Cricket Club Presentation Night ~ Season 2013

Click for more picturesFrom Richie Beckett...

A most successful and enjoyable annual presentation evening for both the Junior and Senior Cricket Sections was held in the Clubhouse on Friday 11th October 2013.

The Junior awards were presented by myself, as Club President, in the earlier part of the evening after a very bright season for all age groups and in particular the Under 9's who so narrowly missed out to Neston on finals day at Oxton by the slimmest of margins.

Old Parkonians CC ~ Junior Award Winners, 2013

Under 9 Batting Frankie Hughes
Under 9 Bowling Adam Lacey
Most Valuable Player Sam Thomas
Under 11 Batting Nathan Bradshaw
Under 11 Bowling Jenson Mackie
Coaches Award Tom McSherry
Under 13 Batting Dan Berkson
Under 13 Bowling David Flynn
Coaches Award Sam Bamforth

Special mention should be given in the Under 13 age group to Ben Thomas who despite scoring the most runs(198) at an average of 49.5 still missed out, just, on winning the batting award!!

Ben played for the 1st, 2nd and Sunday friendly teams as well as for Wyncote Ramblers CC in the course of his adult season and bats, bowls and keeps wicket most skilfully. Well done, Ben, and keep it going for the future!!

As well as Ben, Dan Berkson, Liam Westwater and David Flynn all played regularly in adult cricket for the club and we wish them along with all young players a bright cricketing future at Old Parks CC of course!

Old Parkonians CC ~ Junior Award Winners, 2013

1st Team Batting Nick Hitchell
1st Team Bowling Adam Westwater
2nd Team Batting Peter Fearon
2nd Team Bowling John Orr
Young Player Of The Year Adam Winstanley
Duck Bat Chris Beckett
Captain's Prize Rob Marnick
Bob Bell Memorial Award Peter Bradshaw

Special mentions should go to both Rob Marnick and Peter Bradshaw. Rob was an ever present in the 1st team and all aspects of his game have come on immensely and I am sure that he will carry on improving next season. Well done, Rob.

Pete is our junior secretary and was last season's Under 11 manager and so much more in so many ways and is also very heavily involved in our rugby junior section. This is a richly deserved award and Bob would be proud of you,Pete!!

It was a very mixed season at adult level with the 1st team managing to stave off the threat off relegation from CCA Division 1 gaining a highly creditable 10 point draw at unbeaten champions, Haslington, on the last Saturday of the season!

However, the 2nd XI were relegated and will play in Division 4 next season. I would like to thank Chris Hall for the wonderful catering on the night and also to Liz for all her cheerful hard work behind the bar and to thank those people who donated raffle prizes. Finally a reminder that the cricket club AGM is in the clubhouse on Monday 25th November at 7.30pm; do please try to attend as after all it is your club!!

Junior Cricket Roundup from Pete Bradshaw

We can say two things with absolute certainty about the 2013 junior cricket season:Click for more pictures

Firstly, the weather has been an awful lot kinder to us than in 2012 (but that is not difficult) and secondly our U9 team know how to win cricket matches. The U9 team, managed by Andy Thomas, have all blossomed at the same time into year 4 players with a couple of years of playing experience under their belts. Comprehensive defeats of New Brighton; Chester Broughton Hall and Oxton, to name but a few, have shown what a quality side they are and the fact that they only lost two games all season makes them our most successful junior cricket team ever. The season ended in the U9 knockout cup final at Oxton, against Neston, on the 18 August which they lost narrowly. Outstanding performance from Andy and the lads, keep it up and keep the momentum going into next season in the U11 age group with helmets; pads and corkies!!!

The U11 team has also shown some signs of consolidating themselves with over half the team now being into their second year in the age group. Wins against Capenhurst (twice) and Oxton B (twice) as well as Port Sunlight have offered testament to that, as well as a close defeat by 17 runs to Irby B. All players have shown real improvement and it is hard to pick out individuals. Noteable though has been the bowling of Nathan Green; Jenson Mackie (keep growing into a 6ft 4in fast swing bowler!!) Tim Berkson gets better and better; Nathan Bradshaw can leg spin it square on the right surface (as well as being the six hitter supreme!!) and Matty Hassall and Will Shaw surprise themselves when they put a bit more effort into their bowling. New lads Ben and Tom Mcsherry has also chipped in with runs and fielding contributions. The year 5 lads have really contributed as well noteably Lorcan's wicket keeping; Ethan Hitchell's left arm over bowling and Joe Wilson's all round bowling and batting. Who can forget Ellis Handley's 22 against Irby ? Our biggest area to work on is running quick singles and attacking batting. Keep up the improvement as we all head to U13 next season.

The U13/U14 have also been able to demonstrate some really talented cricketers. A number of 35not outs this year, notably from Ben Thomas and Dan Berkson have been great to watch, and the overall competence and attitude of our older age group has been fantastic. Although we have a couple of kids a year older than the official age limit the whole purpose has been to get them playing cricket and it has been great to see them win a number of games against Oxton ; Irby; New Brighton B and Wallasey. Towards the end of the season we also gained a few new U13 lads who took to the game really well despite only limited experience. It is really pleasing to see that a few of the kids are now playing 2nd team cricket for us; being successful and not looking out of their depth. Once they are 13, the ECB rules allow joint participation between adults and juniors so hopefully we will see a few more graduate to playing adult cricket for the club in the 2014 season when they will contribute even more.

Finally thanks to all of the coaches and helpers, notably Adam Winstanley ;Craig Hawthorne; Stew Mcewan and Andy Thomas. Also to Steve Roper and Steve Williams who helped us get the new net cage and equipment and Ted Kearny; Dave Westwater and Steve Roberts for all the ground work.

The club will be holding a small presentation evening on Friday 11th October starting at 6pm. Please keep an eye on our website and twitter account for more details. Next season we will start indoor nets in March (same applies keep an eye on our website) and we hope to be running all age groups again. We will enter U11 and U13 teams in the Wirral Junior Cricket League and are likely to enter an U15 team in the North Cheshire Junior Cricket association. This league sees us play a BIT further afield possibly as far as Warrington and Northwich. I will update you all with further details when I get them.

We do not currently have a coach/manager to start a new U9 squad, if you are interested and think you can spare the time then please let me know, I believe we would be able to find players but not without a manager.

It was fantastic to welcome Eddie and his Yorkers side after an absence of a couple of years. A 35 overs per side match was agreed  with Yorkers batting first and making 145-9(Ian Gilbertson 47). Dan Berkson 7-0-37-3, Alex Harrison 7-0-34-2 and Liam Westwater 6-1-20-1 Old  Parks surpassed this total making 149-1 in 24.3 overs. Adam Winstanley 51 rtd. and Terry Marnick 50 rtd. (Pictured)

Beckett's Bat & Bawl ~ Saturday 4th May 2013

The very mixed weather meant a rain affected game for the 1st team away at Wistaston Village with Chris Hitchell winning the toss and inserting our hosts who made 147-8 off their 42 overs. Rob Marnick 14-2-47-4 and Chris Beckett 21-4-66-2. In reply Old Parks made 105-7 meaning the game ended in a draw with us only able to claim 6 points. Beckett's Bat & Bawl ~ Saturday 27th April 2013

We returned to the scene of our cup defeat last Sunday with an unchanged and full strength team. Skipper Chris Hitchell won the toss and promptly installed our hosts Appleton. Exactly two hours later and in 34 overs we had dismissed them for only 99. Chris Beckett 17-6-36-5 and Rob Marnick 6-2-22-4 were the wicket takers; so well done you two. In addition Tim Hitchell bowled a lively opening spell 9-5-15-1.

After tea we commenced our innings and worryingly were soon 9-2! However, an unbeaton 91  third wicket partnership between Tim Hitchell 78* and Craig Hawthorne 15* saw us comfortably home to a 20 point eight wicket victory at the early hour of 4.51pm.! A great team performance and a wonderfully fluid innings from Tim. Many thanks to panel umpires Tony Fowles and Phil Goodall.

Team:Nick Hitchell,Tim Hitchell,Chris Beckett,Craig Hawthorne,Greg Lindop,Adam Winstanley,Mike Hitchell,Chris Hitchell(captain),Adam Westwater,Terry Marnick,Rob Marnick.

The 2nd XI at Holm Lane against Appleton 2nds found it hard going but once again performed creditably. We batted first and made 90 all out with debutant Arthur Irwin top scoring with 15. Ian Jones would like it to be known that he and Arthur's last cricket game on the same side was for Upton CC some 35 years ago. Appleton knocked off the total 93-2 comfortably but Dean and his side remain upbeat and the spirit between both our teams after in the members lounge  was great; a real hark back to the old days. Let it continue!!

Team:Carl Brannon,Dave Gallwey,Andy Moxley,Mal Priaulx,John Orr,Arthur Irwin,Ian Jones,Dean Dunwoody(captain),Dan Berkson,Alex Harrison,Stewie McEwen.

Next Saturday 4th May sees the 1sts at Holm Lane entertaining Stretton and the 2nds travelling to new opponents in Kerridge 1sts. Both games start at 1.30pm as will be the case until the 4th Saturday in August.

Remember we are always on the lookout for new players both young and not so young; the range of ages in our 2nd XI last Saturday was 60 years!!

Junior matches start this coming Sunday 5th May after a most successful week of coaching and a well attended registration evening. Remember junior practice is 6.30-7.45pm each Wednesday outdoors at our ground in Holm Lane followed immediately after by seniors practice.

Beckett's Bat & Bawl ~ Saturday 20th / Sunday 21st April 2013

The new cricket season finally arrived on a beautiful sunny spring like day with our 1st team travelling to Rylands CC(Warrington) in Division 1 of the Cheshire Cricket Alliance where a great drama unfolded. We won the toss and elected to field and bowled out Rylands for 169 with Chris Beckett bowling unchanged and returning the figures of 23-3-72-5 ably assisted in a much briefer spell by Adam Westwater 8-0-19-4.

In reply we started terribly and were 54-6 at worst before a remarkable recovery took place enabling us to win the game by 2 wkts taking 20 points finishing on a total of 172-8 with 5 overs to spare. Chris Hitchell 51* and Adam Westwater 34(who batted superbly) enjoyed a thrilling and most successful 78 run 8th wicket partnership. Greg Lindop added a more than usefful 27 batting at five. A brilliant start and well done to all the team listed below.

Team:Nick Hitchell,Tim Hitchell,Chris Beckett,Craig Hawthorne,Greg Lindop,Adam Winstanley,Mike Hitchell,Chris Hitchell(captain),Adam Westwater,Terry Marnick,Rob Marnick.

Young PlayersFollowing last season's promotion our 2ndXI are now playing in a very strong Division 3 of the Cheshire Cricket Alliance and they will be playing several 1st teams including last week's opponents the very strong Westminster Park 1st XI who batted first and made 237-2(dec.).

In reply we could only muster 70 runs but there was an excellent spirit on the day under the leadership of new captain, Dean Dunwoody. There were three Under 14 players playing in Dan Berkson,Dave Flynn and Liam Westwater who all acquitted themselves very well indeed as well as the welcome return of veteran campaigner, Malcolm Priaulx. Well done to Dean and all his team mates young and not so young.

Team:Carl Brannon,Mal Priaulx,John Orr,Dean Dunwoody(captain),Pete Bradshaw,Ian Jones,Dave Flynn,Dan Berkson,Alex Harrison,Liam Westwater.

Sunday saw us travelling on a fairly bleak afternoon to Appleton, again on the outskirts of Warrington, for the 1stXI league knockout cup. We had terrible lack of availability which meant that we only had nine players including two young 1st team debutants in Dan Berkson and Liam Westwater who both performed very well indeed with Dan scoring 9 runs in 35 mins/ 27 balls and Liam taking his first senior wicket!

Well done lads and also to Alex Harrison who offered the most stubborn resistance in her innings of 38 mins/ 39 balls. We elected to bat first and bravely made a total of 116 with Terry Marnick 35, Chris Beckett 31 and skipper, Chris Hitchell 22* all batting well. In reply Appleton knocked them off comfortably for the loss of 2 wkts with Craig Hawthorne doing a splendid job keeping wicket which is not normally his position.

Team:Terry Marnick,Chris Beckett,Dan Berkson,Craig Hawthorne,Sean Marnick,Liam Westwater,Rob Marnick,Alex Harrison,Chris Hitchell(captain).

This Saturday's league games sees both sides playing Appleton with the 1sts travelling again and the 2nds playing at Holm Lane; both games start at 1pm before reverting to 1.30pm from the beginning of May. A promising and enjoyable start to the season; bring on this Saturday!!

Junior Cricket Update from Pete Bradshaw

A brief update of things relating to Junior Cricket:

  • We resume our pre-season indoor nets on Monday 8th April at Birkenhead Park at 7pm, we then have indoor sessions on the following Mondays15th and 22nd April.
  • Our first outdoor session will be at Holm Lane on Wednesday 24th April between 6-7:15pm.
  • We will then hold our registration night (fill in your membership forms; pay your subs; have a beer etc.) with the bar open on Friday 26th April starting at 6pm. We will also hold another outdoor session for the kids that night, so you can fill in your forms and have a peaceful beer at the bar whilst the kids train.
  • First games are Sunday 5th May and provisional fixtures are now on the web site.
  • We should have Old Parkonians C.C. junior shirts in the coming weeks, so if your kids want a new shirt hold off till they are delivered. Price will likely by about £16 for a club shirt with our badge on.
  • We also have a lot of new training equipment being delivered in the coming weeks to hopefully make the sessions better; more interesting and more fun for the kids.
  • Our two new level 2 coaches, Craig and Adam, have begun to take some sessions.

There is always lots to do to make the ground and club ready for cricket. To this end there will be a working party at the Club this Saturday 13/4/13 starting at 10:00. If you feel you can lend a hand please some to the ground as soon as you can on Saturday after 10:00. Our groundsman and chairman, Dave Westwater, will find you a job to do, no previous experience necessary!!

Thanks for your continued support and if you have any questions drop me an email.

Easter Sunday Social 2013

2013-EasterSundayThe Easter Sunday Social was held as usual this year and got lucky with the weather!

Association Chairman, Dave Westwater, Rugby Chairman, Richie Beckett and Cricket Chairman Stewie McEwen are pictured catching a few rays.

An excellent afternoon was enjoyed by all with the usual selection of food and entertainment.

Further social events are due to take place later in the year as the Cricket Season commences shortly.

Check this page for further details.

Welcome to the 2013 Season

From Stew McEwen, Chairman of Cricket...

It's less than 3 months to go before the new season, which begins with a 1st XI pre-season friendly against a Liverpool 2nd/3rd XI on their main pitch on Sunday 14th April at 2pm.

The following Saturday 20th April, see the start of Cheshire Cricket Alliance (CCA) league season with the 1st XI away to Rylands (Warrington) in Division 1; and the newly promoted into Division 3, 2nd XI in a highly competitive game at home to Westminster Park 1st XI (previously Chester Asians) I thought now was a good time to bring you up to speed with a few developments. But first…..

Kicking off with some urgent news – winter nets have moved to Monday night, with the first one being this Monday 11th February at 8pm at Birkenhead Park. Please, I implore you to come along for many reasons. Not just for the honing of your undoubted skills and rekindling last season's form, exorcising the cold-weather induced demons, catching up with those you may not have seen for a few months and, finally, doing your bit to ensure that the money invested in providing winter nets is not wasted. Don't forget we have to pay for the nets booked irrespective of the numbers attending. The more people who attend and contribute the less the potential financial loss on something that's provided for your benefit.

The Junior nets will begin on Monday 18th March at 7pm immediately before senior nets. The same applies as above and I encourage the usual suspects to come along with new and existing juniors. Junior coaching and organisation is one of the keys to our future, if we do not coach and organise them then another club will. The Junior season starts on Sunday 5th May, and we are hoping to run three age groups again, so ask yourself if you can spare a couple of hours for 1-2 Sunday mornings to umpire or score a game and help share the load.

At winter nets time Old Parkonians Cricket Club always extend a warm and friendly welcome to new recruits of any standard and former players wishing to spend Saturdays and some Sundays playing cricket.

For those of you who were not at the AGM and have been in hibernation I am pleased to tell you that we have 3 new captains. It's a welcome return to Club and 1st XI Captain for Chris Hitchell. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say that we're looking forward to your new ideas for both on and off the pitch – Good luck.

2nd XI Captain is Dean Dunwoody, who put himself forward and was elected unopposed. Thanks Dean for this commitment, I look forward to playing under your stewardship - if selected, of course.

If all goes well, Sunday Cricket Captain Greg Lindop will lead the return of Sunday friendly cricket - thanks Greg for stepping forward. I'm sure you'll do your best to arrange teams to honour the fixtures being made by the returning Fixture Secretary Richie Beckett.

Thanks to last year's captains, in particular to Carl Brannon for steering his 2nd XI to promotion to Division 3 against all the odds, eg starting 25 points behind the rest and sometimes playing with 9 men (Alex – you know what I mean!). Carl was captain for the last 5 seasons and I hope he continues to improve his batting for years to come! Adam stepped down as Club and 1st XI captain after 2 seasons. The main reason being that as a new Dad he would not be able to put in the required time and effort such a post requires (and Emma said he wasn't allowed to anyway!).

We have two young soon-to-be qualified coaches in the shape of Adam Winstanley and Craig Hawthorne - thanks to both of them for showing such commitment to the club. I hope you're both enjoying the training and looking forward to putting your newly acquired skills into practice with the juniors this season and in seasons to come.

Finally, the usual Easter Sunday Social will go ahead - watch out for further details of that and other activities over the coming weeks. Of course, you can get such information first-hand by coming along to nets on Mondays!

Stew McEwen
Chairman of Cricket

Stephen McGenity

From Richie Beckett...

I have to report that very sadly talented young local cricketer, Stephen McGenity, passed away last Saturday 26th January.

Stephen, who was only 30 years old, had suffered a massive stroke the day before. Married to Roxanne, they had three young children.

Stephen was the dearly beloved son of Billy and Maureen and had played cricket at Birkenhead St Marys with his Dad since he was a small boy; where Billy is still 1st team captain. For the last two seasons Stephen had played most successfully at local Cheshire County Premier League side, Oxton. However, it was his intention to return to St Marys for the 2013 season.

All at Old Parkonians CC wish to offer Billy, Maureen and family our greatest sympathy and our thoughts are with you at this tragic time. Stephen, Billy and Maureen are well known to many of our members.

Stephen's funeral is at St Josephs, North Road, Birkenhead on Thursday 7th February at 1pm., where cricket sweaters are requested to be worn, followed by cremation at Landican and a celebration of Stephen's life follows @ 3pm at Birkenhead St Marys CC.
