(3), Eric Nixon(2)

The 2nd Team did not have a game but all being well will entertain Ellesmere Port this Saturday 30th April in their final league game. Come along and support the lads who have played so bravely and enthusiastically throughout the season.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 16th April

SUPER SIX!!!!

Yes, it was 'Super Six Saturday' for the 1st Team with yet another great win away at Newton le Willows. Our 6th victory on the bounce leaving us with just one league game to play this coming Saturday 23rd April at home to third placed Oldershaw whom we would dearly love to beat!!

It wasn't all easy going at Newton. We took the lead through an unconverted Jack Fletcher try but our hosts hit back before the interval leaving the half time score at 5-5. We then had a poor 10 minutes conceding a converted try to leave us trailing 5-12. Jack Fletcher, who was having a very good game, replied with a touch down which he converted himself to leave the scores even steven. Gradually we gained the ascendency scoring two further unconverted tries through Andy Smith and captain Terry Williams meaning the final result was a bonus point four try triumph!

Another brilliant win with many people agreeing that the feisty strong tackling ever reliable Matt Dooley was our MOM! Jack Fletcher who scored two tries and who is enjoying an excellent debut season with us ran him a close second. Well done again to all eighteen players on the day.

Let's finish the season with a bang on Saturday at home to Oldershaw.

Result: Newton le Willows 12 Oxton Parkonians 22

Scorers:Tries - Jack Fletcher(2), Andy Smith, Terry Williams. Con-Jack Fletcher.

Team: Jack Fletcher, Harry Eastwood, Geoff Waters, Andy Smith, Kiel Williams, Terry Williams(Captain), Gareth Pryce, Jamie Lamb, Matt Dodd, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Richie Peters, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Liam Evans, Martyn Sharkey, Dan Smith, Paul Hillan.

Ref: Paul Houston(Manchester).

The 2nd Team travelled to Crosby St Marys which was always going to be a tough task and we went down 53-0. However, once more we didn't concede against top of the table opposition and we had a full team too!! So well done to Paul Lennon and his men!! Myself and the club are very proud of you.

The 2nds do not have a fixture this Saturday. Let's look forward to our Annual Dinner after the 1sts game at Holm Lane against local rivals Oldershaw.

Sure to be an enjoyable evening and one of celebration and success also. Make sure you are there!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 9th April

BREATHTAKING GAME!!!

Click for more picturesA truly remarkable victory for the Parkonians 1st Team took place at a very damp Holm Lane on Saturday 9th April 2016!!

The weather was miserable but the rugby certainly wasn't. This was a fiercely contested game with Mossley Hill proving to be most worthy opponents in an encounter which was very even for the most part and could have gone either way. At times the pace of play was frenetic with much tough tackling on display as well.

In the end the home side deserved to edge it due in no small part to their strong and at times heroic defence especially in the last quarter to ensure we held on to our 12-0 lead. This week there are to be no named individual Parkonian players in this report because all 18 players were heroes in quite simply our best performance of the season and our 5th consecutive league win on the bounce. Once again well played Mossley Hill and well done to young exchange Northumberland Society referee, Callum Watson; like players he made some mistakes but at the age of 21 could go far in his refereeing career. Now let's go and finish the season in style with our last two league games being Newton le Willows away this Saturday 16th April and at home to Oldershaw on Annual Dinner Day, Saturday 23rd April.

Result: Oxton Parkonians 12 Mossley Hill 0

Scorers: Tries - Andy Smith(2) Con - Eric Nixon.

Team:Eric Nixon, Kiel Williams, Geoff Waters, Andy Smith, Kieran O'Donnell, Terry Williams(Captain), Gareth Pryce, Jamie Lamb, Matt Dodd, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Dan Smith, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Liam Evans, Martyn Sharkey, Peter Hillan, Harry Eastwood.

Ref: Callum Watson (Northumberland).

Paul Lennon took his 2nd Team to local rivals Wirral and indeed we lost heavily 72-7. This does not tell the story however! Paul worked hard all week to get a full team together and he achieved this with help from our cricketers, friends and guests! Once more we performed heroically and bravely. We didn't concede and we mustn't!!

Sadly some local clubs are really struggling to survive and put out teams on a regular basis. I sense an upturn in our playing ability and remain most positive about our future! Well done to all players in both teams last Saturday indeed to all our members and supporters too! A great atmosphere once again, in our fantastic modern clubhouse, after the game.

This Saturday sees the 2nds having to rise to another tough challenge in playing Crosby St Marys away. This game will be played at Waterloo RUFC. Good luck to both teams.

Many thanks to last Saturday's match sponsor, Alan Muir. Much appreciated as always, Alan, and also a big thank you for all your hard work on the pitch prior to kick off. In addition thanks to Matthew for selling the raffle tickets. Great to see Andy Evans and family up for the weekend as well!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 2nd April

SUPER SEVEN TRY ROMP AT LIVERPOOL UNI !!

Fortunately there was to be no tour hangover and a most entertaining free running game was on display at the Wyncote Sports Ground.

We were most impressive for much of the game with two short spells of mediocrity where we lacked self discipline. We started well with Gareth Pryce, who had a fine game, making an excellent line break passing to the impressive Andy Smith who sprinted to touch down under the posts with Eric Nixon converting as he did for four further tries. We dominated the scrummage and a few minutes later we scored a pushover try with No 8 and stand in skipper, Liam Evans, touching down. So we were 14-0 up with only just over a quarter of the game gone. Then we stepped off the gas becoming casual and giving away silly penalties. The students came back in to the game as a result and only trailed 11-14 at the interval.

The second period saw us play some scintillating rugby and we won the half 31-5 with a further five tries added three of which were converted. There was a first 1st Team try for Kiel Williams amongst them. I thought Liam Evans, Andy Smith and Gareth Pryce had especially strong games. In addition replacements Dan Smith and Kiel Williams played well but I must emphasize that once more this was a real team effort with powerful running and tackling by the backs and great scrummaging and driving mauling from the forwards.

In reality perhaps the winning margin should have been greater but that is down to us making less mistakes and giving away fewer penalties. Of course our thoughts were with our Club Captain, Terry Williams, and Martyn Sharkey throughout the day. Liverpool Uni were competitive throughout as always. So well done to them as well as us and also to referee, Mike Shearman, who had a good game.

This Saturday 9th sees us entertain Mossley Hill (3:00pm) in what should be a good contest.

Result: Liverpool University 16 Oxton Parkonians 45

Scorers: Tries-Andy Smith(3) ,Liam Evans(2), Kiel Williams, Danny Blyth. Cons-Eric Nixon (5).

Team: Jack Fletcher, Geoff Waters, Andy Smith, Eric Nixon, Harry Eastwood, Gareth Pryce, Mark Hillan, Jamie Lamb, Matt Dodd, Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Richie Peters, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Liam Evans(Captain), Dan Smith, Paul Hillan, Kiel Williams

Ref: Mike Shearman (Liverpool).

The 2nd Team were without a league game once more but entertained a very strong Birkenhead Park side at Holm Lane. Whilst going down by a large margin it was reported to me by several ex playing members that there was a great spirit within the side and that they played with both bravery and determination throughout. Well done to Paul Lennon and his squad.

This Saturday 9th sees the 2nds make the short journey to play Wirral 4ths in a league game.

Many thanks for match day sponsorship from Glen Pearson. Much appreciated Glen and thanks to young Max for selling the raffle tickets. If you haven't already make sure you claim your dinner tickets from Ken Owen on Saturday. Please keep Terry and Allan Williams, Martyn Sharkey and Mark and Glen Pearson in your thoughts in what is a very difficult time for them and their families.

Yours In Sport.
Richie Beckett. Chairman/President. Oxton Parkonians RUFC.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 19th March

DOUBLE HEADER AGAINST THE PORT ENDS IN TWO FABULOUS VICTORIES!!

Click for more picturesIn ever improving ground and weather conditions a most entertaining contest was played out at Holm Lane with both the game and the scoreline swaying one way and the other throughout the 80 minutes!! We started the stronger looking dangerous out wide and we soon opened the scoring through an unconverted try by the impressive Harry Eastwood. A penalty was soon added by Captain Terry Williams, giving us an 8-0 lead with only 15 minutes played .

However, as the first half progressed so did Port's dominance increase and they were rewarded with a converted try five minutes before the interval meaning the score at the break was 8-7 in our favour.

Our visitors continued to be the dominant side in the third quarter scoring a further two converted tries to take them ahead by a 21-8 margin with 25 minutes still to play. We hit back with another Harry Eastwood try which Terry could not convert. However, we then appeared to be fading and Port scored yet another converted try giving them a seemingly impregnable lead of 28-13. Then came surely the most sensational turnaround in our Club's recent playing history?!

Click for more picturesWe scored two unconverted tries through Andy Smith and Jack Fletcher meaning that we now were only trailing 23-28.A period of forward dominance then followed from ourselves with a succession of driving mauls from lines out culminating, 4 minutes from time, in an extremely powerful crashing drive over the line wide out with Richie Peters claiming the touch down.

Scores level at 28-28 with Terry's conversion attempt to come. His kicking form had not been great but he made no mistake with this one. 30-28 ahead with an anxious 3/4 minutes remaining. We ran down time which seemed to last forever before Doddy kicked into touch to bring the relief and joy of the final whistle!!

A fabulous game, a great comeback and a famous victory. Well played to our opponents Ellesmere Port who had played very well for so much of the game and must have wondered how they managed to lose this one! A real team effort by all eighteen Parkonian players!

However, some mentions. I gave Jack Fletcher our MOM in what was his best game since joining the club in the Autumn. Very solid under the high ball throughout and a real turn of pace to score his try; well done, Jack!! Harry Eastwood had a great game as did those back row warriors Matt Dooley and Danny Blyth. Gareth Pryce had his best game since returning from injury making some really telling breaks. Andy Smith as so often looked threatening with ball in hand and praise too for skipper Terry Williams and Richie Peters.

A truly thrilling afternoon of Parkonian rugby!! Well done again to all players on both sides and a word too for referee, Stuart Davidson, who did a good job in what was a difficult game to control at times.

Things were not looking good for the 2nd Team who at one stage only had 11 definite players but up stepped Cricket Chairman, Stew McEwen, and Greg Lindop and they then persuaded Dean Dunwoody to play taking our numbers to 14 when we arrived at the Port.

What unfolded was truly amazing; an incredible 48-30 victory with Greg Lindop scoring three tries, five conversions and one penalty; 28 points in all!! He was obviously our 2s MOM and beat Jack Fletcher in the 'drink off' back at the Club. Many many congratulations to Captain, Paul Lennon. and his team. What a fantastic atmosphere at the Club and the major added extra factor an England Grand Slam after 13 years!! Many thanks to our match day sponsors the FT Club and to young Max for selling the raffle tickets.

No rugby at the Club this Easter Saturday but the Clubhouse will be open at the normal hours for social refreshment. Wishing all tourists an enjoyable and successful time; make sure you return safe and sound?! The 1sts play away at Liverpool University on Saturday 2nd April(3pm KO) whilst at this stage the 2nds have no game.

May I wish you and your families a very happy Easter.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 12th March

TWO GREAT WINS; SAME SCORE!!

Yes, two great wins of 29-18 - one by Oxton Parkonians v Newton le Willows on Saturday and the other by Scotland v France on Sunday!!

This was the third time lucky in attempting to play our league game v Newton ending in a closely fought Parkonians victory. The weather and pitch was much improved thanks to Dave Westwater and his ground team . We had hoped for a 2pm KO but Newton weren't able to make it until 3. They were fiery opposition as always but eventually we ended as victors by a 4 tries to 2 margin! Newton were always in the game, though, and indeed finished the game strongly.

For Parkonians Matt Dooley as is often the case was awesome putting in some ferocious tackles with Danny Blyth also having an excellent game scoring two tries. Andy Smith and Eric Nixon were also very prominent in attacking situations. All in all a good win without being totally convincing. A stern test awaits the 1sts this Saturday when we entertain third placed Ellesmere Port in what is a winnable game if we play with full commitment!

Disappointingly once again there was no game for the 2nds as Collegiate conceded to us. We hope for better this Saturday when the 2s travel to Ellesmere Port.

Many thanks to Ben Pearson for running a very successful raffle; very much appreciated!! Great atmosphere in the Club too watching England putting one over the old enemy even if it was a nerve wracking ending! See you all this Saturday. Remember it is 3pm KO's for the remainder of the season!

GLORIOUSLY MUDDY WIN!!

On an absolutely foul day and on a just about playable pitch a highly entertaining game took place at Holm Lane.

Although we were the stronger side our opponents Birchfield played pluckily and were in it until the last quarter. Birchfield started the stronger, with the elements at their backs, and the score remained 0-0 for almost the first half hour before we gained two excellent unconverted tries through the impressive Jamie Lamb and Danny Blyth; so 10-0 up at half time.

We scored a powerful try through Captain Terry Williams again unconverted. Then Birchfield  enjoyed a purple patch ending in them scoring a converted try leaving us 15-7 to the good but needing further scores to ensure the victory. Two tries duly came through our speedy winger, Harry Eastwood, one of which was a penalty try which Eric Nixon converted. Well done to all players on both sides for playing so well in such adverse conditions. For us I thought Jamie Lamb, Danny Blyth, Andy Smith (great try saving tackle), Liam Evans and Eric Nixon had particularly strong games though I must stress once more that this was a real team effort.

Young referee, Mike Walsh, had a strong, non-fussy performance especially in the demanding circumstances. Well done!! Also special mentions to Geoff Waters for bravely playing in such terrible weather after being quite ill in the previous week and to Peter Hillan for stepping in as replacement at the last minute and playing a vital 25 minute spell!!

The 2nd Team made the short journey to Prenton 3rds and had a great game going down narrowly by a 14-5 margin.

Unfortunately there are no scheduled games for this coming Saturday but we will be seeking an 'A' team game from the pool. The Club will be open as always and there will be 6 Nations games on with England v Ireland at 4.50pm.

Many thanks to our latest match day sponsor,Glen Pearson; much appreciated as always! Thanks to everyone for their support last week and for the good post match atmosphere in the Clubhouse.

ENTERTAINING GAME AND FABULOUS WIN FOR SUPER SECONDS VERSUS LOCAL RIVALS!!

On a much better day weather wise and despite very heavy underground conditions we were able to entertain and defeat our local rivals Wallasey! As a Club we were determined to get this game on especially as the 1sts had no game due to the concession, sadly, of St Edwards Old Boys and the fact that we had had no games the previous Saturday!

This game was hugely entertaining and our opponents Wallasey were a very good side and always in the game. We scored four tries two of them from the ever impressive Geoff Waters plus singles from Karl Whelan and Paul Lennon; three conversions were added by Mark Hillan. For me I was impressed by prop Chris Downey and flanker Rob Rawson and despite his lack of fitness Justin Danher played well especially in setting up Paul Lennon for his try.

Well done to all players on both sides in what was a most competitive match and to referee John Littleton who officiated well  despite his critics of those 'experts' up on the bank?! Well done to Richie P and all of his squad.

Result: Oxton Parkonians 2nds 26 Wallasey 2nds 10.

Scorers: Tries - Geoff Waters(2), Paul Lennon, Karl Whelan. Cons-Mark Hillan(3)

Next week our 2nds take the short journey across Woodchurch Road to play Prenton 3rds. Meanwhile the 1sts entertain Birchfield at Holm Lane. Both KO at 2.15pm. Many thanks to our match day sponsors this week the Bowe/Clarke/Cusick family. Much appreciated as always and once again thanks to young Max for selling the raffle tickets!!

Next Saturday evening sees a Captains' Night at the Club from 7pm onwards; it is £3 per head and we are fortunate enough to have local legendary singer Neil Griffiths to entertain us! Let's have your support for the game as always and this event too; food is provided also!!

BRAVE EFFORT BUT SAME AGAIN SADLY!!

Click for more picturesThis will be a brief report!! Unfortunately for the second week running we conceded 50 points without scoring ourselves. Southport are a very good side but not quite as awesome as Ruskin Park. They scored four tries in each half, on a cold and blustery afternoon, converting five of them.

Yet we were often in the game especially in the forwards where our pack played well in driving mauls and at 'pick and go' from ruck situations; we were desperately unlucky not to score! All eighteen players performed admirably and this week I am not going to single anyone outI Ref Jim Bennett had a good game too keeping calm control in the difficult conditions.

Next Saturday 6th February sees the 1st entertain Newton le Willows at Holm Lane(2.15pm) in a rearranged league game from before Christmas. This of course will be followed by England's opening game against Scotland in the 6 Nations(4.50pm).

Result: Oxton Parkonians 0 Southport 50

Team: Harry Eastwood, Kieran O'Donnell, Geoff Waters, Eric Nixon, Kiel Williams, Jack Fletcher, Mark Hillan, Martyn Sharkey, Mark Barham, Jamie Lamb, Mike Byrne, Richie Peters, Liam Evans, Danny Blyth, Terry Williams (Captain), Matt Dodd, James McGrath, Dan Smith.

Ref:Jim Bennett(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team traveled to Anselmians with a much changed side and went down 35-10. Many thanks to Justin Danher and Tim Hassall for running the team. The 2nds do not have a scheduled game next week!

And finally, a big welcome to new playing members Jamie Wescott and Phil Stevens!!

BRAVE EFFORT AGAINST AWESOME RUSKIN

The First Team traveled to unbeaten league leaders Ruskin Park (St Helens) and whilst performing bravely were completely outplayed!! Territory and possession were close to evens but our opponents capitalised on most of our mistakes however small.

In all they scored nine tries (four in the first half and five in the second) converting seven of them!. Ruskin are to be congratulated on a magnificent display and will surely go on to win the division?! For Parkonians I thought all sixteen players showed great spirit and courage! We wish Rob Marnick a good recovery from injury but he must rest out for several weeks !

Well done to ref John McDaid who had a fine game being in complete control both firmly and fairly ! Many thanks to our traveling supporters.

Next week sees the 1sts entertain second placed Southport at Holm Lane.

Result: Ruskin Park 59 Oxton Parkonians 0

Team: Andy Smith, Kieran O'Donnell, Geoff Waters, Eric Nixon, Kiel Williams,Terry Williams (Captain), Mark Hillan, Martyn Sharkey, Mark Barham, Jamie Lamb, Richie Peters, Mike Byrne, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Rob Marnick, Matt Dodd.

The 2nd Team also played with great spirit and bravery at Holm Lane but went down 5-51 to New Brighton 3rds. This week sees them travel to Anselmians 3rds hoping for a change in fortune!

TOUGH, TENSE, TIGHT LOCAL DERBY IN MUDBATH CONDITIONS AT HOLM LANE!!

Click for more picturesWhat a game this was, with only one point in it, on a just about playable pitch at Holm Lane?! All players on both sides played their 'guts out' and were barely recognisable at the conclusion of this compelling match! For Parkonians it was an encounter of 'what if's' whilst for Prenton it was a sense of relief and cause for celebration with their youthful squad gaining their first meaningful victory of the league season.

The home side started much the stronger scoring an excellent try within the first 5 minutes through an excellent break by Rob Marnick who put in Eric Nixon with a brilliantly timed pass. Unfortunately Andy Smith could not convert. The game evened up after our strong opening 15 minutes which coincided with the prominent and forceful figure of Rob Marnick having to leave the field, permanently, at the request of the referee through injury!! Prenton hit back with a penalty goal. Soon after James McGrath was able to squeeze in at the corner for an unconverted try. Prenton gradually applied pressure and we gave away penalties two of which were kicked leaving the half time score 10-9 in Parkonians favour!! Prenton were well back in this game.

The second period brought some fierce and compelling passages of play and the result was always going to be in doubt until the final whistle! Parkonians probably had the better chances but made more handling errors and tactical mistakes than their visitors! Or was it maybe that Prenton wanted it just that little bit more? Parkonians scored after sustained forward pressure with Mark Hillan diving in for an excellent touchdown in Clubhouse corner. Unfortunately once again we failed to kick the conversion points!

Prenton bounced back into the game and took advantage of home side errors to score a converted try giving them a 16-15 lead with over 10 minutes remaining. Parkonians pushed hard for the winning score but were foiled both by their own handling mistakes and excellent Prenton defending! There was to be no change to the scoreline leaving their players and supporters in elation. Although Parkonians had the better chances and were often the stronger side a failure to kick their goals combined with handling and tactical errors meant that on the day our visitors deserved their success. Thought that Rob Marnick (till he had to leave the action), Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Jamie Lamb, Eric Nixon and Andy Smith had strong games. It was very hard for the backs to shine in such difficult conditions.

This Saturday 23rd January sees the 1st team travel to St Helens to play league leaders Ruskin Park in a massive game!! To this effect all players/supporters will meet @12/12.15pm in order that we all leave at the same time.

Result:Oxton Parkonians 15 Prenton 16

Scorers:Tries - Eric Nixon, James McGrath, Mark Hillan.

Click for more picturesThe 2nd Team league game at Sefton 3rds was switched to Holm Lane at short notice and they put in a pulsating performance going down narrowly by a 17-10 margin. Well done to Captain Richie Peters for his excellent organisation of the team and ensuring that the fixture went ahead; also to his squad for their dogged and determined team effort and spirit on the day! Let it continue!!

The 2nds have a home league fixture this Saturday against New Brighton 3rds. Reminder that KO's remain at 2.15pm until the end of February.

Many thanks to Pete Evans for his match day sponsorship. Much appreciated as always Pete and thanks too to young Max for selling the raffle tickets. It was a good old fashoned rugby day at the club last Saturday with great support and good to see the Prenton 'oldies' as well! So well done everyone and see you next week maybe with better weather?!

PULSATING NARROW VICTORY AT A GLOOMY SUNLIGHT!!

Another league victory against local opposition in Port Sunlight . This was a very tense affair right up until the very final whistle with Sunlight pressing very hard for the required vital touchdown. The first 20 minutes were very quiet indeed with us having the territorial advantage but not really looking very threatening; on the other hand Sunlight when they were able to break away looked rather dangerous and they gained a 3-0 penalty goal advantage . In the last 10/15 minutes of the opening period we gained real passion and pressed hard resulting in a fine Andy Smith try which he excellently converted himself giving us a 7-3 half time lead.

The second half was most entertaining, end to end, nerve wracking stuff with no further scores being added by either side! Sunlight pushed so hard for the winning score but without joy as the Parkonian team's defence held up superbly well.

Once again this had been a real 18 man sguad effort; not going to highlight individuals but great to see Mike Byrne returning to action for the first time this season after a lengthy lay off through injury.Welcome back, Mike! Also most pleasing to record that there were no 'cry offs' this week!!

Well done to visiting exchange referee from Manchester, David Knowles, who had a particularly strong game keeping a very firm grasp on the proceedings!! A brilliant result and now looking forward to hosting our local rivals, Prenton, from the other side of Woodchurch Road this coming Saturday (2.15pm KO); a strong vocal support required!

The 2nd Team were without a game but resume league action this Saturday 16th January with an away game at Sefton 3rds, so let's make sure of good availability and no cry offs for the second week running!!

We lost former player Sid Colvin(obituary already on the website) in the week leading up to Christmas.

Sadly I have to report of the passing on of another former player Greg Knight on his 57th birthday, Sunday 10th January. Greg had been ill for some time but it is still very sad for one so young. Greg was a very good 2nd Team player and featured strongly as a centre in the years I was 2nds Captain (83-86, 87-88). He scored many fine tries along with his fellow co-centres of the time including Mark Hillan, Glen Pearson and Georgie Pollock.

Also on Sunday 10th a real veteran life member, John Cowan, sadly passed away. John was not a player but a great supporter of the Club. Dad to Norma, Steve (player '71- '83) and Shirley and Grandad to Andrew and Helen.

Our condolences to both families at this sad time.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Boxing Day 2015

BRILLIANT GAME AND FESTIVE DAY AT THE CLUB!!!

Once again we were able to celebrate our great Club with a magnicently closely fought game followed by a wonderful afternoon and evening! It was the 36th Annual Brothers v Veterans game for the Beckett Hillan Shield ending in a narrow 17-10 victory to the Brothers in which many onlookers claimed was one of the best contests for many a year!!

Many thanks to our referees on the day Dave Grundy,Ben Rees and Mike Heyward for doing such a splendid job in very heavy conditions! Do hope you are feeling better now, Dave, and once again thank you for your loyalty to and support for the Club! Also many thanks to all our bottle sponsors on the day and to young Mathew Burton for selling the raffle tickets!! An excellent effort, Mathew.

Many, many thanks to Chris Hall and all his bar staff both on the day and throughout the year!! It is so much appreciated.

The game was exciting and the result in doubt until the final whistle?! I was delighted that over forty players donned their kit and took part, even if for some it was only for a few minutes! What was equally impressive was that everyone turned up so promptly enabling the game to kick off exactly at the scheduled KO time of 1.30pm.

The oldest player on the day was 61 and the youngest 17! Danny Blyth was the recipient of The Donny Hawker MOM Memorial Award presented by Donny's son, Mike, and daughter, Sarah!

Also impressed by young guests Joe Loftus and Jack Eastwood; hopefully you might both consider joining the Club. Also strong games from Andy Smith and Chris Downey and good to see our Sunday Cricket Captain, Adam Winstanley, making his rugby debut too! Boxing Day for Parkonians is both a day of celebration and one of remembrance as well.

We remember as always H. Martin Curphey(our founder), Ronnie Caton, Donny, Gus, Teddy Chamberlain, C.K. Wilson and Harold Beckett; they all loved this day and the Club. Of course we remember everyone who has passed on and sadly this year particularly Frank Pryce, Paul 'Sticko' Highton (taken so early) and only a few days ago Sid Colvin. To celebrate their lives we sang 'We Sailed To The Isle Of Man'!!! A great rendition which may well become an annual event?!

A truly inspiring day; well done to everyone!! May I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year and as always look forward to meeting you all as soon as is possible in 2016.

'BUZZING' VICTORY AT THE CLUB IN FILTHY CONDITIONS!!

This was a fabulous win over local rivals, Wallasey, in ever worsening conditions as the wind increased and the rain became heavier! Indeed I am led to believe this was the first victory over our opponents in 8 years. Although a very narrow victory it was a richly deserved one yet it could have been snatched from us in the final minute if it were not for some excellent defending.

Wallasey had the conditions at their backs in the first half and after a quiet start they became the dominant  force scoring two unconverted tries before Danny Blyth scored an excellent try in return. Wallasey added another touchdown just before the break giving them a 15-5 lead at the interval. However, we had performed admirably playing against the prevailing conditions.

Gradually the roles reversed and it was Parks applying the pressure. Andy Smith, who looked dangerous throughout, scored a very good try but was unable to convert it. It was now all the home side pressing and after three consecutive scrums taken against the head by the impressive Peter Hillan we were finally rewarded with a try through the forwards with skipper, Terry Williams, gaining the vital touchdown; 15-15!!

Andy Smith now kicked the crucial conversion to give us the lead for the first time with an agonising 5 minutes remaining. Wallasey were not finished and desperately tried to gain the winning points but to no avail. Should they have tried to kick one of their penalties? Probably! It was not to be their day in the closest of contests. Congratulations to all players on both sides for producing such a wonderful spectacle lightening up a miserable afternoon weather wise. Well done too to referee Conal Scholes who had a very good game keeping a firm grip on things!! Maybe joining the short list for a future Boxing Day appointment?! He obviously thoroughly enjoyed himself!

This had been a real team effort but well done to all three HIllans together again once more and their extended family Karl Whelan, Kieran O'Donnell and Mark Barham!! Very impressed with young Kieran and the bravery of James McGrath at full back. Good to see second half replacement Lee Morris having a strong influence on affairs! However, everyone in the team listed below is deserving of a mention! Hopefully, this puts us in good stead for the forthcoming challenging January league programme.

On a personal note it is fantastic to note that there were six ex Pensby lads in the seventeen man squad. Your old school must have taught you something?! Hoping Geoff Waters who had tackled so well recovers quickly from his injury.

It is very good to record that the 2nd Team had 17 players to travel to Port Sunlight after all the hard work from skipper, Richie Peters, in the preceding week.

Although they lost 45-0 it was a very honourable effort against a side including many first teamers due to Sunlight's postponed first team game at Oldershaw. Well done to all!!

Good to see so many 'oldies' at the club on Saturday  and many thanks to Paul Corvers for his most generous match day sponsorship; it is so much appreciated. Thanks too to young Max for selling the raffle tickets.

ROUND UP RETURNS TO REPORT ON RESOUNDING VICTORY AGAINST THE STUDENTS!!

On a cold and blustery late November afternoon Parkonians returned to winning ways with a really pleasing and entertaining performance against the students of Liverpool University gaining four tries thus ensuring the 5 point victory!!

The game started rather slowly with Parks having to do a lot of defending against a very stiff wind! Gradually we worked our way into the game with some very strong scrummaging eventually leading from a pushover try from skipper Terry Williams. The returning Rob Marnick had a fantastic game and was surely our MOM scoring a very powerful touchdown to give us a 10-0 lead at the interval.

The second period showed us gaining in ascendancy scoring two more good tries through the impressive Danny Blyth and Mark Hillan on his 48th birthday. Indeed, Mark is claiming to be the only Parkonian to score on his birthday at such a veteran age?!! The Uni lads tried hard throughout and gained a consolation try which they deserved!

Ref Damian McDonald had a good game too. It was good to see Craig Whelan return to the team and have such a good match too; twin brother Karl impressed as well. The whole front row of Martyn Sharkey, Mark Barham and Jamie Lamb played and scrummaged powerfully . All said and done a very satisfactory afternoon for the 1st Team whose next game is on Saturday 5th December away at Mossley Hill. Next week is a free date again!

Result:: Oxton Parkonians 22 Liverpool University 5.

Scorers: Tries-Terry Williams,Rob Marnick,Danny Blyth,Mark Hillan. Con-Andy Smith.

Richie Peters' 2nd Team battled bravely away at Liverpool Collegiate with a seriously depleted squad. They went down by the narrow margin of 20-15; a really good effort lads! Next week they are away to Wallasey.

Many thanks to Ava for selling the raffle tickets; much appreciated!

SECOND BEST ON THE DAY IN PLATE SEMI FINAL.

Parkonians entertained arch rivals of recent seasons in Oldershaw at Holm Lane in the Semi Final of the Cheshire Plate and once more came off second best. 'Shaw deserved this victory as in all honesty for large periods of the match they dominated both territory and possession. We scored first, though, through Andy Smith who once again demonstrated his electrifying turn of pace; his try being converted by Ben Sadler. As so often in the recent past this stirred our local rivals into action and they scored four first half tries two of which were converted. In reply we scored a second try by Ben Sadler which he converted himself to leave us 14-24 down at the interval.

We restricted 'Shaw to just three penalty goals in the second half. However, this was down to some heroic defending. When the game was gone we did score a late consolation try through replacement prop Martyn Sharkey. I do feel that if we could have raised ourselves as we did against Ruskin Park and Southport then the scoreline would have been a lot closer. Good to see newly registered young members James McGrath and Jack Fletcher having good games and enjoying themselves both on and off the field. Welcome to the club lads! It was good to welcome referee, Malcolm Irving, to the club once more. Thought he had a good game in an encounter which was not always easy to officiate. Well done to all players for an entertaining and feisty contest. The other Plate Semi Final saw Ellesmere Port defeat Helsby 34-0.

MIXED PERFORMANCE AT BIRCHFIELD!!

The 1st Team travelled to Birchfield (Widnes) on Saturday last with high hopes of victory. However, we started so slowly and possibly under rated the opposition too!! We found ourselves 27-3 down at the end of the first period requiring a gigantic wake up call at half time.

To be fair that is what we got with a so much better second half performance similar to the way we played against Ruskin Park and Southport. There was some great driving play from the forwards with Terry Williams, Jamie Lamb, Danny Blyth and Paul Hillan especially to the fore. Andy Smith looked sharp on his return to action looking like he was denied a perfectly good try! In reality we had left ourselves too much to do; we certainly had Birchfield rattled in the last 15 minutes and indeed they ended the game with 13 men on the park as two of their players were sent to the sin bin.

There were good strong tries from Terry Williams, Geoff Waters and Paul Hillan with young James McGrath on the wing taking his try really well!! If we believe in ourselves and respect each other a little more there is no reason why we shouldn't increasingly become a force within this division.

Result:Birchfield 39 Oxton Parkonians 23.

On Sunday the U17 Team entertained league leaders, Bolton, and although they went down 51-0 they performed most admirably with some superb and brave tackling.

This was followed by a most successful fund raising afternoon for the team.

This coming Saturday 31st October sees the 1st Team in Cheshire Plate Semi Final action at Holm Lane with a 1pm KO followed, of course, by the Rugby World Cup Final between New Zealand and Australia at 4pm. Let's have a good attendance and an enjoyable afternoon!!

The 2nds have no game whilst on Sunday the U17's travel to Eccles with a 12.30pm KO.

VERY BRAVE AND SPIRITED PERFORMANCES THESE PAST TWO WEEKS!!

The 1st Team performances against both Ruskin Park the week before last (62-0 loss) and at Southport last Saturday (53-7 loss) has really brought out the best in the players. Both games have been very physical and all squad players have really put themselves on the line. Jamie Lamb and young Dan Smith continue to improve week by week. Mark Barham had a particularly strong game at Southport whilst captain Terry Williams, Matt Dooley and Danny Blyth have been outstanding throughout the season so far. Ruskin and Southport will be the strongest sides in the division this season so the results will surely come?! There are many excellent photographs and a pretty fair match report of the Southport game on their website. This week sees the 1sts entertain St Edwards OB.

Result: Southport 53 Oxton Parkonians 7

Scorers:Try-Terry Williams. Con-Ben Sadler

Team:James McGrath, Karl Whelan, Eric Nixon, Matt Dooley, Kiel Williams, Ben Sadler, Mark Hillan, Martyn Sharkey, Matt Dodd, Mark Barham, Jamie Lamb, Liam Evans, Dan Smith, Danny Blyth, Terry Williams, Peter Hillan, Gareth Pryce, Josh Bowe.

Ref:Billy Coulter(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team bounced right back after a heavy defeat at New Brighton, claiming a well deserved 21-14 victory, at Holm Lane, against local rivals Anselmians 3rds. Some brilliant photographs too on our Facebook site. The game included a 'virginal' try for the youthful Johnathan Sheridan who duly bought his jug!

This weeks sees the 2nds journey to Crosby St Marys 1sts (based at The Hightown Club) for a 1st round Raging Bull Plate game.

A special mention to the U15 team this week who although losing at Caldy against a very strong side performed admirably in a most entertaining game. So well done to all players and coaches, Mark Hillan and Mark Barham.

ADVANCE NOTICE: Please try and support the U17 afternoon on Sunday 25th October when they entertain Bolton U17's with a 12.30pm KO followed by a social with food for all and a RWC Semi Final KO 4pm. We ask for a £5 adult contribution on the day towards the U17 transport fund. Many thanks in anticipation.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 26th September

STALEMATE AT THE DELL!!!

Click for more picturesThe local derby at The Dell versus arch rivals, in Prenton, brought a lovely warm and sunny early Autumn afternoon! The spectators from both sides witnessed a very entertaining, if not always so skilful skilful, encounter. It was end to end stuff with the result in doubt right until the final whistle. Prenton enjoyed the much greater share of both territory and possession but it was the Parks who looked the more dangerous with ball in hand. In truth neither side did enough to claim the game so a draw was a fair result. Both teams scored four tries apiece.

I thought Danny Blyth was our MOM with skipper, Terry Williams, close behind him. Young Dan Smith again had a powerful game this time at blindside flanker. Thought Allan Williams and Jamie Lamb also played well although in reality the whole squad played their hearts out!!. After the game myself and Alan Morris Jnr once again enjoyed the most generous Prenton hospitality. Many thanks as usual gents11 Next up are high riding Ruskin Park whom we host this Saturday at Holm Lane KO 3pm. We really do need a greater commitment by players to make themselves more regularly available and to communicate this to the captains. We need you all especially with some really tough challenges ahead.

Result:Prenton 24 Oxton Parkonians 24

Scorers:Tries-Terry Williams(2),Allan Williams,Danny Blyth. Cons-Terry Williams(2)

Team:Harry Eastwood, Karl Whelan, Liam Evans, Geoff Waters, Eric Nixon, Terry Williams(Captain), Mark Hillan, Jamie Lamb, Matt Dodd, Mark Barham, Richie Peters, Jordan Langton, Dan Smith, Danny Blyth, Allan Williams, Gareth Pryce, Ian Westwater.

Ref:Martin Calcutt(Liverpool)

The 2nd Team suffered a very heavy defeat at home to a very good Sefton 3rd team. We went down by an 84-0 margin due in no small part to our limited availability and three cry offs on the morning of the game; we hope for better things this week when they travel to New Brighton 3rds.

I am sure I don't need to mention England's must win game against Australia this Saturday KO 8pm. Watch it at the club; there was a cracking atmosphere last Saturday despite the narrow defeat at the hands of the Welsh.

UNDER 17's V KNUTSFORD

On a glorious Sunday afternoon at Holm Lane we entertained the highly skilled Knutsford team. Although we lost 5-48 it was a magnicent effort by all fifteen of our lads. They have made such a rapid improvement in just one month winning two of their four league games so far.

This Sunday sees them travel to Didsbury Toc H. Well done to all players and coaches!! We are still on the look out for more U17(YEAR 12) players as we are indeed looking to welcome new adult players whatever your ability. We have had good support for these games so please keep coming along!!

FANTASTIC FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON!!

Click for more picturesAfter two defeats away to local rivals Oldershaw and Wallasey it was great to kick start our 1st Team season with a fabulous victory over another local club in Port Sunlight. It was a real thriller with the result in doubt until the very final whistle. Sunlight had come with high expectations by their own admission and indeed in the first 15 minutes they were the stronger side. However, for the remainder of the first half it was Parkonians playing the attacking rugby. Three excellent tries were scored through Danny Blyth and Matt Dooley(2). All three touchdowns were converted by Ben Sadler.  So at half time we held a 21-0 lead which no one surely could have predicted?!

Sunlight most certainly hit back in the second half scoring three tries one of which was converted leaving the score in our favour at 21-17 with 15 minutes remaining. Heroic defending by the Parks secured a well earned victory in the tightest of games. Congratulations to all players on both sides and referee Brian Harris for providing such a thrilling spectacle!! Our back row of Matt Dooley,Danny Blyth and skipper Terry Williams was outstanding along with Liam Evans who also had a fine game. I thought young Dan Smith in the second row had a most promising game for a teenager in that position! Well done to all in the Parkonians squad which puts us in good heart for the most local of all derbies away to Prenton next Saturday 26th in what will be a keenly contested encounter as always. Let's have a good travelling support up at Prenton Dell.

Result:Oxton Parkonians 21 Port Sunlight 17

Scorers:Tries-Matt Dooley(2), Danny Blyth. Cons-Ben Sadler(3)

Team:Ben Sadler, Karl Whelan, Harry Eastwood, Geoff Waters, Eric Nixon, John Turaga, Mark Hillan, Martyn Sharkey, Mark Barham, Jamie Lamb, Liam Evans, Dan Smith, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Terry Williams, Barry Owens, James McGrath, Jamie Forshaw, Terry Georgeson.

Ref:Brian Harris(Liverpool)

Unfortunately for the second time already this season the 2nds were without a game due to West Park(St Helens) conceding. Next week the 2's are at home to New Brighton 3rds and hopefully this game will go ahead. Many thanks to Steve Williams for his match day sponsorship, much appreciated as always, and to members most generous contributions to the Under 17's team transport fund; a collection which will hopefully occur regularly throughout the season. Thanks everyone and make sure you keep coming to the Club on a regular basis.

Don't forget it is England v Wales next Saturday 26th with an 8pm KO; well done to Japan fabulous match and great result!!

Welcome to the New Rugby Season!

Richie BeckettYes, the 2015-16 is upon us and starts for the 1st Team with a Cheshire Plate Quarter Final tie at home to Congleton on Saturday 29th August with a 3pm KO.

The following Saturday 5th September sees the start of the league season for both 1st and 2nd Teams . The 1sts will now play in a highly competitive Merseyside (West) Division whilst the 2nds retain their place in NWIL Division 5(West). The opening fixtures sees the 1sts make the short journey to Oldershaw for a local derby! The 2nds entertain old friends Ormskirk 4ths. Both games have a 3pm KO.

We have new captains this season! Club and 1st team Captain is Terry Williams and returning to 2nd Team Captaincy is Richie Peters. As players you can really support your captains by attending training on a Wednesday evening and making yourself regularly available to play!! As former players we need to give the teams our most enthusiastic support on Saturdays and offering to help out too!!

Sunday 6th September sees our Under 17 Team play their opening fixture in The Northern Raging Bull Junior Colts League D. The game is at home to Aldwinians having a 12.30 KO. All most fervent support very welcome!!

Here's looking forward to a most enjoyable and successful club season at all levels along with a brilliant Rugby World Cup competition; keep your eyes and ears open for events happening at the Club.

Hope to see you all very soon!
