Cricket Courses for Juniors

Cheshire County run junior cricket courses between mid-September and mid-November at various locations - the nearest to us being at Birkenhead School.

If anyone is interested then please visit the website http://www.cheshire-cricket-development.org.uk and click on Courses For Children on the left-hand side and at the bottom of that page click on Download Application 2 pages
(If anyone has any problems with this then give me a call).

These courses are very good and provide great Autumn coaching before our indoor nets start at the beginning of February.  I would encourage any Junior to attend.

Welcome to the 2018 Cricket Season

From Stew McEwen, Chairman of Cricket

Stew McEwenI said something almost the same at this time last year and I’m very pleased to say it again: “New Season, New Division”, well for the First XI that is.  Back to Back promotions now see us in the UKFast Cheshire Cricket League Division 3.  We can safely say it was a good result following the merger of the Leagues for the 2017 season. Unfortunately the Second XI fell just short of a promotion but all players continued to play with heart and commitment.

I am very pleased that competitive, open age Saturday cricket continues to thrive at Old Parkonians Cricket Club in 2018.  Unfortunately the horrendous weather we experienced throughout the Winter, continuing into Spring, has meant a slow start to the season, with the first First XI game postponed, together with many others, until later in the season.  However, the Second XI were able to play away at Chester Boughton Hall and came away with a 10 wicket victory with outstanding performances from three players.  The postponement of the First XI first game could not be avoided as the preparation of the ground was impossible, with our inability to get the necessary machinery onto the waterlogged ground.  Hopefully things will improve but it will many weeks before the water table drops and conditions become ideal for top class cricket to be played.  There is an urgent need for players and others to make themselves available when asked to assist with the essential work – please look out for appeals from the Captains and our ever hardworking volunteer grounds people.

For various reasons junior cricket players, coaches and organisers/managers are in short supply.  I urge all players and other to think about how they could help revive the interest in our junior cricket efforts.  If anyone can make themselves available to contribute please let me or any other member of Committee.  Junior cricket is the life blood of the Club and we should do all we can to ensure it continues.

The pre-season social was a resounding success again – many thanks to all the organisers, participants and those who donated prizes, sponsored races and bought horses.  It does provide essential funds for the continued running of the Club and improvements to it.

One important development coming soon is the total refurbishment of the road planned for later in May.  There will be more news on this provided elsewhere on the website together with the restrictions in place during the work which has been arranged in such a way so that playing will not be affected, other than some changes to access to the Club via the road on just one weekend.

We have continued to recruit new players.  Again for 2018, the Sunday Development XI has a full and competitive fixture list and as we have so many players available for selection it is important for those players not selected for a Saturday to make themselves available on Sundays.  That said, it remains important for all players to let the Captains know of their availability.

After last season’s success I hope everyone will do their bit to make this season just as successful.

All the best for the new season.

Stew McEwen
Chairman, OPCC
