Annual Dinner & Awards ~ Saturday 11th April

We enjoyed an excellent evening for our Annual Dinner at the Clubhouse on Saturday 11th April.

The meal was fantastic thanks to Chris and Lesley Hall and all waiting on and bar staff; it is very much appreciated.

We were very pleased, once more, to welcome Cheshire President, Martin Wroe who was also our guest speaker. Below are listed all of our guests along with all the details of our award winners.

Our Guests

  • Cheshire President(Guest Speaker): Martin Wroe
  • Liverpool Refs Society: John Tomkins
  • Port Sunlight: Bob Gurney
  • Wallasey: Tony Render
  • Anselmians: Ged Mahoney
  • Cricket Club Chairman: Stewie McEwen
  • Club Coach: Danny Hughes

There were apologies from our Association Chairman, Dave Westwater, who we wish a speedy recovery after a nasty accident whilst working at the Club a few weeks ago. Our good friend Terry Grundy (Capenhurst President) was not able to attend due to his son getting married and there was an on the day apology from Steve Fogg (Oldershaw Chairman). Sadly there were no shows from Wirral, Birkenhead Park and, surprisingly, Prenton.

Annual Awards

  • Most Improved Player. Brian 'Gus' Cusick Memorial Award: Jamie Forshaw
  • Young Player Of The Year: Harry Eastwood
  • The Richie Peters Award. 2nd Team Player of The Year: Max Prescott
  • Captain's Prize: Liam Evans
  • Player Of The Year: Terry Williams
  • Clubman Of The Year: Kenny Owen

Congratulations to all award winners you richly deserve the honours. We were also pleased to give dinner tickets to Harry Eastwood, Danny Blyth, Max Prescott, Mark Barham, Craig Whelan and Craig Forshaw either as players of the month or trainers of the month.

Well done to all.

Richie Beckett. Chairman/President. Oxton Parkonians RUFC.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 11th April

SOLID VICTORY AGAINST A USEFUL CAPENHURST SIDE

After the opening 10 minutes I wondered whether we would win this game at all?! However, in the end we deserved our comfortable win but should have won by a much greater margin if we could have improved our handling skills. There was some entertaining rugby from ourselves once we had come to terms with their bulky pack with good games from all the front row plus Liam Evans, Ben Sadler, Gareth Taylor and Jamie Forshaw. Ben Sadler kicked excellently for goal converting five of his six attempts. Many thanks to referee, John McDaid who 'soldiered' bravely on despite pulling a calf muscle early on in proceedings.

The 2nds finished their league programme at Prenton going down convincingly whilst battling bravely against a vastly experienced side. They do not have a game this coming Saturday. However, Matt Dodd concludes his 3 year tenure as 2nd team captain with a friendly against touring side Gnosall RUFC(Staffordshire) at Holm Lane on Saturday 25th April with a 2pm KO.

The 1sts end their season this Saturday18th April with their final league game at Congleton 3pm KO. This sees the end of Andy Smith's 2 year spell as Club / 1st Team captain.

Well done to both skippers for all their hard work and dedication over the years; it really is so much appreciated.

CHESHIRE PLATE FINAL. AT WINNINGTON PARK RUFC V OLDERSHAW RUFC.

GREAT CLUB DAY OUT! DISAPPOINTING RESULT.

This was yet again another great Club day out with unfortunately one vital ingredient missing - the winning of the trophy.

Expectations were high when all players and spectators met at the Club at the early hour of 9.15am. Fifteen minutes later we were on our way on two coaches courtesy of R&J Travel. We arrived at the excellent facility that is Winnington Park RUFC an hour before the 11.30am KO with the playing squad changing and warming up whilst the adult supporters commenced on the beer/wine/buffet etc.

The game kicked off on time and we were in the lead in the second minute through an excellent try from Harry Eastwood wide out on the right with Ben Sadler not able to make the conversion.Oldershaw hit back in the tenth minute with a converted try to take a 7-5 lead and for much of the first period were in the ascendency although we did hit back with a Terry Williams try following a drive from the lineout, in the 35 minute to reduce the deficit to 10-17 but on the stroke of half time 'Shaw scored another touchdown to leave them in the lead at 22-10 at the interval.

Although we competed much more strongly in the second period it was never going to be enough. Oldershaw added two further tries, one of which was converted, and a penalty too before we gained a consolation try through Ryan Evans. Although we played with spirit we were never really at our best and Oldershaw were thoroughly deserving winners on the day so well done to them and their supporters.

I thought Danny Blyth, Liam Evans and Pete Hillan played well for us. Many thanks to ref Phil Stokes who maintained excellent control of the match. A massive thank you to all our supporters whether travelling on the coaches or coming under their own steam; it was much appreciated once more. As always the atmosphere from ourselves was fantastic in the bar too. Finally a big thank you to our ever patient drivers Mike and John from R&J!!

Obviously this Saturday 11th April sees The Annual Dinner (6.45pm meet) with Cheshire President, Martin Wroe, as special guest.

The 1sts have a home league game against Capenhurst which may have a slightly earlier kick off of 2.30pm whilst the 2nds have their final league game away at Prenton 3rds. Finally thanks once more to everyone for their wonderful support this past weekend at the final, back at the Club, and also at the Cricket Social on Easter Sunday.

FABULOUS WIN FOR THE SUPER SECONDS!!

Yes, this was a marvellous win for Matt Dodd's last home league game as skipper. It was a most entertaining affair throughout with Mossley Hill playing their part too and many thanks also to ref Damian McDonald who had a good game as well. We scored six tries to Mossley Hill's two. Gareth Taylor was given MOM by captain Doddy but others will have run him close with Terry Georgeson, Karl Whelan, Rob Rawson and Tommy Manger playing well along with the captain of jug avoidance, 'Two Try Teddy'.

New recruit Jonathan Sheridan kept us amused too?! This was real entertainment for a healthy crowd as always. Well done to all players; you obviously enjoyed it immensely and a special mention to Doddy who has enjoyed a great three year spell as captain. A final league game to come for the 2nds at Prenton 3rds beckons on Annual Dinner Day, Saturday 11th April with a final friendly match at Holm Lane on Saturday 25th April against a touring team from Staffordshire; Gnosall RUFC.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 7th March

'SCINTILLATING STUFF'!!

Click for more picturesTo say this was a really fantastic game is an understatement!! Either side could have won and indeed neither side deserved to lose in an enthralling contest. Parks started the better and scored an excellent try within two minutes through the ever improving young winger Harry Eastwood.

We maintained the momentum for quarter of an hour before Ramsey dramatically upped their game demonstrating why they are league leaders! They enjoyed a purple patch and went into a 15-5 lead before we hit back once more gaining a powerful try through No 8, Terry Williams, which was converted by Ben Sadler with Ben adding a penalty goal not long after to level the scores at 15-15.

Before the interval Ramsey hit back once more to score a converted try giving them the half time lead of a 22-15 scoreline. The game had been exciting and was evenly posed but no one could have guessed what the second period was to bring with both the game and scoreline ebbing and flowing throughout!!

It wasn't long before Ramsey increased their lead by 3 points after Parkonian indiscipline; this heralded a stunning comeback of our own resulting in some fantastic play by ourselves which resulted in 19 points in as many minutes for the home side. The titanic Terry Williams scored two mighty tries, one of which was converted by Ben to give us a lead of 27-25 with Ramsey beginning to panic just a little. This led to our final try of the game through an Andy Smith interception following a flawed quick lineout taken by our visitors with Ben adding the conversion points to surely give us an impregnable lead of 9 points at 34-25.

Still Ramsey came back scoring a converted try to narrow the margin at 34-32. The pressure was beginning to tell and we conceded a penalty which was successfully converted giving the lead back to our opponents once more at 35-34. Surely our chance had gone?

But there was to be further drama deep in time added on. We drove hard for a final score causing Ramsey to carelessly give away the penalty. Young Ben Sadler coolly stepped up to the mark and with great precision slotted the winning points through the posts. This was a far from straightforward kick but Ben's goal kicking was very good on the day.

In all honesty the game could have gone either way and perhaps the draw would have been the fairest result?! However, thankfully it was to be our day!! Congratulations to all players on both sides for putting in such a mighty effort. Referee Dave Hickey had an excellent game throughout and was strong enough to deal with any difficult decisions. Well done, Dave, some referees might have found this game to 'hot to handle'.

Although once more this had been a real team effort I have to give Terry Williams the MOM for an amazing display of power and passion including a hat trick of tries. Really well played once more, Terry. Our last ditch defence was superb with the ever reliable, Geoff Waters, making some splendid tackles! Ben Sadler beside his goal kicking had a good game as did Harry Eastwood and it was pleasing to see Paul Hillan coming off the bench for his first action of the season after serious injury; some strong carries, Paul!!

Elder brothers Mark and Peter also played well. The plus points are the improvement made to our rucking game and improving attendances at weekly training and I must congratulate Danny Hughes and Gareth Pryce as coaches for their patience and enthusiasm! However, we need to improve on self discipline and cut out unnecessary penalties and yellow cards. Also, we should learn not to kick so much in open play giving our opponents the chance to counter attack.

Our thoughts are with replacement prop, Mike Gibbs, who suffered a serious injury towards the end of the game; everyone wishes you a successful and as speedy recovery as is possible, Mike. In conclusion a superb day at the club in real spring like weather with a good attendance!! Glad that Ramsey enjoyed themselves with us off the field in their limited time available. Thanks to Kenny Owen and The FT Club for their match day sponsorship; much appreciated as always chaps. Also thanks to Ella Pearson for selling the raffle tickets.

The 2nd Team did not have a game due to Ruskin Park dropping out of the league and at the moment there are no scheduled games for next Saturday 14th March; any games from now on will be at 3pm until the end of the season. Remember to book your dinner tickets for Saturday 11th April with Kenny Owen asap.

Finally, we wish our Association Chairman, Dave Westwater, a speedy recovery after his nasty accident on Friday 27th February whilst working at the Club. Everyone hopes to see you back in action at the club in the near future, Dave.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 28th February

GREAT GAME VERSUS WALLASEY AT CROSS LANE!!

In my opinion this was the most exciting and skilful game that our First Team have been involved in all season, even though we lost by a 25 point margin!! It was high octane stuff well officiated by ref, Dave Jones, who was always up with play and kept a firm control on proceedings throughout. Well done, Dave!!

Wallasey started much the stronger and dominated both territory and possession in the opening 15 minutes or so. The score remained at 0-0 for a fair period partly due to our resolute defence and partly due to the fact that our opponents could not convert their penalty attempts at goal. Something had to give, however, and Wallasey took an 8-0 lead through an unconverted try and a penalty.

Then we hit back in some style and with much power too we score a try through Terry Williams following a powerful scrummage and shortly after Ben Sadler added a penalty goal to level the scores at 8-8. Wallasey followed up with a further unconverted try to take a 13-8 lead. Back we came again powering forward for Eric Nixon to surge over strongly for a fabulous touchdown fairly wide out which was excellently converted by young Ben Sadler giving us the lead at 15-13. Wallasey were rattled but we eased 'off the gas' allowing Wallasey to sneak into a narrow lead of 18-15 at the interval following another unconverted try by our hosts.

The second period did belong to Wallasey and they were the better side and thoroughly deserved their win but the scoreline of 40-15 did not do justice to the seventeen strong Parkonians' squad performance. Craig Whelan was my MOM who had a fine game and is surely one of our most consistent performers. Terry Williams excelled once more exuding much passion and power in his play. Excellent games from Eric Nixon, Danny Blyth and Liam Evans too with Mike Bowe doing well when he came on.

A special mention to Jamie Forshaw who improves with every game considering that we have 'thrown him in at the deep end' really. Well done to all players on both sides for providing the healthily sized crowd with such an entertaining spectacle. This Saturday sees the 1st team entertain league leaders, Ramsey(IOM) at Holm Lane in what should be a really good game. There is a 1.30pm KO to accommodate our visitors travel arrangements to and from Manchester Airport.

Result:Wallasey 40 Oxton Parkonians 15

Scorers: Tries - Terry Williams, Eric Nixon. Con - Ben Sadler. Pen - Ben Sadler

Team: Craig Whelan, Harry Eastwood, Andy Smith(Captain), Geoff Waters, Eric Nixon, Ben Sadler, Mark Hillan, Martyn Sharkey, Mark Barham, Ben Pearson, Mike Byrne, Jamie Forshaw, Liam Evans, Danny Blyth, Terry Williams, Mike Bowe, Josh Bowe.

The 2nd Team also played Wallasey at home in a most entertaining spectacle with the scores finishing level at 15-15. Good to see veterans Tony Burton and Alan Morris(Snr) playing a part in the action. Our opponents seemed to enjoy themselves as they stayed awhile and also won the weekly raffle too!

This Saturday there is no league action for the 2nds due to scheduled opponents, Ruskin Park, withdrawing from the league; we will probably try for a pool game.

On Sunday I went to watch our Under 16's play at New Brighton they went down 29-14 conceding two very late converted tries. This was a very even game and the lads were a credit to themselves, their coaches and the club itself. We hope that many of this squad will integrate into adult rugby in the next year as each one of them attains their 17th birthday. Well done again lads.

Also a great result on Sunday for our Under 14 squad who defeated arch rivals, Caldy, which gives us all great pleasure, of course!! Well done to everyone concerned. Many thanks to last week's Match Day sponsor, Eddie Flynn; much appreciated as always, Eddie!

EXCELLENT CONTEST AND WIN AT OLDERSHAW!!!

Click for more picturesGareth Pryce aked me "How are you going to describe this one?"; well here goes!!

I think everyone at both clubs were expecting a close game but perhaps not in the way it 'panned out'. To find ourselves 17-0 up after only 12 minutes was purely incredible yet it was thoroughly deserved. We scored two wonderful tries through Andy Smith and Mike Byrne the latter being a real team effort. Obviously we could not continue to score at this rate but we surely thought that we might score again in this first period with the chill north westerly wind at our backs.

Gradually, Oldershaw got themselves back into the game or rather we let them! They went on to score two tries one of which they converted adding a penalty goal as well to leave the interval score narrowly in our favour at 17-15. The home team now had the wind at their backs and they dominated proceedings in the third quarter scoring a further unconverted try to give them a 20-17 lead. We then came back strongly with a real team effort to take control of the game with captain Andy Smith scoring two scintillating tries demonstrating his real raw pace. Oldershaw's, and their supporters, heads went down and there was no way back for them although they had played their part in a most amazing display; not always top quality skills but one never knew what was going to happen next with all players on both sides giving 100% effort.

Obviously captain, Andy Smith, was outstanding bagging himself a hat trick of tries and was my MOM but was very closely followed by Terry Williams, Danny Blyth, Liam Evans, Eric Nixon and Harry Eastwood. Peter Hillan returned to the fray after a couple months out through injury and played very well including a great ankle tap preventing a certain Oldershaw touchdown. Good also to see Mark Barham returning too, coming on as a second half replacement, after his successful operation. Again I must stress that this was once more a real team effort by all 19 players involved. Well played Oldershaw too and thanks for your hopitality as always! The two clubs 'lock horns' once more in a matter of weeks when we meet in the Cheshire Plate Final on Easter Saturday 4th April at a still as yet to be decided venue!!

Ref:Brian Harris(Liverpool).

The 2nd Team were faced with a stiff task when they entertained Crosby St Marys 1sts at Holm Lane but as usual played with great spirit, even though they went down by a 50-12 margin. Our tries came from Jordan Langton and Chris Hall with Richie Peters being given the MOM. Fabulous to see Junior Section coaching member, Jonathan Sheridan, making his adult debut and also welcome back to Les Donnelly who signed up after the game. Also a full game for Tim Hassall too!!

Many thanks to our match day sponsors Association Chairman, Dave Westwater and Alan Muir. Much appreciated as always. Many thanks too to Ella Pearson and Cara Hillan for selling the raffle tickets. It was good to see Tony Dever back at the club if only in a social capacity; nice hair, Tony.

This coming Saturday sees both teams in league action against local rivals, Wallasey. The 1sts make the short journey to Cross Lane with the 2nds being at Holm Lane.

This is the last week of 2.15pm KO's although an advance word of warning that when the 1sts entertain Ramsey(IOM) on Saturday 7th March this match has a 1.30pm KO due to our opponents travel arrangements.

A really good atmosphere in the club last Saturday enjoying our wonderful facilities; great to see, keep it everyone!

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 14th February

BRAVE EFFORT AT LINLEY!!

We traveled down to North Staffs for our rearranged league match with a much changed squad once again but no one can fault the effort put in by our twenty man squad; we just ran out of steam in the second half against a much bigger and more experienced set of forwards.

The game started slowly on a very heavy pitch as is the norm at this time of year at Linley and we fell behind by an 8-0 scoreline without much of a challenge by ourselves. This then seemed to spur us into action and we had a very good second quarter of the game giving us a 15-13 lead at the interval. Terry Williams was outstanding and scored our two tries.

However, we were never really in the game in the second period enjoying neither possession or territory with Linley scoring three/four of their tries from driving mauls following line outs. We did our best but on the day it was never going to be enough. Terry was our MOM with Craig Whelan having a good game and Mike Gibbs was very solid too. I thank all players and I was glad that all replacements were able to come on for at least a little action.

Thanks to travelling supporters Gareth Pryce,Richie Beckett,Mike Marnick,Keith Aldcroft,Ken Owen and Dave Smith. Also thanks to Mike our R&J coach driver and to Linley as always for their hospitality. This coming Saturday sees league action for both of our teams with the 1sts making the short journey to Oldershaw and the 2nds entertaining Crosby St Marys at Holm Lane. Just a reminder that we have 2.15pm KO's until the end of February.

DESERVED WIN OVER SPRIGHTLY STUDENTS

Click for more picturesA lovely lunch had taken place prior to the 1st Team game. It is reported on here and was held as a big thank you to all Development Members, sponsors and volunteer workers for their contributions both financial and otherwise over the years. In addition it was to celebrate the official opening of our recently completed fully refurbished members lounge. It looks wonderful; well done to all concerned. The attendees were near sixty in number and a good time was had by all. Many thanks to Chris Hall and staff for the wonderful meal and service.

We were then able to step outside on what was a cold but pleasant day to watch a most keenly contested game of rugby on a great surface following much hard work in the week by Dave Westwater and his groundwork team. Many thanks, it is much appreciated.

The game was a very close one indeed with the first score not coming until the 34 minute when skipper Andy Smith went over for a fine try converted by Ben Sadler. On the stroke of half time University levelled the scores with a converted try of their own leaving the scores level at the interval of 7-7.

The second period continued in much the same vein as the first with neither side dominating. In the 52nd minute following a driving maul from a lineout Terry Williams powered over with Ben Sadler adding the conversion points. Ben added a penalty five minutes later giving us a 17-7 lead. With ten minutes remaining our plucky opponents hit back scoring an unconverted try to put them in striking distance being only 5 points adrift.

However, Andy Smith crowned a very good personal performance gaining a fabulous touch down in the last minute of playing time. This had been a very enjoyable spectacle and credit should go to all players on both teams and to referee, Terry Clarke, who had a good game displaying his usual empathy with the players. Well done Terry you have passed this season's MOT!! I thought all Parkonian players performed well but special mentions this week to Terry Williams, Andy Smith, Craig Whelan and Liam Evans. Second team captain Matt Dodd coming in at hooker had a good game too; well done Doddy!

Unfortunately, at the moment for various reasons we are struggling for playing numbers which resulted in us having to concede our 2nd team league game at Prenton.

Next week the 1sts travel to Linley for our rearranged league game. Travel is with a coach from R&J Travel, the meet being 11.45am at the Club with a return to the Club @8.30pm. There are only a couple of spaces left on the bus so let me know if you wish to travel as a supporter asap. There will be no game at the club as the 2nds have a free league date and the scheduled friendly has been cancelled by our would be opponents.

Saturday saw the 7th anniversary of our great friend Brian 'Gus' Cusick; seeing the Cusick/Bowe/Clarke family as match day sponsors and we were able to toast the great man after the game with the traditional Aussie whites. It was good to have Mel and Paul Bowe at the club. Many thanks as always for your sponsorship; much appreciated.

Many thanks to young Luke Hillan who had a fine game as touch judge and also to Matthew Burton for selling the raffle tickets. In addition I would like to thank the players who acted as a replacements and did not get on to the park; it is always important to have a full squad and disappointing for whatever reason when people do not get a piece of the action in closely contested games such as this when the Captain / Coach have difficult decisions to make.

FABULOUS COMPLETION OF THE REFURBISHMENT OF THE MEMBERS LOUNGE

Click for more picturesIt was fantastic indeed to have the newly refurbished members lounge in use for the first time on Saturday. It is very impressive and members took full advantage enjoying the luxury and comfort of our new facility!! Many thanks must go to the RFU and in particular Tom Bartram RFU North Facilities Manager, The Peter Johnson Foundation Trust and the generosity of club members ensuring the financing of this exciting project; it is so very much appreciated.

We very much have a Club with ever increasing modern facilities, clubhouse and grounds that all members should feel very proud of.

On the playing front the 1st Team entertained a very spirited and sporting Knutsford side. The game was most entertaining, played in a very self disciplined manner, and the result could have gone either way. It was a testament to all players on both teams for putting on such a flowing spectacle in somewhat difficult underfoot conditions.

Mention should be made of referee, Mike Callan, who had a very good game throughout. There were some wonderfully skilful tries from both sides including three from our skipper, Andy Smith, who had a fine game along with the ever present Danny Blyth. They are my joint Men Of The Match. Chris Sharkey did a splendid job coming in at hooker and there were good games from Mark Hillan, Barry Owens and Eric Nixon. Gareth Taylor looked strong when he came off the bench. Ben Sadler kicked a couple of excellent goals as well as scoring a try himself.

The 2nd Team had a difficult afternoon travelling bravely to New Brighton 3rds with only 14 men, although they did lend us players. Sadly we went down 69-0.

Next week the 2's have a rearranged away game at Liverpool Collegiate 4ths whilst we hope that the 1sts will travel for a local derby 'friendly' at Prenton

Many thanks to Matchday Sponsor, Pete Evans, much appreciated as always. Great to see Carl Jones on such good form and continued good luck with your recovery!! Also your old photos were very interesting indeed. Thanks to young Luke Hillan for selling the raffle tickets.

REMEMBER THE 1STS AWAY COACH TRIP FOR THE LEAGUE GAME TO LINLEY ON SATURDAY 31ST JANUARY. THE MEET IS 11.45AM WITH A RETURN TIME OF @8.30PM AT THE CLUB. WE HAVE SPACE FOR AROUND 10/12 SPECTATORS.

Just have to say what a brilliant atmosphere there was at the Club both on and off the field. Long may it continue. Many thanks to everyone.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 10th January

HAPPY NEW YEAR! TWO WELCOME WINS!!

Happy New Year to everyone!!

Click for more picturesThe first league Saturday saw two good wins by both of our teams on what was an exceptionally windy Saturday afternoon. I declined the offer of a lift to Helsby and decided to watch the 'Mighty 2's' at home against a feisty Ormskirk 4th Team which included both Ohllsen brothers, Peter and Tony.

We played towards Holm Lane in the first period with the gale behind our backs and were the dominant force in the first quarter securing unconverted touchdowns through Ben Pearson and Gareth Taylor. As the half developed so did 'Kirk's attacking qualities begin to challenge us and indeed they scored a very skilful converted try to leave the half time score narrowly in our favour at 10-7.

For much of the second period our opponents continued to exert pressure on us but our strong defence held up. Gradually Ormskirk tired and the last 10 minutes belonged to the Parks finally resulting in a well worked try for Kiel Williams who I thought had a fine game. We were worthy winners against very creditable opponents who were always in the game.

Well done to all players on both sides who thoroughly enjoyed their afternoon!! Captain Doddy playing on through injury having a very good game whilst marshaling his troops as well. However, it was a real team effort with special mention to our three intrepid veteran replacements who braved the cold before they came on; so well done to Tim Hassall,Martin Varley and Chris Hall. Great to see Tim in 2nds action being the first of my suggested players from Boxing Day to take up the offer of playing on a more regular basis.

Perhaps Tim can persuade Jimmy Mackie to come out of retirement!

Congratulations to December Player Of The Month, Max Prescott who is rapidly improving with every game and is surely due a 1st team outing in the near future. A word for referee, Dominic Kirkbride, who did his best to keep the game flowing. Thanks also to Doddy who was matchday sponsor; much appreciated as always!! Also thanks to Alan Morris(Snr) and young Matthew Burton for running the raffle and also to Liam Westwater for running the touch. Next week sees the 2nds away to New Brighton 3rds in a local derby.

Richie's Christmas Rugby Roundup ~ Friday 26th December

THE SPIRIT OF RUGBY IS ALIVE AND WELL THIS FESTIVE SEASON AT HOLM LANE!!

35TH ANNUAL CONSECUTIVE BROTHERS V VETERANS MATCH FOR THE BECKETT/HILLAN SHIELD.

Click for more picturesOn a bitterly cold afternoon at Holm Lane this annual contest was played out in what was a very keenly contested affair with the result in doubt until the very last minute. It was great to see such a good turnout of players including guests and people coming out of 'retirement' to play. We hope that perhaps some of you might consider playing on a more regular basis to inspire our youngsters from the Under16/17 team who will start to make the transition from age group to adult rugby next season.

Oldest players of the day turning back the tides of time were Tony Owens (60 years 7 months) and Alan Morris Snr (60years 3months); well played gentlemen and don't give up yet as Donny Hawker was the oldest player to turn out in this fixture at the age of 69 years 5 months!! Well done to our guest players Gary Pitt, Tim Hassall, Howie Leighton, Steve Stockford, Steve Copple, Barry Miller and Steve O'Hara; well done to Steve who played 10 minutes at the end to raise money for charity - a brilliant feat to play what I suspect was your first game of rugby on such a cold afternoon!! Some of the others, I know, are unattached to rugby clubs and hopefully will consider what I said to them about playing on a regular basis?!

Good to see Tony Burton, Tony Blease, Mark McCormack, Adam Westwater and Derek Prescott come out of 'retirement' to play; also hoping you will all consider playing from time to time!! Stewie McEwen, I don't consider you a retired player yet?! Many of the regular 1st Team players had outstanding games which is what I expect really, so no personal mentions this time around! There was a lack of 2nd team players for some unknown reason?

However, one of the 2nd teamers, 18 years old, Max Prescott, was the recipient of The Donny Hawker Memorial Award for Man Of The Match. Very well played, Max, must be knocking on the 1st Team door very shortly!! A close contender for the award was Richie Peters who had a fine game too! As I mentioned earlier the result was in doubt until the very last minute when Liam Evans touched down for The Brothers.

An excellent game brilliantly controlled by local Liverpool Society referee, Dave Hickey, who thoroughly enjoyed his afternoon including 'Christmas Carding' several players; their penalty was having to buy Dave a pint after the game!1 Well done, Dave, and many thanks to you and all the players for putting on such an enthralling match.

It is always an emotional time of year and the same applies at Parkonians too as we think of those who have passed on and their families! I feel I should mention our founder H. Martin Curphey and Ronnie Caton who dedicated their lives to our great Club. Donny Hawker and Brian 'Gus' Cusick were legends of this great fixture so it was an honour as always to welcome their families. Sara Hawker and her son, Connor, had travelled from Northwich in honour of her father to present The Donny Hawker Memorial Award for Man Of The Match to Max. Hope you got back home before the snow set in?!

The Cusick/Bowe/Clarke family had most generously sponsored the bottles for the raffle prizes; many thanks guys much appreciated as always! Also thanks to Sue Baddeley who also kindly donated raffle prizes. I would just like to mention my late father, Harold, a great rugby man in so many ways who loved this day and put forward the original Beckett shield for this game.

There was a fabulous turn out of non playing members, their families and friends also; as President I feel so proud that so many people see the Club as one of their focal points over the Christmas period. I am also sure that there are people reading this who live both locally and 'further afield' and wish that they could be with us on special days such as this; our thoughts are with you too!!

It felt strange not having the members' lounge available this year but we hope that the refurbishment will be completed early in the New Year. This has taken place due to an RFU Social Spaces Initiative grant of £10,000 which has most generously been matched by £5,000 from the Peter Johnson Foundation and £5,000 from the generosity of one of our own senior members, to whom we are indebted.

Many thanks to youngsters Liam Westwater and Matthew Burton for running the touch and to Matthew for doing really well in selling so many raffle tickets. Two Hillan winners and two Pearson winners; without cheating?! Many thanks to Chris and Lesley Hall and Cath Sharkey for running the bar so efficiently and of course throughout the year!! Hope everyone got home safely in the snow?!

GREAT REUNION DAY AND A PLUCKY 1ST TEAM PERFORMANCE TOO!!

Click for more picturesThere was a fantastic turnout of former players for our Annual Club Reunion day.

It was great to welcome everyone as well as Martin Wroe, Cheshire RFU president, and our own Under 16's squad who surely represent the future of our Club on the field of play. It was obvious that everyone enjoyed themselves. Many thanks to Pete Evans for his excellent catering and to Steve Williams for sponsoring our lunch time raffle. This is very much appreciated, as it was a special bottle too, with prize winner, Mike Hawker taking it home with him as opposed to sharing it out!!

Click for more picturesThe 1st Team put up an improved playing performance compared to the previous week at Capenhurst and indeed we went into an early lead in the 8th minute with a try from Eric Nixon converted by Ben Sadler. Gradually as the first half progressed so Ellesmere Port began to dominate, scoring four tries, two of which were converted, leaving the interval score 24-7 in their favour.

Port scored two more tries in the third quarter before we rallied strongly scoring three good tries in the last 15 minutes through Liam Evans, Harry Eastwood and Ben Sadler. However, if truth be told it was too little too late; although our squad should be congratulated for their "never say die" spirit, displaying a much more disciplined team effort. Many thanks to referee, Martin Calcutt, who thoroughly enjoyed his afternoon as usual!

DISAPPOINTING DAY AT THE CAPE!!

This was, indeed, a most disappointing display by the 1st Team after their valiant efforts in the last league game in the Isle Of Man three weeks ago. The 3 week gap between league games certainly showed added to the fact that Capenhurst were really up for this one after their great victory over Oldershaw the previous week.

The whole afternoon was marred by a serious injury, after 25 minutes, to the young Cape winger. All at Parkonians wish him well for a successful recovery! The game had to be halted awaiting the ambulance and when play did restart it was fairly obvious that it would be very difficult to fit the whole game in! The match finally ended after @70 minutes play in near darkness!!

The truth is Cape played better as a team with us showing a lack of self discipline which needs addressing swiftly! We scored two very good tries through Captain, Andy Smith, and Terry Williams and we had our moments!! Terry Williams, for me, was far and away our Man Of The Match, putting in an awesome display; although he, along with others, must learn to control their frustrations!!

A big thank you to Terry Grundy(Cape President) and all at Capenhurst for their generous after match hospitality as always!!

Next week sees the 1st Team entertain Ellesmere Port and we will be looking for a much improved performance.

PROUD PERFORMANCES BY BOTH OUR TEAMS!!

Yes indeed two mightily proud performances by both our teams this weekend.

The 1st Team travelled to league leaders, Ramsey(IOM), with the bare minimum of 15 players due to several injuries and unavailability but put in a valiant effort against all the odds. Ramsey opened the scoring but the Parks were soon back in the game and indeed led by 10-5 with tries from Eric Nixon and Danny Blyth.

Our hosts scored a converted try before the interval giving them a slender half time lead of 12-10. Ramsey did open up in the second period scoring a further seven tries five of which were converted before Terry Williams scored two consolation tries for us thus securing a losing bonus point by the way of scoring four tries!

A superb effort so well done to all the players, coach Gareth, and veteran touring supporters. Sure you all had a great weekend?! Many thanks to Kenny Owen and Gareth Pryce for their help in organising the trek to 'The Island'.

The 2nd Team entertained Ruskin Park 2nds at Holm Lane in a league match which finally commenced 25 minutes after the scheduled kick off time due to the late arrival of half their team. Like the 1sts, the 2nds had the bare minimum of 15 players with several people playing out of positon, some carrying injuries too and thus playing through the pain barrier.

This was a very close encounter indeed! However, for various reasons, I thought we thoroughly deserving of our narrow victory. There was a real team spirit evident in Doddy's men with a real commitment shown to each other.

There were strong performances from Gareth Taylor, Phil Barron, John Dunning, Mark Tucker, Martin Varley and Max Prescott but again I stress this was a real team effort. A big well done to young referee, Simon Waite, who performed admirably in the most difficult of circumstances!

Enough said; if you were present you will know what I mean!!! Also good to meet up once again with his 'mentor' Ian Robinson.

Many thanks to Dom Verheijen this week's Match Day Sponsor; much appreciated, Dom, as always. Thanks also to young touch judges Liam Westwater and Matthew Burton who both did a spendid job!

Apologies if I have made any errors in these line ups as I obviously wasn't present at both venues!! Next Saturday sees a break from league action for the 1st team.

The 1sts are due at Wallasey in a 'merit table' game whilst the 2nds are at Mossley Hill 2nds in a league encounter hoping to maintain their form!! Sadly then no game due to be played at Holm Lane. Once again many congratulations to all 30 players this last Saturday!

From Terry Marnick (Our Man at the Sharp End, well near it!)

WE SAILED TO THE ISLE OF MAN…………….

Well, after a very early start we flew into the Isle of Man full of hope more than expectation.

We had a weakened team with a number of those playing carrying injuries and illness, and several playing out of position to accommodate others with a lack of experience.

From the kick off the Ramsey winger carrying the ball was so far in touch that he had to sidestep cars in the car park. Although spotted by our weary veterans on the sideline it was missed by the referee and Gareth Pryce running touch, as he was still naming the team to the Manx radio presenter. Our protestations were dismissed by the referee and the try allowed under the posts. A weak conversion attempt was charged down by the excellent Terry Williams and Danny Blythe.

At this point, having seen the strength of Ramsey at home, those on the try line expected the worst and settled to watch a procession of tries against us. In fact this could not be further from the truth.

After such a demoralising start our players began to play as if they had been playing together as a team all season.

A flowing backs move saw Eric Nixon crash over in the corner and then a box kick from the rear of a ruck by Mark Hillan, over the advancing Ramsey defence, saw Danny Blythe scoop up the ball from just inside the Ramsey 22 and sprint to the line. Could this really be happening? Parks scratch team, missing a number of our first team players and big runners, actually be leading Ramsey 10 points to 5 with only 5 minutes to go of the first half. Our weary travelling support began to shake off their hangovers and were far more vocal than the large Ramsey crowd on the opposite touchline. Ramsey’s proud home record looked as though it could be in danger.  Our tackling was immense our forwards were pushing them back in the scrum and our backs were running good lines with ball in hand.

As the first half drew to a close a missed pass in the backs was hacked on and the strong running Ramsey backs followed up to score under the posts, this time the kick went over and at half time Ramsey had an undeserved lead of 12 - 10.

Our biggest problem was keeping 15 fit players on the pitch. Our lack of travelling subs meant that several players who had suffered knocks in the first half were forced to stay on the pitch.

Those knocks took their toll as from the kick off our concentration went, we had our forwards against their backs and for the first 20 minutes of the  second half Ramsey backs had a field day, scoring 5 unanswered tries.

Suddenly our players got a second wind. Ben Sadler kicked a penalty to touch and, from the resulting lineout Terry Williams took the first phase ball from Craig Foreshaw, jumping at 2, and crashed over with half of the Ramsey Pack on his back.

Parks were back in the game, although trailing the despite the bodies being weak the spirit didn’t leave the players and once again we pushed for a score that would at least give us a bonus point.

Another penalty, another lineout in the 22, could it happen again?  Would Ramsey fall for the same play. Terry was tiring, his knees are not what they were and he is playing his first season in the forwards.  Sorry Terry, we just haven’t got anyone on the sideline to replace you, one more big effort. The same play, Ramsey had even more players trying to bring down a rampaging Terry but to no avail, he once more crashed over in the corner.  Parks had a bonus point.

Despite the continued efforts of all of our players Ramsey were able to close the game out with a further two tries to leave the final score 57 - 20 in their favour.

Our team played some exceptional rugby in parts and to come away from Ramsey with a bonus point was a magnificent effort. Mention was made of the fact that we were missing a number of players and that had we had a full strength team the scoreline would have been closer. This is undoubtedly true but we did not have those players available for a number of reasons and, had it not been for Richie Peters being able to take unpaid time off work then we would have only gone with 14 players.

It is not my position to mention the reason why the RFU allow 5 subs on a match day but only pay for 3 to travel, nor for the fact that we could not get other players to travel.  But what I watched on Saturday at Ramsey were 15 players who gave their all for our club and I, for one, am immensely proud of their commitment and endeavour.

Following the game Ramsey were their usual excellent hosts and, despite their best efforts, came in a very poor second in the bar games afterwards.

From what I have been told we all enjoyed ourselves in Douglas on Saturday night before travelling home on Sunday.

Thanks to all of the players, Martyn Sharkey, Danny Blythe, Mark Barham, Richie Peters, Jamie Forshaw, Geoff Waters, Craig Foresaw, Terry Williams, Mark Hillan, Ben Sadler, Andy Smith, Eric Nixon, Harry Eastwood, Craig Whelan and Carl Whelan.   Coach Gareth Pryce, water boy Rob Marnick

FANTASTIC CHESHIRE PLATE SEMI FINAL RESULT

Click for more picturesIn a truly amazing game we qualified for the Cheshire Plate Final for the second successive season!!

This was a very exciting contest with some very good running and attacking rugby played by both sides but I am not so sure about the defensive qualities of either team?! We were 19-0 up in as many minutes then there was a quiet 10 minute spell before Congleton scored four tries in the last 12 minutes of the first half giving them a 24-19 lead at half time.

Truly incredible and I am convinced if that there had not been a half time interval then we would not have gone on to win the game.

The second period started slowly and there was no further score until a Congleton penalty in the 60th minute giving them a 27-19 lead with the signs looking ominous for the Oxton Parks team until another incredible 20 minutes of rugby that saw us go on to score 22 points in just 18 minutes. So Cheshire Plate Final here we come on Easter Saturday 4th April 2015 which sees either Oldershaw or Holmes Chapel as our opponents.

Where to start with performances; certainly not defensive ones!! There were six lovely tries scored including a brace from skipper Andy Smith who had a great match and was my MOTM. Danny Blyth as ever played very well scoring the well deserved final try! John Turaga, on a rare 1st team appearance, demonstrated his attacking qualities on the wing and scored a lovely touchdown. Geoff Waters, a very good try, a good game and some solid tackling too! Evergreen Mark Hillan was outstanding and, in my opinion, ran Andy Smith close for my MOTM award. A good try for young Ben Sadler as well as some impressive goal kicking and not just this week; well played, Ben!

All five replacements played their part too(Messrs Nixon, Pearson, Bennett, Stott and Danher) demonstrating the advantage of a full bench. We go into next week's away trek to table topping Ramsey(IOM) in good heart BUT we can't afford another bad 15 minute spell or we will not get away with it again. Well done to all players who played through the pain barrier and good luck to you for a speedy recovery and hopefully some of you will be able to play in the IOM?!

Finally congratulations to all players on both sides, and to referee, Martin Calcutt as well for putting on such a fascinating spectacle; one never knew what was going to happen next!! Many thanks to Luke Hillan for running the touch so impressively.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 1st November

DISAPPOINTING!!

After recent excellent performances the 1st XV suffered a disappointing loss to local rivals, Wallasey, after leading 10-0 at the half time interval. This week we just suffered too many changes both in absences and positional switches. We never threw in the towel and there were some very good individual performances as well as some brave ones as certain players had to continue when on other occasions they might have been replaced.

Harry Eastwood continues to play very well, especially in attack, and scored an excellent try after good work from Mark Hillan. Terry Williams had a very good game at tight head prop and will continue to improve in his new found position. Jamie Forshaw, on his full 1st Team debut, played both bravely and sensibly with the skipper, Andy Smith, again shining.

However, MOTM for me was the brave and outstanding, Rob Marnick, who played through the pain barrier once again! Very well played, Rob. Danny Blyth again shone and was desperately unlucky to have a touch down disallowed. Thought that in the main ref, Greg Carleton, had a good feel and control of the game although I have to say I thought he missed Danny Blyth's touchdown?! Good to see Oldershaw beating Ramsey at Belvidere too!!

After the game I was pleased to announce Harry Eastwood as September Player Of The Month with Danny Blyth taking the October award. Richly deserved so well done to both of you. Happy 24th birthday to Eric Nixon and yes you played well too, Eric!!

The 2nd Team travelled to Wallasey 2nds and went down 36-10 in a very brave effort. Ken Owen was the Match Day Sponsor; much appreciated and many thanks, Ken. Also thanks to Alan Morris Snr (as always) and Jess Pryce (this week) for organising the raffle.

This Saturday sees the 1sts entertain Congleton in the Cheshire Plate semi final with the 2nds travelling to Ruskin Park 2nds for their 1st round Plate game. Good luck to both sides and remember the earlier KO times of 2.15pm until further notice.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 25th October

GREAT WIN!!

Our recent good 1st Team displays continued with a well earned win over local rivals, Oldershaw, although we did let them back into the contest when, I felt, we had the capability on the day to win by a much larger margin.

We were 5-0 up within 2 minutes with an unconverted try from the impressive, Danny Blyth(Man Of The Match in my opinion). Indeed we were 20-0 up on the half hour mark which gives an indication of how our opponents came back into the game. Once again we had injuries and changes but this mattered little as the forwards in particular were impressive with Danny Blyth, Alan Williams, Terry 'two try' Williams and Barry Owens especially  to the fore throughout; Liam Evans as replacement shone once again and continues to develop his game.

There was, however, a tendency to kick away good possession when the ball should have been kept in hand. Nevertheless another most satisfying performance including another very good game from skipper, Andy Smith. Both teams should stay in the upper reaches of this division but is promotion desirable for either club when last year's promoted sides Prenton, lost to Orrell 62-0, and Trentham, lost to Liverpool Collegiate 114-0, on the same day and think of the struggle Wallasey had last season in South Lancs/ Cheshire 2!!

It is really such a big step so how about a 'real' South Lancs/Division 3, with no promotion and relegation, from next season which would include ourselves,Oldershaw,Wallasey,Prenton, Port Sunlight,Ellesmere Port,Capenhurst,Helsby and those 'North Lancs' teams on Merseyside including Mossley Hill, Crosby St Marys and St Edwards OB; this is obviously not a definitive list and not meant to cause any offence to any club not mentioned! I think that if something is not done very soon then we are going to see clubs go under.

Also, why cannot the IOM clubs CB affiliations not be spread between Lancashire, Cheshire and Cumbria rather than just Cheshire at present thus avoiding the possible prospect of three IOM teams in the same division again? If this were to happen then maybe Southern Nomads(IOM) could then enter the league structure too?!

Let me know what you think especially officials from some of the clubs I have mentioned!!

Dave Hickey had a good game as ref enjoying himself both on and off the the field. Thanks, Dave, and also good to talk to Phil Francis from Oldershaw about old times and some of the afore mentioned issues. Where was my old mate, Robbie Potter? Good to see an ex Pensby pupil of mine, Richard Lloyd-Jones, having a good game for our opponents in the centre. Someone needs to tell him that Pensby lads play for Parkonians?!

Result:Oxton Parkonians 32 Oldershaw 21.

Unfortunately the 2nd Team were left without a game with Crosby St Marys 2nds conceding at 11am on the Saturday morning.

This week sees the start of the 2.15pm KO's with the 1sts at home again in another local derby against near neighbours, Wallasey with the 2nds travelling to Wallasey also. Match day sponsor last Saturday was myself.

PAST PLAYERS REUNION DAY IS SATURDAY 13TH DECEMBER 12 NOON ONWARDS WITH THE 1STS ENTERTAINING ELLESMERE PORT AT 2.15PM. PUT THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY NOW.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 18th October

A REAL HUMDINGER OF A GAME AWAY AT WYNCOTE!!

The 1sts made the short journey across the water to play the Liverpool University Medicals side at the beautifully kept Wyncote Sports Ground. It was real entertainment and in truth a draw would have been a fair result. Both sides had their chances to win the game but mistakes as well as excellent skills in addition to very stout and heroic defending was displayed by both teams.

We had many changes with some players having to play out of position. There was a welcome return from injury for Terry Williams who played out of position at blindside flanker and a few minutes at prop too. Well done, Terry! Jamie Forshaw, after some strong games in the 2nds, had a very promising 1st team debut in the 2nd row. Stu Harrison at No.8 gave his all and in doing so sustained a suspected cracked rib. Well played, Stu, and good luck with your recovery too.

There were strong games from Peter and Mark Hillan and Eric Nixon with Geoff Waters tackling ferociously as always. All in all then an excellent team performance which we were unlucky to not at least draw!! We must carry this level of on the field commitment into future weeks. Well done to all squad members on the day!! Also another try for Martyn Sharkey; he knows where the line is now and how to ground the ball too!!

Result:Liverpool University Medicals 20 Oxton Parkonians 17.

The 2nd Team struggled for numbers but performed heroically against top of the table local rivals Prenton 2nds going down 5-61. Thanks to all players for turning out and to the Prenton lads who played for us. This is surely the spirit of rugby and what it is all about NOT relocating your club 100 miles away or people trying to make a mint out of the RWC already when it is still nearly a year away.

The RFU would do well remember to think about clubs such as ours and Prenton and all others at grassroots level and make it a darn sight easier for us to administer the game. Rant over; for now at least?!.

This week sees the 1sts entertain Oldershaw in what should be a tasty league encounter whilst the 2nds travel to old friends in Crosby St Marys 2nds. This is the last week of 3pm KO's.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 11th October

EXCELLENT, ENTERTAINING WIN AGAINST RESOLUTE OPPONENTS LINLEY!!

Click for more picturesWe continued our improving start to the season with an excellent win against a very spirited Linley side who worked hard right up to the final whistle. Indeed they were the better side in the first quarter but did not turn all their possession and territory into points. As the half progressed the 'tide began to turn' and as we spread the ball wider so the extra pace and power began to tell.

Our first try was a real beauty with Ryan Evans making a lovely break putting Andy Smith in under the posts with a well timed pass. We scored a second through Danny Blyth shortly after although we were a touch fortunate as the ref was unsighted when we knocked on in the build up. This was excellently converted wide out by Ben Sadler who had a strong game. Shortly before half time Linley bounced back with an unconverted try before Ben Sadler converted an excellent penalty leaving the interval score at 17-7 in our favour.

Click for more pictures

The second period was a most entertaining affair with us well to the fore but Linley kept battling back and they were never totally out of contention. Very good tries came from Ben Sadler, Harry Eastwood, Geoff Waters and Andy Smith again with Ben Sadler adding a further two conversions. Although there had been some defensive frailties this, in essence, was an excellent team performance with our back line excelling in attacking situations.

This is all most encouraging for the club, and surely for coaches Danny Hughes and Gareth Pryce, in addition to much improved training numbers in recent weeks. Sorry that I can't mention all players but I thought in the backs that Andy Smith, Harry Eastwood, Eric Nixon and Ben Sadler all excelled. In the forwards, Liam Evans, Ryan Evans and Josh Bowe all had very good games; but for me the Man Of The Match was Danny Blyth who was absolutely everywhere. Well played, Danny, and not too many penalties either.

I would like to praise, in addition, the four players who came off the bench and all played their part; Ben Pearson, Ryan Evans(although he actually played most of the game coming on early for the injured Rob Marnick),Barry Owens and Chris Stott. It is never easy being a replacement not knowing when or if you are 'going to get on'; however, they form a vital part of the modern game. Many thanks too to referee, Mark Walsh, who had a good game and was always up with play. Mark commented to me how much he had enjoyed his first visit to our club and on how hospitable we had been. Well done as well to our opponents, Linley, for the part they played in an enthralling contest.

Result:Oxton Parkonians 39 Linley 19.

The 2nds made the short journey to play Port Sunlight 2nds and lost, according to Doddy, in a most enjoyable game by a 33-20 scoreline. Also pleasing to report that we took a full squad there; most encouraging!

Next week the 1sts travel to Liverpool University, for their next league game, in what should be a fast and open match. The 2nds, meanwhile, are also in league action entertaining our local rivals Prenton 2nds at Holm Lane.

Many thanks to this week's match day sponsors Derek Prescott and Tony Burton (birthday boys); much appreciated as always. It was a marvellous turnout of members and supporters last Saturday with a great after match atmosphere in the Clubhouse. Long may it continue!! Both teams will shortly be sporting new team strips thanks to the most generous sponsorship from Peter Johnson which we very greatly appreciate. Also many thanks to association chairman, Dave Westwater, for co-ordinating this sponsorship.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 26th September

ANOTHER ENCOURAGING PERFORMANCE!!

The 1sts travelled to Knutsford and in the end were comfortable winners, but not until a very close first 60 minutes had been contested on a very narrow and constraining school pitch!.

We really came to the fore in the last quarter albeit that we were playing up the hill and against the breeze! Rob Marnick was our Man Of The Match being truly exceptional in the first 20 minutes. Both his fellow back rowers, Danny Blyth and Stu Harrison were outstanding  too.

Once again this was a real team performance with everyone playing for each other, with great spirit and a minimum of talking as well. Veteran half backs, Ian Westwater and Mark Hillan had good games with Geoff Waters powering through for two excellent tries late on. The line out worked very well with Matt Dodd, Liam Evans and Danny Blyth combining most skilfully. Doddy came into the squad and had a very solid game, at hooker, despite being in much pain for the best part of the second half.

We know that we will be in for much sterner tests as the season progresses but for now very well done to all members of the squad and this must give great encouragement to captain, Andy Smith, and the coaches.

Also many thanks to Knutsford for their generous after match hospitality at Toft CC; much appreciated chaps.

This week our thoughts should be with club head coach, Danny Hughes, in his 'combat' with his current health issues; all the best to you Danny and I know you would have found many aspects of this display pleasing to the eye. Special mention to Mark Barham who is one of our most consistent players week in week out; always available and always at training. a real example to younger members of the squad. Well done, Mark, and long may it continue.

The 2nds, at Holm Lane, had a very exciting and close game, going down narrowly 14-10 to New Brighton 3rds. Young Ben Moore was the Liverpool Society referee thoroughly enjoying his afternnoon and evening with us! Many thanks, Ben.

This Saturday sees a break from league action for both sides. There is a 2nd team friendly, however, at home to Anselmians 3rds.

Richie's Rugby Roundup ~ Saturday 19th September

BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

After a disappointing start to the season the 1sts played with much more spirit and vigour and comfortably defeated a plucky, as always, Helsby team. It was a true team performance ranging from the veterans Ian Westwater, Mark Barham, Peter and Mark Hillan down to the raw teenage talent of Harry Eastwood. It was a special occasion too for the Whelans, almost identical twins, Craig and Karl who played in the 1st team together.

Rob Marnick starred throughout but my Man Of The Match has to go to young Harry Eastwood; a raw talent who is destined to be a fabulous future player! However, 'champagne moment of the day' surely has to go to Martyn 'with a y' Sharkey for his try even though he wasn't sure what to do with the ball once he crossed the line?!?

Captain, Andy Smith also had a fine game but all members of the squad should be congratulated on a fine, skilful and entertaining performance. If availability remains good and the squad is prepared to train regularly then we are sure to improve and gain positive results.

Well done too to young referee, Philip Nam, who had a fine game and was always up with play. Also great to see his mentor, Colin Christy, once again; always a pleasure to welcome you to our club, Colin!

Result: Oxton Parkonians 31 Helsby 7.

Scorers:Tries - Harry Eastwood(2), Andy Smith(2), Martyn Sharkey. Cons-Ben Sadler(3).

Ref:Philip Nam(Liverpool).

The 2nds although they lost played a most enjoyable game away to Ormskirk Lions going down 45-19; so well done to Doddy and his young squad!

Congratulations to Alan Morris(Snr) on his 60th birthday on Saturday 13th September celebrated with a magnificent party that evening, many thanks Al, and well done on playing that afternoon and on scoring a try. Also thanks to Al for match day sponsorship on his birthday and to Paul Corvers for his sponsorship the previous week. Much appreciated as always.

We are on the look out for match day sponsors for this season; please contact Alan to book a Saturday!

U16,14 and 13 teams all played Wirral this Sunday and whilst going down in all three games played most competitively and thoroughly enjoyed themselves; so very well done to all players, coaches, helpers and parents.

This Saturday 27th September sees the 1sts at Knutsford whilst the 2nds entertain New Brighton 3rds at Holm Lane.

Our thoughts should be with Eric Potter, Vice President, at this time as he is currently not well at all.
