Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 19th April 2014

DISAPPOINTING RESULT BUT FABULOUS DAY FOR THE CLUB!!

Click for more picturesTwo coachloads of players and spectators traveled up to Winnington Park in keen anticipation for the Cheshire Plate Final against Southern Nomads(IOM). The Winnington ground and facilities and hospitality were excellent in every possible way. A great choice of venue in mid Cheshire so many thanks to the club and Cheshire RFU for their organisation on the day.

The two sides were very evenly matched although I felt Nomads mostly just had that slight edge over us. True, that they also had the rub of the green, the bounce of the ball and some crucial decisions went their way too. However, not to take anything away from Nomads who were a young and fully committed team so well done to them!

I also thought our whole squad on the day was magnificent and I am going to break with tradition and not single out individual players who had outstanding games. They will know who they are and hopefully I told them personally! We took the lead through an unconverted Paul Hillan try, coming up to the half hour mark, but carelessly allowed Nomads to score a converted try very soon after. From then on it was 'nip and tuck' throughout.

A report like this cannot do the game and the whole day justice. We were simply magnificent off the field taking over the whole Winnington upstairs bar and having a good old fashioned sing song before heading for home. Simply a magnificent thank you to everyone who was there on the day including club members who had travelled under their own steam.

The Club wishes Matt Dooley a most successful recovery from the nasty shoulder injury he incurred in the first half; he will require surgery and is having an assessment this coming Thursday 24th April; good luck, Matt, and what fabulous season richly deserving the Club Player Of The Year Award.

A special mention too for our excellent 'Water Boy' on the day in Matt Dodd (Ministry of Silly Runs)!!

Many thanks to our Captains, Andy Smith and Matt Dodd and our coaches Danny Hughes and Gareth Pryce for all their hard work throughout the season; it is much appreciated. Finally I would again like to thank all members of the Rugby Committee for their continued support of both myself and the club! A massive thank you.

So it is farewell to the 2013-14 season; it has certainly had its ups and downs!! Must not forget to thank our ever patient R&J Travel drivers on the day, Mike and John; well done gents.

The Brian 'Gus' Cusick Award (for The Most Improved Player Of The Year):  Paul Lennon. Richly deserved by Paul who has come to the game rather later than most steadily developing year on year. I know how deeply honoured Paul is to receive this award so well done indeed!

A touch judge like myself!Alan has enjoyed working on the grounds and can be relied upon to carry out pre match pitch inspections. An inspiration to us all! Exceptionally well done, Alan.

ENTERTAINING FINAL LEAGUE GAME AT HOLM LANE!

Knutsford were our opponents for the final 1st Team league game of the season and although second best on the day they certainly offered us a stern contest!

Click for more picturesPlayers to shine for us were Mark Barham, who was outstanding on the day and a player who is the backbone of the Club, never missing a training session and always very passionate. Eric Nixon and Matt Dooley, our newly crowned player of the year, were strong and brave as always. Good to see Rob Marnick playing a full part as it was good to see Craig Hawthorne back on the field of play returning from injury. Young Ben Sadler also had a very good game.

Ryans Evans finally used his sat nav and found the Club once more!! Captain Andy had a strong game from full back running hard with the ball in hand as always.

Thanks very much too to ref, Martin Calcutt, for officiating and obviously enjoying himself. A thoroughly entertaining afternoon.

The 2nd Team with only a 'bare fifteen' battled bravely against New Brighton 3rds going down 45-7. Captain Doddy has really done wonderfully well once more this past season with often very limited resources. A great bunch of lads who really enjoy their rugby.

This brings us to the last Saturday of the official season with our Cheshire Plate Cup Final v Southern Nomads(IOM) at Winnington Park RUFC, Northwich with a 12.15pm KO. The two buses are fully booked with the meet for everyone 10:00am prompt with a latest return to the Club of 7.30pm depending on result and weather. Let's give it a good go and enjoy a great day out!!

SCINTILLATING DAY AT HOLM LANE BOTH ON AND OFF THE PITCH!!

A fantastic day was had by all last Saturday with a fantastically skilful and entertaining match taking place followed by a great social atmosphere in the Clubhouse!!

Our visitors Liverpool Collegiate came 'mob handed' with a large travelling support to bid farewell to their 3rd team captain 'Little John' in his last ever appearance for Collegiate. It was great to catch up with true Collegiate greats such as Peter Bown, Jackie Griffiths and Paul Walsh who have done so much to keep their great club alive now that it is so effectively resettled at Liverpool Cricket Club. Many thanks for your socialability.

The game was played at some pace switching ends very frequently and although we went down 55-26 we can have no real complaints. For us MOM Paul Hillan scored two tries with others coming from Mark Hillan and Allan Williams. Ben Sadler added three conversions. Andrew Ventin was firm, fair and friendly in his officiating and whilst not the most mobile of referees he has a real affinity for the game and the players. Great to see you, Andrew, after such a long break and so pleased you enjoyed yourself!!

Billy Lloyd was Match Day Sponsor; much appreciated, Bill, as always and many congratulations too!!

Also many thanks to Matthew Burton for selling the raffle tickets.

This Saturday 12th April sees the last 1st Team League of the season when Knutsford are our visitors to Holm Lane. KO is scheduled for 3pm but may start a little earlier because of our Annual Dinner. The Dinner is on course to be a sell out and we are looking forward to welcoming John Bentley to our club.

The timing is 6.45pm for 7.30pm. with the dress code lounge suits / club blazer and good behaviour is the order of the day; sure to be a wonderful night once more!!!.

The following Saturda 19th April sees our Cheshire Plate Final v Southern Nomads(IOM) at Winnington Park RUFC; please now note the later KO of 12.15pm. The meet at the Club for EVERYONE is now 10am departing very soon afterwards. The latest return will now be 8pm(at the club) depending on result and weather?! The buses are now both fully booked!! If you wish to be on the reserve list you must speak to me! So two fabulous end of season events to look forward to.

For anyone wishing to travel independently, this Google map shows the route to Winnington Park at Burrows Hill, Hartford, Northwich, CW8 3AA.

GOOD RUNAROUND ON A LOVELY SPRING DAY AT HOLM LANE!!

The 1st team enjoyed a comfortable victory against brave and competitive opponents in bottom of the table Helsby who it is hard to believe have not won a game all season! They never gave up and at times played with great skill. We scored plenty of good tries; nine in all but lacked consistency.

There were plenty of good individual performances as can be seen from the try scorers list. Apart from them I thought that Mike Bowe,Mark Barham, Mike Byrne and Mark Hillan had strong games.Despite us scoring plenty of points there was an end of season feel to the game and we will certainly need to up our game against Southern Nomads in the Plate Final!!

Result: Oxton Parkonians 55 Helsby 15.

Scorers:Tries-Andy Smith(3), Allan Williams(3), Matt Dooley, Paul Hillan, Ben Sadler. Cons-Ben Sadler(5).

Team: Andy Smith(Captain), Josh Bowe, Geoff Waters, Barry Owens, Paul Lennon, Ben Sadler, Mark Hillan, Martyn Sharkey, Peter Hillan, Mark Barham, Mike Bowe,Mike Byrne, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Paul Hillan, Liam Evans, Allan Williams, Rob Marnick.

Ref:Billy Coulter(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team performed brilliantly against Prenton at their place and I know that skipper, Doddy, was bitterly disappointed to go down by a 27-12 margin.

This week the 2nds entertain high flying Liverpool Collegiate 3rds at Holm Lane and as there is no 1st team game your support for the 'Super Twos' would be much appreciated!!

This week's match day sponsor was Ian Westwater; much appreciated as always, Ian.

Wishing Terry Williams a speedy recovery from his recent operation; looking forward to seeing you back at the club in the near future.

Please read my articles on the home page re the Annual Dinner and the Plate Final as tickets and seats are going fast.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 22nd March 2014

GREAT BATTLE AT THE PORT!!

We made the short journey to Ellesmere Port and were delighted to play on the best playing surface that we have encountered at Port. The drainage work has been a great success so well done to the club.

It was a cold day with a stiff breeze coming almost directly across the pitch. We 'enjoyed' the slight advantage of this breeze in the first half. Port started the stronger in the first 15 minutes of play and were 14-0 up through two converted tries one of which was a most unfortunate interception; just one of those things! We struggled at the scrummage, and there were plenty of them, although things did improve as the game wore on. We steadily improved as the half progressed without really threatening the Port line.

The second half saw us play some really determined rugby which saw excellent tries from Eric Nixon and Alan Williams who both showed great power in making sure they made their touch downs. The spirit was really good and we finished in the ascendency and I really do feel that if there had been another 10 minutes remaining we would have ended up as victors. Once again we had upped our performance against one of the best teams in the league. Everyone played their part on both sides in a most entertaining and exciting game so well done to all players!!

Eric Nixon was my MOM and he was fearless throughout really carrying the ball forward strongly and always breaching the gain line. Well played, Eric!! Mark Hillan stepping in at scrum half for the injured Craig Hawthorne had a very good game as did Matt Dooley,Danny Blyth Mike Bowe and Alan Williams too when he came on at No 8. Ben Sadler reverted back to stand off and had a steady game improving all the time as the game progressed.Jordan Langton continues to develop week on week In truth though all 18 did their bit!

Thought referee, Andrew Townsend, was very impressive in a totally unfussy manner; well done, Andrew! Good also to see Dave Ewing the Cheshire County RFU rep in attendance. Hope you enjoyed your afternoon, Dave, and good to have a chat afterwards. A real proper rugby union day at grassroots level!!

Result:Ellesmere Port 14 Oxton Parkonians 10.

Scorers:Tries-Eric Nixon,Alan Williams.

Team:Craig Whelan, Eric Nixon, Andy Smith(Captain), Terry Williams, Paul Lennon, Ben Sadler, Mark Hillan, Peter Hillan, Mark Barham, Mike Bowe, Jordan Langton, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Mike Byrne, Alan Williams, Geoff Waters, Liam Evans.

Ref:Andrew Townsend(Liverpool).

Click for more picturesThe 2nd Team also played Ellesmere Port at the club and went down 5-0 in the last couple of minutes to a charged down try. Everyone appears to have enjoyed the game and we were desperately unlucky to lose. Max Prescott was the nominated MOM and is playing really well along with his friend Kieran O'Donnell; they are both really developing their game.

Next week sees the 1sts entertain Helsby with the 2nds making the short journey to the other side of Woodchurch Road to play local rivals Prenton 3rds.

Dinner tickets are going like hot cakes so make sure you see Ken Owen if you haven't already done so.

Many thanks to Jane Burton('The First Lady') for her match day sponsorship; much appreciated as always,Jane, and happy birthday too!! Best wishes also to Danny Hughes and Craig Hawthorne on the road to recovery.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 8th March 2014

LOVELY WEATHER, GOOD GAME SHAME ABOUT THE RESULT!!

Click for more picturesIt was a lovely warm, sunny springlike afternoon, at Holm Lane, with the underfoot conditions so much improved from recent weeks thanks to the clement weather and the hard work of Dave Westwater and his grounds team.

We entertained an Oldershaw side keen to keep the pressure on the top 3. We had grossly underperformed at Belvidere last autumn and were to keen to make amends. It wasn't to be but it was a much closer contest this time round and the rugby on display from both sides was of a high standard. Although we worked very hard and had plenty of possesion and territory we just weren't able to turn this into points whilst 'shaw always looked dangerous in attack with some lovely lines of running from their back line.

They were the better team, yes, but I felt that we had some of the best individual players on display. Skipper, Andy Smith, was my Man Of The Match this week closely followed as ever by 'Mr Everywhere' Matt Dooley. There were strong performances too from Jordan Langton, Terry Williams, Danny Blyth and a very brave performance once more from teenage scrum half, Craig Hawthorne. We wish Craig a very speedy recovery from injury. Referee, Brian Harris had a very strong performance too maintaining good discipline throughout. Many thanks, Brian!

Ref:Brian Harris(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team went down bravely at top of the table Oldershaw by a 52-12 margin.

There are no scheduled games this weekend but we will be seeking a 1st/2nd team friendly game from the fixture pool, preferably at Holm Lane, but whatever the Club will be open from 12.30 for the final round of Six Nations games.

Don't forget your Annual Dinner tickets. See Kenny Owen to reserve your place.

FRUSTRATION AT CAPENHURST!

It was a most frustrating afternoon at Capenhurst after the most pulsating performances against the 'top two' in Trentham and Prenton. We just down seem to be able to raise our game against middle order sides like ourselves.

Although right to the end we might well have drawn the game or even won it in truth we never really deserved to. Cape just wanted it that little bit more on the day I felt. We were never in the right areas for long enough to attack with any sustained pressure. Our strength was in defence, it needed to be, with everyone tackling well.

Good to see Josh Bowe and Paul Wigfield returning for their first full games of the season.Welcome back to both. Mention should be made of young ref, Ben Moore, who had a good game. Well done, Ben! Thanks also to Terry Grundy and all at Capenhurst for their after match hospitality; it was much apprecisted. Even big Kev was most affable, must have something to do with winning?!

Result:Capenhurst 14 Oxton Parkonians 11

Scorers:Try-Andy Smith.Pens-Ben Sadler(1), Terry Williams(1).

Team:Ben Sadler, Josh Bowe, Geoff Waters, Andy Smith(captain), Paul Lennon, Terry Williams, Craig Hawthorne, Martyn Sharkey, Mark Barham, Ben Pearson, Mike Byrne, Jordan Langton, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth, Paul Wigfield, Mike Bowe, John Dunning, Liam Evans.

Ref:Ben Moore(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team, at Holm Lane, had a frustrating afternoon when Hoylake 3rds turned up with only seven players BUT at least to their credit they did turn up unlike Wallasey 2nds a few weeks earlier!! An eleven a side game was played with us victorious by a 55-22 margin.

This week sees league action for both teams against local rivals, Oldershaw, the 1sts being at Holm Lane and the 2nds away 3pm KO.

Don't forget to book your dinner tickets with Ken Owen asap.!!

FANTASTIC WIN AGAINST TOP OF THE TABLE TRENTHAM IN THE SLOSHING HOLM LANE MUD!!

When Chris Hall and I declared the pitch 'playable' at 9.30am we had no idea of the terrible amount of rain we were to receive in the 2 hours before kick off. Our decision looked a very poor one indeed at 2.15pm but probably not at 4pm after a fantastic Parkonians performance!!!

Trentham won the toss and opted to play against a fairly strong and gusting wind. They probably regretted their decision when they found themselves 17-0 down after 25 minutes and it might have been more too!! The whole pack were fantastic with Man Of The Match, Jordan Langton, well to the fore along with Paul Hillan and Danny Blyth as usual.

Mark Hillan, at 46 years of age, came in at scrum half for his first full 1st team game in nearly 2 years and what a great match he had too dictating play at 'the base'. We scored first half tries through Jordan Langton,Paul Lennon and Terry Williams with Terry converting one of them. Trentham, who played very open rugby despite the conditions, pulled back an unconverted try just before the break leaving the interval scoreline 17-5 in our favour.

It was certainly 'backs to the wall time' for much of the 2nd half but our defence was resolute and it took our table topping opponents 25 minutes to add another unconverted try to the scoreline. The last 10 minutes belonged to us with Andy Smith almost scoring twice before Ben Sadler went over wide out in clubhouse corner deep into added time. It had been an epic whole squad effort from Oxton Parkonians culminating in a most thoroughly deserved victory against our worthy opponents.

Well played to all players on both sides in the most dire of playing conditions and also to referee, Dave Hickey, who had a fine game too!! Very well played to Jordan, MOM this week, and for beating Blythy in the 'boat race' despite spilling a fair amount!! Really was a great clubhouse post game atmosphere just what was needed in this most dreadfully wet winter!

The 2nd Team game was off at Crosby St Marys due to their pitch being waterlogged; what was ours' then?!

This week the 1sts have yet another free date with the 2nds travelling to Crewe and Nantwich 4ths for the 3rd round of the NWIL Plate Competition. Our best wishes goes to the whole 2nds squad and let's hope they return victorious!!

Many thanks to this week's match day sponsor, Alan Muir, much appreciated as always, Alan!! Hoping that coach, Danny Hughes, makes a speedy recovery from his recent op.!!

PULSATING PERFORMANCE AT PRENTON !!

Yes, we might have lost and pretty convincingly so in the end but what a mighty shift our eighteen man squad put in on an increasingly windy and rainy afternoon at Prenton Dell. The first half was a real humdinger with no quarter given. We played well throughout the half but were 12-0 down at the 20 minute stage.

However, we were tremendous for the remainder of the first period with the whole team, but especially the pack, attacking most ferociously with Prenton's defence being most magnificent in reply. We were just not able to breach their line!!. In the second half we played just as well in ever deteriorating conditions but eventually we tired and conceded two late converted tries.

The whole match had been wonderful played by two brave and committed sides and very well controlled by referee, Brian Harris. It is hard to single out individuals but for the Parks Man Of The Match has to be the tireless,Danny Blyth; a fantastic game, well done. Others to shine were Jordan Langton, Martyn Sharkey,Mark Barham, Craig Hawthorne and Eric Nixon.

Special mention to veteran prop, Ben Pearson, who came in at the last minute and had a real barnstormer of a game; well played, Ben, good to see you back!! For Prenton, Steven Leahey had a brilliant game followed by Lee Gordon and skipper, Mark Astbury.

But if truth be told all players on both sides were excellent along with ref, Brian Harris, together with the few spectators and touch judges who braved the outside elements for the whole match. A fantastic example of the best of amateur rugby union played at grassroots level!!! Many thanks to Prenton for their hospitality afterwards too especially 'my old mucker' Kiwi.

Result:Prenton 31 Oxton Parkonians 5.

The 2nd Team were due to entertain Wallasey 2nds but they cried off at the very last minute thereby conceding the game to us; not really on to not really turn up with no or very little notice at all.

Next Saturday 15th February sees the 1sts entertain table topping Trentham at Holm Lane when the same level of commitment will most certainly be required whilst the 2nds journey to our good friends Crosby St Marys 2nds. Both games have a 2.15pm KO

2NDS VICTORIOUS IN HOLM LANE MUDBATH!!!

The 2nds marched on into the 3rd round(last sixteen) of the NWIL Plate competition on a truly foul afternoon weatherwise with conditions rapidly worsening as the match wore on. Wallasey 2nds were very game opponents indeed and the scoreline was 0-0 at half time with us playing into the driving wind and rain in the first period.

Gradually with the elements at our backs we wore down our plucky opponents to secure a well earned victory which sees us drawn away to the winners of Crewe & Nantwich 4ths v Linley 3rds(this tie hopefully being played this Saturday 8th February) with the next round's game scheduled for Saturday 22nd February. Well done to all the squad last Saturday and many thanks to referee, Dave Grundy, for officiating so well in the most difficult of playing conditions!! Well done, Dave. Also thanks to Matthew Burton for running touch in the first half and to Dom Verheijen for taking over the reins in the second period.

This Saturday 8th February sees both teams in league action with the 1sts at Prenton in the return local derby and the 2nds entertaining Wallasey 2nds once more. Let's have good player availability and plenty of support for both teams. The games both kick off at 2.15pm.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 25th January 2014

DISAPPOINTING!!

This was a most disappointing game from the Oxton Parkonian point of view with Congleton perhaps gaining their first league victory against ourselves and they thoroughly deserved it too!

We played with a strong wind at our backs in the first half in positively dreadful conditions and we never got going in the first quarter of the game allowing our opponents to gain in confidence and they led 7-0 at half time leaving us with a mountain to climb and although we steadily improved as the game wore on we never going to manage it.

In essence it was a poor team performance although as always certain individuals shone through. Many thanks to referee Colin Kershaw for doing a sterling job in difficult circumstances. I was impressed with new(ish) recruit, Stu Harrison, with Danny Blyth, Eric Nixon, Matt Dooley, Terry Williams and Mike Byrne to the fore.

Again there is no first team game this coming Saturday 1st February but the 2nds are in Plate action at the club versus Wallasey 2nds 2.15pm KO. The 1sts return to league action versus Prenton at their ground on Saturday 8th February. Many thanks to Pete Evans for his matchday sponsorship; much appreciated as always, Peter, and to young Matthew Burton for selling the raffle tickets.

ROUSING 2ND TEAM PLATE VICTORY AGAINST PLUCKY OPPONENTS!!

Click for more picturesThis was indeed a most entertaining and vigorous 2nd team contest, in the 1st Round of The Plate competition, on a cold, grey and windy afternoon! Despite all the recent rainfall the underfoot conditions were really good.

We started in the ascendency against the wind but really did not make the best use of our early territorial advantage and after 15 minutes eased off the gas with New Brighton stepping up a gear and after 25 minutes they opened the scoring with an unconverted try, after putting us under pressure for a good 10 minutes.

There was a short period of 'even steven' before Mark Barham equalled the scores with a good driving run for the line 3 minutes before half time. The interval scoreline of 5-5 was probably a fair reflection of the play so far. We obviously fancied our chances now with the fairly strong wind behind us and some good players to come off the bench as others tired or were just purely rotated.

The 2nd half was a real humdinger with us adding 31 points in total(5 tries and 3 conversions). There were many good performances; first of all in this second forty minutes was the team effort and co-ordination so well done to all. Great to see all four teenagers in the squad performing so skilfully so very well done to Max Prescott, Kieran O'Donnell, Jordan Langton and Ben Sadler. Both Turagas, John and Jay shone.

Thought new recruit Stu Harrison looked really good again when he came on and he really did deserve his try. Great too to see Gareth Taylor rejoining the club and enjoying his rugby. Paul Lennon had his usual good game when he came off the bench as did skipper Matt Dodd. However, the 'Men Of The Match' for me were Mark Hillan and John Dunning; well played gents but in all honesty every single player who took part played well and obviously enjoyed themselves.

This includes our opponents, New Brighton 3rds, who gave us a really hard game and stuck to their task throughout; well done chaps. Thought referee, Conal Scholes, had a fine game too playing advantage really well and having a real feel for the game and the players. Think we will be seeing you doing our 1st team in the very near future. Our opponents in the next round our Wallasey 2nds and we are drawn at home with the tie taking place on Saturday 1st February.Nearly forgot Terry's heroic tight head propping performance when he came on later in the game. Surely this is the future Terry; you have the looks and the brains and the rest will easily slip into place!! Most impressed!

Result:Oxton Parkonians 2nds 36 New Brighton 3rds 10.

Team:Ben Sadler,Kieran O'Donnell,Karl Whelan,Gareth Taylor,Kiel Williams,John Turaga,Mark Hillan,Martyn Sharkey,Peter Hillan,Mark Barham,Justin Danher,Jordan Langton,Max Prescott,John Dunning,Mark Tucker,Paul Lennon,Jay Turaga,Matt Dodd,Stu Harrison,Terry Williams,Dom Verheijen.
Scorers:Tries-Mark Barham,Mark Hillan,Stu Harrison,Terry Williams(2),Jay Turaga. Cons-Mark Hillan(2),Ben Sadler.

This Saturday sees the 1sts resuming league action when they entertain Congleton with a 2.15pm KO. The 2nds do not have a scheduled game as they were due away at St Edwards Old Boys 3rds but they have been withdrawn from the league due to them conceding four games.

Off the field highlights from last week were Craig Whelan's 'gelled up' quiff, Paul Hillan's outdoor headwear and Alan Morris' Snrs 'retro' shirt. Many thanks to Mark Barham for selling the weekly raffle tickets, as his son, Jay, took a rest and also many thanks to the matchday sponsors; the Cusick family. Much appreciated as always. Also great once more to see so many of 'The 45 plus club' in attendance!!

Rugby Update ~ 4th January 2013

On Saturday 4th January the 2nds gained a very good win at home to high riding Wirral 4ths the victory margin being 38-26; well done to all! Meanwhile, the 1sts travelled to Buxton with an understrength team and only one replacement!! The lads battled bravely but we lost 26-0. The game was a very disappointing one, in difficult, cold and windy conditions.

It is not like me to say this but it was totally unsympathetically refereed by a gentleman who was full of his own self importance, had no empathy with the players and did not allow the game to flow whatsoever.Still we deserved to lose but Buxton's captain, coach and officials also were not happy with the standard of refereeing!! As a result of all of this this I have chosen not to write my usual full round up!!

However, what was most evident to myself was that there is a constant need to practise our 1st phase skills at both the scrummage and line out. Without quality possession on a regular basis our chances of winning are much more limited.

To this end it has been agreed between myself, Danny Hughes and Andy Smith that training will continue OUTDOORS on Thursdays at 6.45pm.

In addition we need to train in the conditions we are going to be playing in!!

Also there will be a 1st  team training session on Saturday 18th January(12.30-1.45pm.) as the 1sts have no game until Congleton at home on Saturday 25th January in the league at 2.15pm.

This week, Saturday 11th January, there is no game at the club with the 2nds away locally at Port Sunlight 2nds (get down and support them)!! The following week Saturday 18th January the 2nds entertain New Brighton 3rds in the !st Round of The Raging Bull Plate 2.15pm. KO. Let's have plenty of home vocal support for this one!!

Targeting Promotion?

The 1st XV have played 13 of their 22 league games so far this season, winning 8 and losing 5. If we are to have any realistic chance of gaining promotion then we will need to win the vast majority of our remaining 9 games. It starts Saturday 4th January at Buxton and ends at the Club on Annual Dinner Day versus Knutsford on Saturday 12th April.

Training will be held at the Club each Thursday, commencing Thursday 2nd January at 6.45pm - it is vital that the squad turn up in good numbers to give ourselves a sporting chance of aspiring to this promotion target.

Commitment and good preparation from all players will be the key if we are to put together a good string of results over the next three months!

Looking forward to a successful second half of the season.

BOXING DAY. BROTHERS V VETERANS

The 34th playing of the Annual Boxing Day challenge between The Brothers and The Veterans, for The Beckett Hillan Shield proved to be a great success with the weather treating us kindly and a very competitive match taking place.

Indeed the scoreline was 12-12 at half time until youth told!! There were many good performances with Tony Owens once again rolling back the years at the age of 59 at scrum half for the veterans; being the oldest player on the park. Good to see Paul Wigfield playing and Tim Hassall, Steve Stockford, Karl Whelan and Josh Bowe all played well.

However, it was agreed that this year The Donny Hawker Memorial Trophy for Man Of The Match would go to young Eric Nixon. Well done, Eric!! It was also good to see former greats in Robbie Knight, John Maher and Peter Browne in attendance. Many thanks to Dave Grundy for refereeing with such empathy!! Delighted that once more you enjoyed it, Dave! All in all then a most successful, entertaining and enjoyable day keeping up the fantastic traditions of this wonderful event. Thank you all for your wonderful support and sorry if I have not mentioned you personally!!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 21st December 2013

A REAL CHRISTMAS CRACKER!!

Whilst the majority of rugby union clubs were without any meaningful fixtures, Oxton Parkonians and Helsby were serving up a true feast of pre Christmas entertainment in the semi final of the Cheshire Plate. This was the most competitive Helsby side to play us for a good few seasons and made us fight hard for our victory and in reality the winning margin does not do them justice!

Click for more picturesIt was fierce and feisty from the word go and although we led 21-0 shortly before the interval our opponents were certainly not out of it and came back with two tries to narrow the margin to 21-12 five minutes into the second half. We were to score three more tries but for much of the last quarter things were most even or at times with Helsby in the driving seat. All players on both sides should be congratulated on such commitment and, indeed, entertainment.

Many players performed well for us; so I can't possibly mention everyone, Justin (unless of course you play as well as Richie did last week). Remember first in the queue does not always guarantee a mention in this round up!!

Young Jordan Langton, playing his first full first team game, was outstanding in the second row both 'Dools and Nicko' were impressive throughout with skipper, Andy Smith, running threateningly on many occasions. Continue to be impressed by Paul Lennon and Ryan Evans and Craig Hawthorne had fine games too. A promising debut from the bench for flanker, Stu Harrison; well done, Stu, and welcome to the club!! Everyone else played well too; even I have to admit, Justin, but you are going to have stop bribing me unless it is a lot more!! Also it really isn't on for you, Justin, to suggest that Richie was unavailable due to his annual pre Christmas visit to his health farm?!

Must mention the real Martyn Sharkey try which he did ground but the ref failed to spot! Never mind, Sharks. A word too for the referee, Martin Calcutt, who had a fine game and enjoyed our after match hospitality along with his mentor, Colin Christy, a true Liverpool Referees Society legend. Great to see so many members and spectators up at the club enjoying themselves.

Many thanks to this week's match day sponsor,Alan Muir; much appreciated as always, Alan! We are now into the final of The Cheshire Plate to be played on 'finals day', Easter Saturday 19th April at an, as yet, unconfirmed venue. Our opponents will be the winners of the other Semi Final; Christleton or Southern Nomads. Unless it is exceptionally local we will hire an R&J coach to travel and make a day of it! Watch this space; supporting us at Buxton, on the bus, Saturday 4th January will guarantee you a place on Finals Day!!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 14th December 2013

GREAT ENTERTAINMENT IN A CLOSELY FOUGHT VICTORY

This was indeed a closely fought game with plenty of attractive and entertaining rugby on display. Liverpool University only turned up with 14 players but were deservedly in the lead after 20 minutes by a margin of 21-5! We were caught on the back foot and our tactics were all wrong in this period with us playing far too wide a game.

We then started playing through the forwards and our first try came through an excellent drive for the line by Mark Barham after good play and an assist from Richie Peters. This was big Richie's best game in a 1st team shirt with him being hungry to drive forward with the ball at any opportunity. A big well done to you!! All the forwards Mark Barham, Sharkey, Doddy, Richie, the Evans', Dooley, Blythy and Mike Bowe, when he came on for the last quarter, drove forward well with the ball with Terry and Nicko joining in as 'extra forwards'. We scored further tries in the first half through Matt Dooley, Andy Smith and Terry Williams but none were converted leaving the interval score narrowly in the students favour at 21-20.

We had played against the wind in the first half and now combined with the elements in our favour as well as our change in tactics we were much more in the ascendency in the second period of play. Further tries were added by Terry and Craig Whelan with one being converted and Terry adding on a further two penalty goals.

University only added a converted try to their half time scoreline but in all honesty were never out of the game and were a credit to themselves. Indeed all players on both sides were intensely committed and should be congratulated on serving up such a feast of festive rugby. Special mention also to ref, Jim Bennett, who had a very good game too; so well done to all. Think we might have found the Parkonians answer to Ant and Dec in Dools and Nicko?!

The 2nd Team were away at Anselmians and finally went down by a 35-22 margin in another most entertaining affair.

This Saturday should see the 1sts in action at Holm Lane versus Helsby in the Semi Final of The Cheshire Plate. KO maybe at the earlier time of 2pm. There is no 2nd team game scheduled for this Saturday nor any matches at this stage on Saturday 28th December.

BRAVE, BRAVE EFFORT IN NARROW DEFEAT AT LINLEY

The 1st Team and a handful supporters made the coach trip down to Linley and were greeted by the nomal boggy pitch at the ski centre. Mind, I have seen it much worse. We won the toss and elected to play up the slope and against the breeze in the first half.

We very nearly opened the scoring through Geoff Waters early on but unfortunately he was hauled down 5 yards short. The real difference between the two sides was the scrummage where Linley were very dominant but once the ball was out wider we always looked dangerous but as is the case in these type of situations we really didn't have enough quality possession. It was always a close game and although we mightn't have deserved to win we certainly had our chances and cold have done it!! The scores went 0-7, 0-10, 7-10, 7-15, 10-15, 17-15, 17-20, 17-27 with the final 7 points from Linley coming in the last couple of minutes of added time.

All 17 players played with a real passion considering that we were outmuscled up front. Thought that Liam Evans, Ryan Evans and Matt Dooley were the pick of our forwards with all the backs playing well; Andy Smith and Terry Williams picking up our Men Of The Match Awards from Linley with Eric Nixon also shining. Also well done to Stotty for filling in at hooker for 50 minutes.

Their 'Man Of The Match' was most certainly their young lady physio who frequently 'intruded' onto the playing arena, sometimes even without invitation, bossed everyone around including the referee but then again that wasn't difficult. I have to say that Linley are always our most hospitable opponents and as always they looked after us off the pitch which is one of the reasons why we travel down by coach. Thanks once more, chaps!! Many thanks to our patient driver, John, from R&J. A good day even if it was a disappointing result. This week sees the 1st team at home to Liverpool University in the last league game of 2013.

Result: Linley 27 Oxton Parkonians 17.
Scorers:Tries-Terry Williams,Eric Nixon. Cons-Terry Williams(2). Pen-Terry Williams.

The 2nd Team entertained Mossley Hill 2nds and had a very good 15-0 win with Mark Hillan scoring 2 tries. This week they have a local derby at Anselmians 3rds.

This week's match day sponsor was Richie Beckett. Much appreciated as always.

CLOSE CONTEST BUT WE STILL CONQUER CAPENHURST!

Click for more picturesIt was a lovely clear and still day for the Annual Players Reunion and the facilities and grounds were both in excellent condition for this and for the game against our close rivals, Capenhurst. More on the reunion below in a separate article hopefully accompanied by a full gallery of photographs courtesy of Alan Morris(Jnr) our communications manager.

This game was so much better and more keenly contested than our 37-7 victory at Helsby the previous week. We played very well indeed in the first half gaining excellent tries through firstly Paul Lennon coming off his wing to crash over between the posts followed by powerful drives ending in touch downs from arguably our best defenders, Matt Dooley and Geoff Waters. These were all excellently converted by Terry Williams.

We had three players stepping up from the 2nd team who absolutely played their hearts out!! So very well done to Justin Danher, Matt Dodd and John Dunning. We didn't have it all our own way in the first period and Capenhurst scored two tries of their own leaving the interval score at 21-12 in our favour. We had played well but had not seen Cape off. The line out had gone well with Doddy throwing in consistently accurately and Liam Evans jumping well. There were powerful drives in the loose from Mark Barham, Mike Byrne, Danny Blyth and Martyn Sharkey. The scrum had gone well too but sadly wilted to a certain extent as the game progressed in the second 40.

The second half was a much tighter affair with Cape scoring two powerful tries through their forwards and with the score at 28-24 they had a good shout for a try but fortunately ref, Mark Doyle, was on the other side of the maul. Andy Smith, our young skipper, scored two lovely tries showing the excellent turn of pace that he has one of them being converted by Terry. As Cape piled on the pressure we defended really stoutly with fantastic tackling from everyone the pick of the bunch being Geoff Waters, Matt Dooley(as ever), Blythy and Terry.

Our two teenage backs, Craig Hawthorne and Ben Sadler, continue to develop week by week. Yes, it is a steep learning curve but they are 'getting there'; so well done to Ben and Craig. Thanks also to coach, Danny Hughes, for his patience with us and for teaching so many of the lads 'new tricks' and to Chris Hall too for subbing at the last minute even if he only got the last 75 seconds when John Dunning came off! Anyone not happy with their mention form a queue behind Mark Barham and Liam Evans(only joking lads)!

This Saturday sees one of our annual coach trips to LInley; meet 11.45a.m, all spectators welcome as a 33 seater has been booked. It is not a late, late coach and we should be back at Holm Lane between 8 and 9pm.

The 2nd Team, with Doddy stepping up to the 1sts, travelled to Liverpool Collegiate with only 15 players and fought bravely before going down 64-7. Sadly prop, Mike Gibbs, suffered a nasty injury and we all wish him a speedy recovery. This week the 2nds entertain Mossley Hill 2nds. A special mention to young Jay Barham for all his hard work before and after the gams and for selling the match day raffle tickets. Also many thanks to the match day sponsors, Eric Potter and Eddie Flynn. As always, much appreciated gents.

Annual Players' Reunion

Click for more picturesAs mentioned above it was a lovely day for this annual event and although not as heavily populated as in some previous years everyone enjoyed themselves immensely none more so than Nigel Cliff who regaled us with tales of yore well into the evening! Well someone had to in the absence of Sid Colvin!!

Many thanks to Eric Potter and others for organising the event and to Pete Evans for the lovely hot and cold buffet. Not forgetting the bar staff Chris, Lesley and Cath. Lovely to see you Cath and looking so radiant too, not long before you are headteacher at St Johns.

Eric updated everyone of the good progress being made both on and off the field; just look at the intensity of the listeners in the accompanying photos. Great to see everyone and hope to see you all as often as you can make it! Well done to everyone for creating such a good spirit and for telling so many wonderful stories of the past!!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 16th November 2013

Click for more picturesMUCH BETTER!!

It was a much better performance this week which resulted in a narrow victory at Holm Lane against old rivals, Ellesmere Port who we have rarely beaten in league rugby in recent seasons.

We played with the breeze behind us in the first half towards the Holm Lane end and were in the ascendency for much of the time gaining two good tries through Paul Lennon and Terry Williams with captain, Andy Smith adding one conversion. We could have done with more points in this first period and this proved to be the case for much of the second half with Port gradually getting themselves back into the game kicking three penalties to even up the scoreline at 12-12.

Click for more picturesThis shook us into action once more and after a period of pressure in 'clubhouse corner' Alan Williams powered over 'rolling away' from a driving maul with only a couple of minutes remaining. A victory which we just about deserved but which might have gone either way. However, so much better and more enjoyable than at Oldershaw the previous Saturday.>

Club coach, Danny Hughes has been working hard with the lads at training and there was a good turn out on Thursday evening which needs to continue if we are to make further improvements. Thought Matt Dooley was excellent once more and Paul Lennon had a very good game too! Most players played well but some have a tendency to ease off the gas at vital times! Next week sees us away at Helsby 2.15pm. Away support is always so much appreciated!!

The 2nd Team made the short journey to Ellesmere Port in the reciprocal fixture and went down by the narrow margin of 12-8. Skipper Matt Dodd reports an excellent game played in the best of spirits and that we were , indeed, unlucky to lose.

Good to see Cricket Club Chairman,Stew McEwen come off 'Doddy's Bench' to make  a cameo appearance!

Next week sees the 2nds in local derby league action against Prenton 3rds at Holm Lane.

Many thanks to Eddie Flynn for this week's match day sponsorship. Much appreciated as always, Eddie! Thanks too to Jay Barham and Luke Hillan for all their hard work as usual and for selling the raffle tickets.

I would like to thank the generosity of Club members in making donations , later in the evening, towards the collection in aid of injured players Tony Wood and Rob Marnick. We wish Rob a speedy recovery and all at the club send our new player Tony their best wishes in what will be a longer recovery period. Also sending best wishes to Association Chairman, Dave Westwater, in his recovery too.

Good to see Ben Pearson back at the club after a period of absence. Hope to see you back in playing kit in the very near future!! Well done, Ben, in tolerating my persistent hectoring of youreself as well.

Great to see so many veterans at the club on Saturday as well; a really good turn out - hope to see you all on Players' Reunion Day, Saturday 30th November(12 noon onwards).

Click for more picturesFinally I must mention the Juniors especially the U13 and U15 teams who entertained our old friends Anselmians on Sunday morning. Although we lost both games all the lads in both teams played with great spirit and enjoyment and some of the tackling is immense. I have really enjoyed the recent matches and would encourage other club members to come up and lend their support!

So well done to all players, coaches and this week's referees Mike Heyward and Ian Westwater. Thanks to the 'kitchen witches' for all theirr hard work behind the scenes too and to all parents as well for encouraging their boys and girls to participate in this great game of ours.

"The U13s played Anselmians U13s. We got beat 64 - 5 but played brilliantly against aside who beat former national champions, Lymm, a few weeks ago. Our opposition had some strong Cheshire players, outshining our players' ability and commitment and this proved to be the difference. Our try scorer was Jamie Steele and the whole team deserves great credit for the performance." Mark Hillan

The 45 Plus Club

After yesterday's most generous donation towards currently injured rugby players I feel duty bound to report upon another unofficial section of the Old Parkonians Association and that is 'The 45 Plus Club'!!

More and more I feel that the Club in the winter months late afternoon/early evening is ' held together' socially by these guys! In the 'inaugural meeting' @ 5pm on Saturday 16th November in attendance and in no particular order were Kenny Owen, Kenny Oram, Graham Bennett, Robbie Atkinson, Terry Grundy, Keith Aldcroft, Dave Smith, Richie Beckett, Alan Morris Snr., Alan Morris Jnr., Danny Hughes, Steve Lowndes, Mike Hawker, Stevie Taylor, Peter Browne, Alan Muir, Dave Westwater, Geoff Davies, Alex Drake, Steve Williams, Pete Evans, Chris Hall, Terry Marnick, Mark Hillan(playing), Martin Varley(playing), Peter Hillan(playing), Stew McEwen(playing).

Just missing out i.e. being too young are Tony Berkson and Tim Hassall. Steve Roper maybe but isn't he only 39/41?!

In absentia and regulars on a Saturday winter tea time are Eric Potter, Norman Morris, Paul Corvers, Tony Burton, Steve Barnett, Kenny Cooke, Robbie Knight, Steve Kierney, Carl Handley and Steve Parnell.

Ladies missing out but perhaps in their early/mid 40's Jo Hillan(forgotten your age Jo), Jane Burton(same as Jo just turned 40) and of course Sue Hillan and Anita Handley.

These people are the life blood of the club so much and support the playing side just by being there as well as all the other roles that they take on too! Sure I have missed people out and that you will let me know and very soon too! In the meantime thanks to you all.

Richie Beckett.

IF ONLY..........?!

This will be brief!

Yes, if only 'this had happened and we had done that'!!! There are no excuses, moans or complaints but bizarely we might have won this game but certainly didn't deserve to! Oldershaw played well, even very well at times, BUT we allowed them to do so.

If we can start the game so brightly and finish so strongly whatever happened in the middle 50 minutes when we just didn't compete? There was plenty of individual effort on display at times but we just didn't gel as a unit. However, we will have come away from this game much mentally stronger and are ready for the keen contests ahead of us this side of Christmas.

There is not much more to say really but  a report has to be written whatever the result!!

I thought captain Andy Smith had a good game for us. Also good to see an ex pupil of mine, Robbie Potter, still playing in the Oldershaw 2nd row at the grand age of 42! Robbie made his rugby union debut playing for my Parkonians 3rd team in the centre during the 1996/97 season. Well done, Robbie, keep it going and maybe see you Boxing Day to play in the Veterans team. Good to see his life long pal, Gary Phillips, an ex Parkonian rugby player and cricketer in attendance. A word also for referee, Greg Carlton, who had a good game and a calming influence throughout. Hopefully he impressed his assessor, Duncan Gibb.

2nd Team Skipper, Matt Dodd was delighted with his side's endeavours even though they went down 36-10 to Oldershaw 2nds. Matt commented vociferously on the enthusiasm of all players from veterans to newcomers!! Really pleasing to hear.

This week sees the 1sts at home to Ellesmere Port and the 2nds at Port 2nds; both are league games with 2.15pm KO'S. Let's have plenty of playing and non-playing support.

Good to see Steve Lowndes at the club on Saturday and thanks for your match day sponsorship. Much appreciated, Steve. Many thanks also go to Cara Hillan for selling the raffle tickets.

COULD WE ALL HAVE A BIG PUSH FOR THE ANNUAL PLAYERS REUNION DAY ON SATURDAY 30TH NOVEMBER WITH CLUB AND BAR OPEN FROM 12 NOON ONWARDS.PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! EVERYONE VERY WELCOME.

'DOOLEY'S DAY' IN BRAVE EFFORT AT TRENTHAM.

A somewhat depleted Oxton Parkonians 1st Team squad made the lengthy trek to North Staffordshire to take on second placed Trentham in what turned out to be an enjoyable if somewhat frustrating contest.

The game was error ridden from both sides who perhaps tried to play rather too adventurously in the gusting wind. We played down the slope and with the wind in the first half and went into an early lead through an unconverted try from Peter Hillan wide out on the right hand side. Peter had a good game throughout defying his age and really rolled back the years.

The game was fairly even although we enjoyed territorial advantage for much of the first period and scored a further excellent try through skipper, Andy Smith who showed a real turn of pace to scythe through the opposition defence and touch down under the posts leaving Terry Williams an easy conversion. Whilst trying to create a further score late in the half sloppy passing led to us conceding a breakaway try against the run of play leaving the interval scoreline 12-7 in our favour.

In reality this was never going to be enough against both the wind and the slope and we soon conceded a penalty followed by two converted tries to Trentham leaving the score in their favour 24-12 with around a quarter of the match remaining. There were to be no further scores from either side although it was Parkonians who were bravely applying all the pressure as the game neared its conclusion.

Despite mistakes, and there had been plenty of them, both sides played with passion and total commitment and it must have been as enjoyable to play in as it was to watch. For the Parks as previously mentioned veteran hooker, Peter Hillan, had a very good game as did Terry and Alan Williams and Craig Whelan. However, my man of the match would be Matt Dooley who was truly outstanding with an absolutely fantastic tackle count. Well done, Matt, and keep it up!!

Not far behind Matt was Rob Marnick, once again, whose commitment and bravery is beyond reproach. Rob had to come off towards the end with a serious muscle injury. It turns out that he had torn a calf muscle and will be out of action for around 6 weeks.

All at the Club wish you a very speedy recovery, Rob, and look forward to your return to action. You will be missed!!

Congratulations to young Jordan Langton on his 1st team debut when he came on for Rob; a good rugby future ahead I am sure, Jordan! Many thanks also to the versatile 'graduate' John Dunning for being replacement and for guiding the Sharkeymobile to Trentham?! I would also like to add that I thought referee, Paul Hallom, had an excellent game. Well done!

Click for more picturesThe 2nd Team went down narrowly at Holm Lane 36-31 to our old adversaries Crosby St Marys 2nds in what was a highly entertaining game which after a dire start, according to captain Matt Dodd, might have ended in a very late Parks victory. Good luck with recovery from your injury, Matt!

Great to see, on my return from Trentham, Tony Dever and his clan and Tony and Peter Ohlssen. Great chat and sing song and even a game of spoons. Just like old times, but where was Benji? On holiday so it seems with his Polish girl friend!

Next week there is no league action for our 1st team due to the rearrangement of fixtures by the RFU. The 2nds are due at Hoylake 3rds with a 2.15pm KO.

Lastly is a rallying call to all players to make yourselves available to play as often as you can and to act as replacements when called upon. The last couple of weeks has seen us rather low on player numbers and now that winter beckons what else are you to do?!

Please don't say Christmas shopping as that can be left to Sunday 22nd December!!

PRENTON DESERVEDLY TAKE THE SPOILS IN ENTERTAINING LOCAL DERBY

Click for more picturesPrenton were worthy winners in this highly entertaining game having a real purple patch in the third quarter of play.

We really took the game to our visitors in the first 20 minutes or so but as last week at Congleton we were not able to turn our pressure into points and we only had a Terry Williams penalty to our credit. Rob Marnick was absolutely awesome for us in the first half securing so much loose ball for us on the floor but unfortunately due to injury was not able to continue after half time.

Prenton gained a penalty and a converted try through Stephen Leahey to leave the score at the interval 10-3 in their favour.

Our visitors then had their golden period of 20 minutes in which they scored four converted tries meaning the score was 38-3  with almost a quarter of the match and yours truly fearing the worst. However, Parkonians toughened up and eventually were able to apply some belated pressure. Sadly, it was too little too late and our closest rivals had proved to be worthy victors on the day, despite their slow start. One can see why they currently top the league.

Mike Coffin and Keith 'Kiwi' Jones from PrentonI thought the loose forwards on both sides shone out with for us Rob Marnick, Matt Dooley, Danny Blyth and Ryan Evans to the fore and for Prenton Stephen Leahey, Jamie Reeve and Steve Mc Cready were outstanding. Referee Brian Harris had a good game too even if he did play the longest first half in living memory!!

Great to see such a large crowd too including many old friends from Prenton. Pity about the very heavy showers in the middle part of the game. Both clubs will look forward to the return encounter at Prenton Dell next February when we will be looking to up our performance.

Still, a great day and surely what our wonderful game is all about at true grass roots level.

Scorer:Pen-Terry Williams.

The 2nd Team travelled with a somewhat depleted squad to Wallasey 2nds and went down gamely by a 31-7 scoreline.

Next week sees the last of the 3pm kick offs until next March with the 1sts making the lengthy journey to the North Midlands to play Trentham with the 2nds entertaining old friends Crosby St Marys 2nds.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF SOME 1ST TEAM FIXTURE CHANGES IN THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER AS DECIDED BY THE RFU NORTH COMPETITIONS COMMITTEE. WE NOW WILL NOT HAVE A LEAGUE FIXTURE AT ALL ON SATURDAY 2ND NOVEMBER BUT WILL PLAY THIS ORIGINAL GAME AT HOME TO CAPENHURST ON SATURDAY 30TH NOVEMBER INSTEAD OF HOLMES CHAPEL WHO HAVE WITHDRAWN FROM THE LEAGUE. SATURDAY 30TH NOVEMBER WILL ALSO BE THE ANNUAL PLAYERS REUNION DAY.

Many thanks to everyone for your excellent support on Saturday and to match day sponsor, Ben Sadler, much appreciated, Ben!

HARDLY A WALTZ IN THE PARK JUST A FAIRGROUND DISTRACTION!!

Yes once again the fairground had returned to Congleton at the car park by the side of their 1st team pitch. As normal when we visit The Congs this was a 'tasty affair' which had everyone guessing right up to the final whistle!

We started far the stronger side and for the vast majority of the first 30 minutes camped in our hosts half. However, for all this pressure we cold only claim an unconverted try by Liam Evans after a great break from skipper, Andy Smith. The home team hit back just before half time and scored an unconverted try of their own leaving the scores level at the interval 5-5.

The second period of play was much more evenly contested and Congleton were the first to score with another unconverted try. We then exerted some pressure on the Congleton line and scored a try through a magnificent drive for the line by Paul Hillan. Unfortunately Ben Sadler was again unable to convert.

Terry Williams kicked a fantastic long range penalty to take us into a 13-10 lead with, what we thought, around 15 minutes remaining. It was actually nearer 25 minutes as 11 added, and probably, justified, minutes were played. Due to a lack of self discipline we conceded several penalties in these final 11 minutes but we held out due to some fierce tackling and a refusal to kick at goal by our opponents ending in the narrowest of victories in what had been a nerve wracking end to the game!

An important victory for us against worthy opponents who appear to improve year on year. I thought referee John Harris had a good game in a sometimes difficult match to oversee. For us there is still a lot to work on!!! On the day I thought in the backs Craig Whelan, Terry Williams, Andy Smith and young, Craig Hawthorne at scrum half all played well.

In the forwards Paul Hillan was outstanding once more ably supported by Danny Blyth and Rob Marnick. It was also pleasing to see the front row of Sharkey, Doddy and Mark Barham complete all 91 minutes of the game. Well done chaps!!

Next week see us host our closest rivals and current unbeaten league leaders, Prenton, at Holm Lane in what should be another keen contest!! So all vocal and positive support for the team is required. KO is 3pm.

With Doddy called up to 1st team duties Mark Hillan captained the 2nd Team in a crushing 64-8 victory at home to St Edwards OB 3rds with plenty of tries being scored in a very free flowing and entertaining game. Thanks to Dom Verheijen for being the match day sponsor and for playing for St Eddies. Much appreciated, Dom!! See John Dunning's 2nd Team Report below.

Next week sees the 2nds away in a local derby against Wallasey 2nds at Cross Lane.

Highlight of the day has to be our Association Vice Chairman, Paul Corvers, kicking the second match ball into the river at Congleton causing  a near 5 minute delay to the game!! Many thanks to Matthew Burton for selling the match day raffle tickets and great to see Owen Butler at the club once again.

Sunday morning saw our Under 13 team host Caldy Under 13 and although we were convincingly beaten points wise we put up a very brave and enthusiastic showing with some fierce tackling being put in so once again well done to all!! I have to say that once agin I enjoyed a great game of rugby from both sides played in a very tough but sporting manner and well reffed again by Mark Hillan who played advantage very well ensuring a free flowing game.

2nd Team Report from John Dunning ~ 12th October 2013

Parkonians 2nds vs St Edwards OB 3rds

A sinking ship finally pulls into port in October

The start of Parkonians 2nd team 2013-2014 season has been a difficult one with players stepping up to the 1st Team, a couple of last season's players leaving and injuries to some key players, it's no wonder we have had such a poor start.

September had some very difficult fixtures for us against some good opposition with the 2nds only just managing to get a side together. However even with poor results the team spirit was ever present and we have not allowed our heads to drop.

That spirit has carried us through and has now been rewarded with two back to back victories.

Last week we entertained Port Sunlight who had not had the best start themselves to the campaign. However local derbies are always unpredictable, and as usual we made it more difficult for ourselves than it should have been. However, with some good back play we came away with a 36-19 victory which was hard fought but well deserved.

On the 12th October we had another home fixture a against St Edwards OB who we have had some very hard games against over the past few seasons. Last season we won at home in a close game and lost away in another close game.

St Edwards as ourselves have struggled so far this season and struggled to get 15 men on to the pitch. They came to Holm lane with 13 men but Dom Verheijen very kindly offered them his services and Parks were able to start the game with 15 men. Many thank to St Edwards for coming and Dom for playing a full 80 mins for them.

Going into this game Parks were able to field a strong side with Barry Owens being able to make his first appearance of the season and Dave Gallwey also returning to action. Also, a new number 8 Taff who unfortunately picked up an injury early on - we all wish him a speedy recovery.

As always, in the first 20 minutes of the game Parks had the majority of the possession but silly mistakes meant we squandered good try scoring opportunities. 20 minutes in and we were 3 three points down after giving away some silly penalties. Parks eventually made use of their possession with good graft from the pack and great hands from the backs that was a joy to be part of.

This was reflected in the final score line of 64-8 with a number of players going across the line. Its was the best display of support play from Parks 2nds I have seen for a long time, with everyone getting their hands on the ball. Barry Owens had a strong performance at 12 with some powerful runs and hard tackling. Karl Whelan also had another good performance with two tries himself.

Credit must also go to our younger players. Kieran showing his strength a pace to score again, Jordan also having another solid performance, this time at second row and Max Prescott scoring his first try for Old Parks - well done Max. I think the 1st Team will be watching these players with great interest to see how they progress over the coming weeks.

An all round great performance from all the players on the day against a resolute St Edwards side. We wish St Edwards the best of luck for the rest of the season and hope they can resolve their player shortage over the coming weeks as it is always an enjoyable fixture.

Next week sees us travel to Wallasey 2nds which is never an easy fixture but we can win if we play as we know we can. Also, if we can train as a team we will improve and keep winning, so lets get ourselves down and work on our skills and fitness.

There is also an important message from our Captain Matt Dodd for next week. He has asked if everyone can remind him that he owes us two jugs of beer after his disgraceful yellow card and the 2nds putting more than 50 points past a team.

Result: Parkonians 2nds 64  St Edwards OB 3rds 8

OPENING LEAGUE VICTORY FOR THE 2NDS ON AN ENTERTAINING AFTERNOON AT HOLM LANE

Click for more picturesIt was again a lovely autumn afternoon for rugby when our 2nd Team entertained Port Sunlight 2nds at Holm Lane. It was indeed baffling that both teams were without a league victory before the start of the match considering the entertaining and flowing rugby that followed.

We were much the stronger team in the first half with good tries coming through young Kieran O' Donnell, who I thought had a most impressive match, John Turaga and John Dunning. John Turaga converting two of them leaving us 19-0 up at the half way mark. The 2nd half was a much more even contest with Sunlight posing a real threat and they actually edged the 2nd period 19-17.

We scored further tries through Ben Sadler, Martyn Sharkey and John Turaga again with Ben Sadler converting this final and most welcome touchdown for us as our opponents were really 'breathing down our necks' at this stage. Sharkey's drive for the line was a full 20 metres but later in the Bar his run appeared to have started from deep in our own half!! Anyway, well done Martyn and it is nice to report on a real try from you for once.

It had been a very good all round performance from ourselves but credit must be given to Sunlight for their 2nd half comeback and to referee, Dominic Kirkbride who had a strong game too!!

Inspirational captain, Matt Dodd, gave Tony Blease his Man Of The Match Award and indeed Tony had had a strong game in the line out and all around the park too putting in his fair share of tackling duties. There were strong performances from John Turaga, returning from injury, Karl Whelan, Simon Dunning (improving all the time still, Si), young Eric Nixon getting back into the swing of things after his summer break abroad and from Justin Danher at No. 8. Justin has been after a mention for ages and yes he did play well too!!

Veteran half backs Mark Hillan and Ian 'Sick Note' Westwater enjoyed themselves immensely and both had influential games; well done both. In addition it was good to see Ian last the full game although it was in doubt right up to the final whistle?! Apologies to Tony Wood for calling him Paul all afternoon shouldn't happen again?! Hopefully, this will have proved a real confidence boost to Doddy and his squad for future weeks starting next Saturday when they entertain St Edwards OB 3rds. The 1sts return to league action when they travel to Congleton in what I feel sure will be a keenly contested affair.

Junior Rugby

Click for more picturesSunday brought the first Junior Rugby matches of the season to Holm Lane with the Under 10, 11 and 12 squads entertaining Wallasey whilst the U13's played Trafford MV on the newly recreated 'old 5th team' pitch that had been marked out the day before by Ben Whelan, Jay Barham, Luke Hillan & Liam Westwater.

Yours truly watched this one and the whole squad played out of their skins winning comfortably. The passing handling, pace of running and tackling was a real joy to the eye.

While we won comfortably credit should also be given to our opponents and our lads who took their turns willingly to help out opposition numbers.

Click for more picturesWell done to all players and coaches and to Mark Hillan who reffed very well indeed.

The other matches saw around 250 players and spectators at the Club, with another very enjoyable day for everyone that came alond.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 28th September 2013

SO SO MUCH BETTER FOR THE 1STS!!

There was a much much improved showing by the first team this week when we entertained our visitors from Derbyshire, Buxton, at Holm Lane on a lovely early autumn afternoon perfect for running rugby and after a rather slow start that is what we got.

Click for more picturesThe self discipline from the whole team was a great improvement from the previous week and it was our visitors who gave away the penalties and got marched back 10 metres on several occasions by referee, Roy Gladden. We opened up the scoring fairly early on through a pick up and drive from the base of the scrum from No. 8, Ryan Evans who in doing so did not cause a single hair on his head to be displaced!! Well done, Ryan!

Buxton hit back and scored a converted try to take a 7-5 lead. Shortly before half time a well played backs move culminated in skipper, Andy Smith racing over to touchdown. Once again we could not convert our try. 10-7 in our favour at half time. The second 40 was a real humdinger with us just having the ascendency helped by much better self control than our opponents. However, it was Buxton who scored first before Terry Williams hit back for us with an excellent try converted by Ben Sadler who later added a penalty goal when our visitors transgressed once more to leave the score at 20-12. We tried very hard to get our 4th try which would have given us the extra bonus point but it just would not come.

Buxton kicked a late penalty to give them one point for losing by a margin of 7 points or less. A very enjoyable spectacle for a fairly sizeable crowd. I was impressed by the whole squad on the day so well done to all!! That is not to say that isn't room for improvement because there is still plenty that can be done in most areas of the game.

I was most impressed with our back row of Paul Hillan, Danny Blyth and Ryan Evans augmented by replacement, Rob Marnick, who came on when Paul moved up into thr front row in the last quarter of the game. Paul H continues to put in consistent performances as ever; long may it continue. Terry Williams, Matt Dooley, Andy Smith and Paul Lennon all had strong games too; and there was a promising first game in the 1st team playing at scrum half for teenager, Craig Hawthorne.

Coach, Danny Hughes, was much happier with his squad's performance especially as a team unit displaying good control and self discipline. In his post match briefing Danny also emphasised the need for all players to train on a regular basis, as there will be some stern tests ahead, if we wish to challenge for promotion! Credit to our opponents, Buxton, and referee, Roy Gladden, for contributing towards making this such a keenly contested affair!

The 2nd Team were really struggling for players this week due to injuries and unavailabilities but to their credit went to Wirral but unfortunately went down by a large margin. This week they entertain Port Sunlight 2nds whilst there is no game for the 1sts as it is one of our free dates from league action.

I was delighted in my after match speech to announce PAUL LENNON as our September Player Of The Month. Paul hugely deserves this honour as he has put in 'the hard yards' in training and has made the grade in stepping up to be a 1st team regular. Very well done, Paul, and keep it up! Many thanks to this week's match day sponsor , life member, Steve Kierney. Much appreciated, Steve!!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 21st September 2013

DISAPPOINTING DAY ALL ROUND!!

I had ventured last week that I might be writing a fuller report this week as I was actually going to be watching the game for the first time this season. However, this is not to be the case. After two opening promising league victories there was great disappointment for the 1st Team when they travelled to Liverpool University.

Yes the opposition were young, very fit and skilful too but we failed to compete in so many areas of the game. True also that refereeing decisions went against us at times but that cannot excuse three of our squad going to the sin bin and two at the same time practically. There needs to be greater self discipline shown and a real desire to play for and support your team mates as coach, Danny Hughes, said at the end of the game. If we are to be more consistent then more people have to train more often if our goal is to aim for promotion.

For much of the first half we were in contention but once the half hour mark passed it was always the students who were in the ascendency. Still that is bad day over so onwards and upwards with us welcoming Buxton to Holm Lane this Saturday in what should be a tough and exciting encounter. Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 14th September 2013

TREMENDOUS TWELVE TRY TONIC!!

The first 1st team league game of the season at Holm Lane produced a twelve try feast of rugby! Indeed we opened the scoring within the first minute and it also included a golden sixteen minute period of rugby where Terry Williams scored a hat trick of tries.

Paul Lennon again played a great game and bagged himself two touchdowns as well and on Sunday morning he completed the Hoylake 10K run alongside his 90 year old Grandad in the most challenging of conditions!!

The eighteen players in the squad for this game against Linley have all trained pre season and the vast majority for most of the sessions too. We are already beginning to reap the benefits of Danny Hughes' no nonsense and experienced coaching but there will be much sterner tests ahead I am sure. To be fair our visitors stuck to their task and grabbed themselves two consolation tries.

Next Saturday sees us away to Liverpool University where yours truly will see the squad perform for the first team this season. So maybe a more detailed report might follow?!

Result:Oxton Parkonians 78 Linley 12
Team:Terry Williams,Paul Lennon,Geoff Waters,Andy Smith(captain),Craig Whelan,Ben Sadler,Gareth Pryce,Martyn Sharkey,Peter Hillan,Mark Barham,Liam Evans,Mike Byrne,Matt Dooley,Danny Blyth,Paul Hillan,Alan Williams,Richie Peters,Ryan Evans.
Scorers:Tries-Terry Williams(3),Geoff Waters(2),Paul Lennon(2),Alan Williams,Andy Smith,Ryan Evans,Craig Whelan,Danny Blyth. Cons-Ben Sadler(9)
Ref:Terry Clarke(Liverpool)

The 2nd Team travelled to Mossley Hill and went down gamely by a 20-5 margin. Next week they entertain Anselmians 3rds at Holm Lane in what should be a keenly contested local derby. Many thanks to last Saturday's match day sponsor, Alan Morris Snr and also for organising the raffle as well.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ 7th September 2013

NEW SEASON STARTS; MIXED FORTUNES FOR OUR TEAMS!

It was fabulous to greet the start of another rugby season with a more than creditable win for our 1st Team under the new leadership of our Head Coach, Danny Hughes and Club Captain, Andy Smith. We won away at Knutsford by a 14-27 margin. A more detailed report from a roving reporter may appear in tandem with this summary. I was still on cricketing duties so missed the game!

I am delighted to report a first try for the 1st team for Paul Lennon who has come to the game late and loves the game and the Club and always trains hard and is so very reliable. Paul Lennon, you are my player of the weekend, very well done. Danny Blyth scored a very good try also with an assist from guess who, yes, Paul Lennon.

Matt Dodd, 2nd team captain, stepped up to the mark playing at hooker very creditably indeed before being replaced at 55 minutes by our veteran player, Peter Hillan, commencing his 34th playing season at the club. I am led to believe from secret sources that Mark Barham had a very strong game especially in regard to scrummaging prowess.

Result: Knutsford 14 Oxton Parkonians 27
Team:Terry Williams,Paul Lennon,Geoff Waters,Andy Smith(captain),Craig Whelan,Ben Sadler,Gareth Pryce,Martyn Sharkey,Matt Dodd,Mark Barham,Mike Byrne,Liam Evans,Matt Dooley,Danny Blyth,Paul Hillan,Peter Hillan,John Dunning.
Scorers: Tries-Paul Lennon,Andy Smith,Danny Blyth,Craig Whelan. Cons-Terry Williams,Ben Sadler Pen- Terry Williams.

The 2nd Team entertained New Brighton 3rds at home and it was disappointing to see former players Mike Cardus and Les Donnelly in their ranks as we gave them their first opportunity in our great game. In my opinion they should both be still with us and in Les's case he shouldn't really have been in the clubhouse as he owes past subs!!! After a promising start we went down 19-62.

I NOW COME ON TO THE VERY SERIOUS MATTER OF UNPAID ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTIONS. THERE IS A VERY SMALL MINORITY OF PALAYERS AND NON PLAYERS WHO NEED TO SORT THIS OUT IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS. IN ADDITION TWO PLAYERS WERE ALLOWED TO PLAY BY MYSELF WHEN THEY OWED PAST SUBS. THIS WAS A ONE OFF AND WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN!!

Thanks to Mal Evans for his match day sponsorship; always appreciated and to Matthew Burton for running the weekly raffle. Next week sees the 1st Team at home against Linley and the 2nds travelling to Mossley Hill.

From a Roving Reporter in Knutsford...

After visiting several grounds around Knutsford I eventually arrived at the College site to find a well grassed , recently mown and not very well marked pitch where coach Danny Hughes was putting the team through its final preparations on a breezy afternoon.

OPs received the kick off with the wind and slope at their backs but were unable to move out of their own 22 as a result of  handling errors and early season nerves. A Knutsford 5m scrum was resisted and more pressure sustained with vigorous tackling. Passing errors continued from both sides but Knutsford looked the more cohesive in the early stages.

A penalty saw OPs into the opponents half after 17 minutes and from a lineout on the 22 good ball was won and passed effectively and crisply along the backline with a loop move before reaching winger Paul Lennon. The writer is delighted to report upon a great winger's finish with the classic inside feint and power outside run around his opponent to score on the 15m mark. A fabulous try created by good lineout ball from the forwards and excellent back play. Terry Williams narrowly missed the conversion. 5-0.

5 minutes later OPs were back in the Knutsford half and were awarded a penalty which Terry W converted from 35m.  8-0.
Following the restart Knutsford briefly occupied OPs 22 attacking the blind side with forwards driving. However they lost the ball and OP swiftly moved the ball through 2 hands to Terry Williams who shrugged off 2 tacklers and broke through to halfway before placing a deft kick over the approaching full back. Landing on the 22 it was gathered by captain Andy Smith who escaped 2 would be chasing defenders to score close in.TW successfully converted. 15-0.

There was then a settled period of play with both sides attacking and defending solidly. Knutsford continued to look for space around the base of the rucks and the blind side at the maul and perhaps should have done better. However , OP defended solidly and were awarded a penalty on their own 5m line on 32 minutes. A solid kick saw the ball about to land on halfway on the 5m line with 2 Knutsford players attempting to gather , without a call. Not surprisingly , they collided and the ball went into touch and while they were looking at each other Paul Lennon took a quick lineout to Danny Blythe who speedily outpaced the defence to run in to score under the posts. Excellent following up rewarded by a much deserved try. TW just missed the conversion.  20-0 at half time.

At the restart OP camped in opposition half for 10 minutes without any success and Terry Williams sustained a calf injury and was replaced with Craig Whelan moving to fullback. At the same time Peter Hillan came on as replacement hooker. These changes resulted in a drop in intensity and Knutsford saw more possession and using the favourable conditions spent several minutes attacking the tryline from 5m scrums and short penalties. Despite stout OP defence they managed to drive over for a converted try.   20-7.

Some OP handling errors and further good use of the wind and slope saw Knutsford on top for the next 15 minutes but without success. Clever use of space and better handling saw OP into the Knutsford half and on 75 minutes solid forward play delivered good ball to the backs where the centres created space for Craig Whelan to power through from the 22 to score under the posts. Ben Sadler made the conversion.   27-7. (and the bonus point)

As the game entered injury time Knutsford had another period of sustained pressure and despite the visitors best efforts managed to score another crash through try which perhaps reflected their continued doggedness during the game. Successful penalty.   Final Score  27-14.

Danny Hughes, Coaches view -  "A good game , with good progress made from last week.4 well engineered tries"
Roving Reporter's view - "Occasionally scrappy with too many handling errors. BUT -a solid scrummage and effective lineout with some slick back play"

Guesses to Richie for identity of Roving Reporter. (There is a big clue in the 3rd paragraph)

New Rugby Season Starts At Last!! ~ Saturday 31st August

Yes, here it is again - the start of an eagerly awaited new rugby season!!

A hard core of around 20 players plus have been working hard under the experienced guidance of new Head Coach, Danny Hughes, in preparation for this coming Saturday's opening competitive games. Last Saturday saw a mixed squad take on Christleton at Holm Lane ending in a narrow victory to ourselves.

This Saturday 7th September the 1sts, under the new leadership of Andy Smith, travel to Knutsford in South Lancs/Cheshire Division 3 whilst the 2nds, under the continuing leadership of Matt Dodd, entertain New Brighton 3rds at Holm Lane. Both games have a 3pm KO as do all games in September and October.

I wish all players, coaches and non-playing members, whether senior or junior section, a most enjoyable and successful season.

Just a couple of reminders:

  • Subscriptions
To those who haven't, and it is a minority, please could you pay your subs ASAP by joining WebCollect online or by completing and leaving an application form (also available at the Bar) with 12 months subs in cash at the Bar.
  • Discipline
I would like to remind everyone of our code of conduct in conjunction with the RFU especially with regard to sporting behaviour both on and off the field. There is zero tolerance regarding any verbal abuse of match officials at any level. The change in disciplinary regulations sees the RFU returning to immediate suspension following a player sending off until the Cheshire RFU disciplinary hearing together with our own club hearing. Of course I am hoping that all of this is unnecessary and ask for your co-operation and support at all times.
